the first game was a lot tighter wound than the lost age. the lost age feels fucking disjointed compared to the first in so many ways. he has every right to say the second game's writing was ass. also the fact that you never even figure out who the fuck saturos and minardi even are and what their entire motivation was and they're never talked about again still bugs me.

>Why Prox only sent assholes on this mission is not explained
Prox leaders, initially first tried asking the people of vale normally but they weren't listened to, Saturos and Menardi being the retards they were, trigger the first eruption hastily without any of the others knowing, so the plan to keep negotiating almost went out the window until they found felix and company. They sent them back with Felix thinking he'd be able to convince them had he returned, but then Saturos and Menardi decided to be retarded.

I think this game genuinely has no "evil" characters other than maybe Alex but we don' t really see what his endgame is, does he want to control the world? Why does he need all that power for? We'll never know. The plot is basically different factions trying to solve a problem from different points of view, even the Wise One isn't evil, he just did what he seemed was best to keep the world at peace.

I can't agree on the take of Saturos and Menardi being called retarded all the time, their land was already half eaten by the consumption of the edge of the world, of course they wouldn't be on the mood to have tea and bloody crumpets about opening Sol Sanctum, Isaac also wasn't in the wrong murdering them because it was his hometown that the Proxians affected on trying to fix thing they had no idea how to, and it was still Saturos and Menardi being right even after death, the Lighthouses needed to be lit, I don't see why anyone would call them retarded at any point, they were desperate and cornered into it all, also Himi sexo.

Alex mentions it in the first meeting of Agatio and Karst, that the reason they fucked up and cause the bolder to drop in the first place was because they were to stupid to solve the puzzles and get past the traps, same went for the lighthouses as well. They main fault was being arrogant as fuck, but they did have genuine retardation moments.
>>
>>738218765
They literally had the perfect hostage situation to make the trade that they wanted, yet never did. Also if the old fuck was eventually convinced to light the lighthouses, why was Issac considered a lost cause?

It irks me that he spends so much of the runtime on the goddamn plot, which is pretty damn meh. No-one plays Golden Sun for the story, they play it for the absolute 10/10 dungeon designs and world map exploration.
I get there's a lot of nonsense dialogue that wastes your time because it's a JRPG, but no-one gives a fuck and it's not the reason it's remembered fondly. People remember the gameplay and music.

Alex is a conman and a snake, he is willing to lie to save face, we dont even know if he was around in the first raid 3 years prior, he could have been the one whispering wrong solutions for the fuck of it, like when he allowed Piers to get jailed for shit he did.

Yes but no. Overall yeah it makes the game harder but the base game is so piss easy that isn't saying much. Really the biggest change is that it forces you to experiment with classes and not just rely on summon rushing which trivializes much of the original game.
Personally, I believe if you're not a drooling retard you could easily play through the game like this on your first try, but you could just relegate this to NG+ if you're really cautious.

See this retarded argument is still being made, makes me nostalgic. Saturos and Menardi were absolute turbo niggers and they brought the unnecessary aggro on themselves and Felix. It's easy to explain Felix away as being brainwashed/groomed into going along with them, and of course he would know that the world would end if they didn't activate the lighthouses, so he's just going along with the other two dickheads because they're pretty much all he's got. Saturos and Menardi are kind of retarded plotwise, though, it's like they just can't help being cryptic assholes who didn't even bother trying to tell the first party what the real deal was, it seemed like they were just picking fights because they wanted to.

I'm not replying to everyone.

Saturos and Menardi were never retards, nor were they ever hostile with Vale. They were sent by Prox to Vale to negotiate for access to the Sanctum because Prox was literally falling into the void. The Elders in Vale were being hyper-traditionalist, close-minded, and even grew arrogant because they refused to believe what Saturos and Menardi were explaining. In desperation, the two of them broke into the Sanctum and triggered the traps by mistake. The entire disaster in Vale was unintentional. If they were hostile, then they would have killed Isaac and Garet, and they wouldn't have rescued Felix and the three parents.

Saturos and Menardi, realizing that Vale wouldn't comply without pressure, and presuming Felix would operate the same way, kept the parents hostage so Felix would work with them to give them access to Venus Lighthouse. They worked with Alex to get access to Mercury, and abducted Sheba to navigate Jupiter. The two were the champions of Prox. They were the strongest, the most-intelligent, and were willing to do anything and everything to save their people. They were what Isaac and Garet would be for Vale. They were HEROES. Even Saturos' theme is heroic, because he's fighting for a good cause.

The entire point of the second game, specifically Lemuria, is to show that Saturos and Menardi were right. Their deaths are tragedy. Agatio and Karst are rightfully hostile because they lost two incredibly important people, but they AREN'T the heroes that Saturos and Menardi were. TLA explains this in its entirety when communicating with the villagers in Prox.

Failure to understand this is a sign of personal retardation.

>If they were hostile, then they would have killed Isaac and Garet, and they wouldn't have rescued Felix and the three parents.
That means little when they spend the rest of the game choosing not to explain anything to Isaac and Co. during their multiple interactions. Isaac's party wasn't belligerent, they gave chase in large part because Saturos and Menardi decided to kidnap Jenna and Kraden, not to mention taunting them and Isaac's party threatening the hostages' safety. It's understandable for them to be frustrated with Vale leadership, but if they could convince Felix to see things their way, they definitely could have convinced Isaac and party, especially if they got Felix to help them explain. They were just overly-prideful asshole warriors who brought death on themselves and made the mission infinitely harder by being belligerent cunts. Karst and Agatio were the same way, kill shit first, ask questions never.

I have real life to deal with but the only reason they convinced Felix is because he was taken to Prox and saw the edge of the world himself. You’re also forgetting that they don’t explain anything to Isaac and Garet because neither of them ask WHY the duo are lighting the lighthouses and repeatedly open with “we’re going to stop you” which is synonymous with “we’re will let your entire people die”. They threaten Jenna’s and Kraden’s safety to try and get the two to back down, and that’s all.

I mean Isaac and Garet really have no reason to hear them out, they attacked them as kids for basically no reason and kidnapped their friend and mentor. as far as they know they are malicious actors who triggered the event that killed Isaac's Dad and Jenna's whole family, and personally beat them close to death.

The ending was rushed and nonsensical as fuck. Wise One is a guardian left by ancients to watch over the lighthouses and alchemy. He cannot directly do anything to the lighthouses himself, but traps and challenges can be put in place to ensure that only the most worthy can actually get there.
Its pretty obvious that the Mars Star thing was also a trick to prevent someone from trying to absorb the full might of the Golden Sun as it formed, considering that there was a non zero chance that someone would happen to be in the exact same spot as the last lighthouse was lit. That's pretty much why Isaac's entire party + Kraden might as well be demigods as of DD. So much so that they make it a literal plot point to prevent anyone from Kalay (Ivan, etc) from getting access to where the kids were during the entire game.

Karst herself is sold by Prox as having been more like her sister before learning of her death, which caused her to be more of a caustic, hostile bitch even if applying that blame to Felix was unfair. Agiato though, we're told he's a meathead gloryhound, so he definitely wasn't a good person from the start. Saturos and Menardi were decent people who took the wrong approach out of desperation and shortsightedness, and Karst is a little sister driven to hostility in mourning while carrying on her legacy. Agiato is the only one who is genuinely an ass, and probably would've fucked shit up intentionally.

if any kind of video essay, retrospective, review, critique, whatever faggy name they give it is over like 30 minutes, I already know it's a boring script consisting of narrating what happens through the entire game like a wikipedia article that repeats itself 3 times, that could have easily been shortened to at least 1/8th the length with 0 loss of information with a single edit pass

So when is somebody going to combine GS1 and GS2 into one game like it was originally intended to be?
Lost Age already has the complete data for every single enemy, item, and song from the first game in it as unused content. All you'd need to add to the ROM is the story data and maps.
I'd love to play GS1 with GS2's engine improvements and transfer characters without the need for a link cable or password.

>>
>>738237528
a thing that would've happened if they just ran away without attacking literal children. all that did was make the party resent them and think they are malicious in nature, causing a game long conflict that did not need to exist. they had no time for others, except for giving their eventual killers even more motivation to kill them. brilliant stuff

they left you unconscious to cover their tracks long enough to not be hubted down by the Valeans, they arent eciñ, they were desperate for any longshot on Mt. Aleph fixing their situation.
>>
>>738237669
Isaac an Garret resented them because they flooded their town, caused a big bolder to fall on it, killed four people (they don't know they're alive,) the village elders told them to, AND the Wise One, the closest thing they have to a god, told them to. The fact they have an explanation for everything bad that happened in Vale their first and second visits is irrelevant form their position where they think these two are trying to destroy the world. Saturos and Menardi knocking the kids out has shit all to do with their hostility in the long run next to all of this.
>>
>>738237762
they do remember, Garet is about to tell Jenna what happened after the timeskip but gets interrupted and decides to just keep quiet, probably because he doesn't want to tell her they saw the people who supposedly caused her family's deaths.

>the village elders told them to, AND the Wise One, the closest thing they have to a god, told them to.
this happens after the timeskip, a big motivator for Garet and Isaac's training during the skipped time is the boulder and the attack on them. They wanted to get stronger because the people who caused the incident whooped their asses.

That was their motivation to train and still be hopelessly outclassed (during the second encoutner in Vale.) Their hostility is still mostly sourced from everything else I listed, recall that they barely interact with them during the second trip other than getting played for fools.
>>
>>738237872
>they aren't evil
sure but they do things that be construed as evil because they refuse to just explain themselves. taking hostages, triggering a trap and instead of ingratiating themselves to the people they need help from and who suffer from that trap running away and beating on children aren't exactly good guy things. Felix turns around because he's brought to the Prox village and talks to people there, no such negotiation happens with basically anyone else. Isaac and the gang are only convinced because Felix Jenna and Kraden are doing the same work the child beaters and hostage takers were doing before they died like dipshits.
>>
>>738237669
this is truly advanced autism
>>
>>738238005
Why do you think Isaac and Garret would listen to them over god if they did stop to explain themselves to them?
>>
>>738214270
I recently did a three-part essay on the Pillars of Eternity franchise (1, Deadfire, Avowed) and how it came to fail and just completely abandon on its stated promises: 1) Have memorable companions like the Baldur's Gate games, 2) Have interesting combat encounters like Icewind Dale, 3) Have thought-provoking dialogue like Planescape Torment. Avowed is the logical conclusion of constantly straying away from their initial vision until it was basically non-existent anymore.
>>
>>738238093
Isaac and the gang don't have to listen to THEM in particular, they can use the hostages they took as intermediaries. but because the Prox bozos need to be as inflammatory as possible to everyone they encounter for the overarching conflict of GS1 no such peaceful resolution can occur.
>>
>>738238270
It's Felix's choice to be a mute masked man out of shame the entire first game, anon.
>>
>>738237963
I dunno I think there's some room for thinking they aren't totally malicious, and only accidentally triggered the trap initially, but any pretense of that gets blown away when you get beat into the dirt by them for basically no reason. At that point it seems maliciously done, and they never work to correct that viewpoint basically ever. you only understand their actions AFTER they die, when a more reasonable party explains the situation.
>>
>>738238319
>I think there's some room for thinking they aren't totally malicious, and only accidentally triggered the trap initially
There's room for you to think that. That is, you think that in their situation, you might think that.
>For basically no reason
To serve as a distraction. Nothing personal, or else they'd have killed them.
>Correct that viewpoint
Isaac and Garret were never going to believe them over god. You know this, they'd have rejected them out of hand. All them explaining themselves would've done is make them retroactively look better from out outsider perspective. Felix might've been able to patch things up, but he let his own shame stop him from even trying. Alex could've used his connection to Mia to smooth things over too, but unlike everyone else he actively is a malicious dickhead, never would've helped fix things, and was glad when they died.
>>
>>738238005
anon, I think you truly have tism, Isaac and Garet sure have no reasons to trust Saturos and Menardi, but givr it a thought, why would you, as a Prox warrior, on a mission to save your homeland, why would you try to explain yourself to two goddamn kids.

from what exactly? >That line is about how YOU think that you would accept their story if they didn't beat you up, ignoring the personality and perspective of Isaac and Garret literally obeying a mission from god.
again the mission from god comes THREE YEARS after this. They could've thought during the entire timeskip they just set off a trap by accident, and fled the scene. instead the prox bozos think it'd be a good idea to attack children for no reason after getting overheard about them setting off the trap. it's just a dumb thing to do, and only served to set themselves up for failure later because they decided to behave like cartoon villains instead of people earnestly trying to save the world. what's the point of attacking witnesses if you aren't actually going to prevent them from doing the witnessing? you're just gonna piss those people off even more, and that's exactly what they did and that's exactly why they die.
>Did they know that?

>>738238920
>They could've thought during the entire timeskip they just set off a trap by accident
Why would they think this? To the kids, without getting into a fight, it's "Those evil assholes wrecked our town to steal from our shrine!" The Vale Elders knew the real story in either case and don't tell them in either scenario. You seem to think the kids developed animus from losing a fight, not their town being nearly destroyed and people they know supposedly dying.
>>
Does Isaac knock up Jenna in the sequel?
>>
>>738238987
you are doing the thing you are accusing me of, I think BOTH things informed their animosity, not just one or the other. you seem to refuse to engage with the idea that being attacked by them while trying to get help saving those who seemingly just died from the boulder would have zero affect on the kids personally, when we see FOR A FACT in the very next scenes that just is not true. why are you being so obtuse?
>>
>>738239127
Apparently, but she doesn't live with Issac because??????
>>
>>738239213
Oh. That's too bad. I wish Isaac had hooked up with Mia. She's cuter looking in the old game.
>>
>>738239132
It's not me being obtuse, it's me rejecting the idea that Isaac and Garret would be more positively inclined towards Saturos and Menardi, enough to listen to them explain the situation and defy god, just because they didn't get beaten up. My point is that there's enough animus there regardless, and motivation from their elders and god, not to listen. You mentioned before that this motivation was added three years later, but you forget that their only encounter with them before they get lied to is Saturos, Menardi, and Felix showing up at Sol Sanctum to nab the elemental stars and Kraden and Jenna from them. But you also formerly said they should've explained themselves AFTER this, when they were pursued, but by that the hostility and the mission from god was locked in. Did you expect them to explain themselves at Sol Sanctum? Did you really think that would work if things had been the same BUT they didn't get beaten up? You can speculate, but I don't think that would've changed anything. You might as well blame Felix instead, who instead of revealing his face and talking to his childhood friends, decided to act like a mute and insist they take his sister along with Kraden who was the one they actually wanted.

the fact that people still have articulate discussions about this games plot 25 years later proves its a good game.
>>
>>738238807
Iovara is part of the "twist" in Pillars and what technically connects you to your Awakening (memories of a past life) while also being a Watcher. The entire theological inquires of Pillars of Eternity was already teetering on trite in the first game but it gets absolutely flattened in Deadfire by subliminally pushing you to go against the Gods. There is no mystery about the gods anymore, it's all revealed, down to how they even look like, so the primary overarching narrative of the franchise is just not there anymore in my opinion anyways.
>>
>>738239348
People remember it because it's the most unique RPG in GBA with Djinn and dungeon being big puzzle, not story that can be solved by talking normally
>>
>>738239320
You don't think getting attacked by the people who caused the death of your family wouldn't piss you off further? AGAIN, the entire reason Isaac and Garet train during the timeskip is because they were attacked. The prox shitters literally created the warriors that killed them FOR NO REASON. Felix is also to blame but to act like the prox shitters didn't behave in a way that gave them extra animosity they did not need is insane! They behave out of pocket because they need to be cartoon villains to hate for the first game, and the plot suffers for it because people need to act like morons for the mystery to remain intact until TLA. Isaac's party is clearly open to reason because they turn come TLA, so the people holding all the plot cards need to be massive stupid assholes so the game's plot can work.
>>
>>738239342
Shilling is against board rules. We can just discuss it here. Pic is Pillars' crowning achievement by the way. If there one thing that the franchise actually did better than many of its contemporaries and even now is pic, ludonarrative dissonance aside.
>>
>>738239352
Deadfire probably would've been better plot wise if the reveal that Eothas was trying to shatter the wheel came earlier, that way you can juggle your animosity with the gods with the practical concerns of ending the cycle of reincarnation that the world runs on.

I'm at a very strong opinion that either it shouldn't have been the Watcher or if not (there is way too many POE1 cameos to accommodate the Watcher's return), have the Watcher actually be not strictly be a Herald of Berath and be a Herald of other Gods as well (maybe even Eothas himself). And yes, the reveal isn't even really a reveal about what Eothas is planning to do and pussyfooting around it with purple prose being narrated by a lesser VA than the first narrator makes it a slog despite the main quest technically being short. I'm not even gonna go to how fucking insane they went hard on pandering to Critical Role and its fans that it actually impacted how the game is presented.
>>
Tune in for the next video "Golden Sun: The Dark Dawn, the misunderstood game"
>>
Is that a brap game?
>>
>>738239756
being able to choose which god to be a herald of would've been neat, the campaign could differ slightly in that each god feeds you different quest resolutions, or they could have an alignment system where specific behaviors put you in favor with different gods. I played my only run of Deadfire as a cleric of Eothas and I thought that the main conflict being centered on his rampage across the islands was interesting, as I could embody his ideals while still opposing him.

but that's kind of the problem with the games in general, they clearly want to be godwankery but also can't exactly force you into the cleric role fantasy of dedicating yourself to one god or another. it works pretty good if you are inclined to be a cleric though.
>>
>>738239570
There was an post-launch where they added a book that you carry with you to cover unanswered questions that plagued the game. It allows you to speak to Woedica in a post hoc way to literally guide the player the motivation OF THE GODS. She even goes to reveal that reincarnation was already a thing before they came along, it just wasn't "perfected yet".
>>
>>738240012

I think it actually wants its cake and eat it too. The game is built around waxing theological but it narratively points you into disliking the theological narratives of the game in almost every avenue possible. Hence there are a fuckton of characters in Deadfire who just don't care about the gods or actively hate them and they are always portrayed as the right course.
>>
>>738240075
It doesn't even matter honestly. It was just interesting for a game to add in a tool for the player, post-launch, to literally answer their questions regarding the overarching motivations of the game. I have never seen a game do that ever.

I thought of the reputation system they had in Deadfire and wondered why they didn't have one that's about the gods that try to actively help you or hinder you depending on your rep. It's the companion quest for Maia, the Royal Deadfire Company companion you get. You send out missives to different RDC agents throughout the Deadfire which end up being assassination orders to destabilize the region. She's also, for some fucking reason, the sister of Kana Rua from the first game in which he makes a brief cameo.

It makes the fights more difficult, but gives you a lot more options to work with. You don't need to be some battle genius to beat it, but you also can't just brute force it with summon rushing like you could in the base game. Most of the classes get some kind of buff to make them able to compete with just matching elements between djinn and user.
>>
>>738239504
No one would have believed them in GS1 because all they would have had was their word of mouth compared to centuries of tradition telling them that accessing Sol Sanctum's depths and the lighthouses is a bad thing. Remember Mia also didnt want to light the places either. Not to mention that Saturos/Menardi also antagonized basically everyone along the way.

Its after they explore the world for the entirety of GS1 and 75% of GS2 that they become more receptive of the idea that the world was dying. Wise One also makes sure to do a lot of rules lawyering to abuse technicalities of his programming to ensure that only the "right" people could remotely get near to the lighthouses.

His Morrowind video is good, but this one is clearly completely unedited.
>"I am now going to tell you about the problem with XYZ."
>*Gets sidetracked yapping about something else*
>*Explains a point he already explained 45 minutes ago again.*
>*Explains that point in a slightly different way a second time in a row just to belabor himself as much as possible.*
>*Forgets to explain the problem with XYZ*
He obviously got fucking lazy and complacent. The Morrowind video obviously had a script, and he did research for it. The Skyrim is just him just riffing like a twitch streamer, it's obviously just unscripted rambling and he keeps repeating himself over and over, circular, hypnotic. I don't mind length to a video if it's actually valid content, but fucking WELL over 2/3rds of that videos runtime is him just repeating himself over and over on a redundant loop and wasting everyone's fucking time.
>"Actually, let me stop talking about Skyrim or half an hour and whine about my YouTube philosophy and how you're not allowed to criticize me for 45 minutes."
Hard to understate how alienated I am from this fag, even though he had already won me over after Morrowind. He had one good, successful video, and he decided he never needed to put effort into another one. It's obvious all he wants to do is Twitch stream for an audience of sycophants these days.

I think that's way harder than it sounds. You could do stuff like what the Pokemon ROM community does and make a special expanded version of the vanilla ROM to account for all the extra data, but the hardest part is gonna be porting scripts, flags, and all the under-the-hood shit. You'd have to rewrite a ton of scripts to point to new addresses and the like, make sure nothing added somehow conflicts with the previously existing data, etc.
As far as I know, there hasn't been a GS mod that bothers with massive event rewrites, and this would be an exponentially more difficult project.

Puzzles, Djinn system, combat, and Psynergy/summon visuals are the main draws of the game imo. The story starting off is nothing to write home about and there's not much character development; what's frustrating is that the lore and worldbuilding are top notch, but they don't truly come around until halfway through the second game.

>>
>>738260118
oh no I like them well enough, otherwise I wouldn't have beaten the first game and then moved on to the second. they just seem kinda... standard, I guess? nothing super special, not too great, not too bad. the classes based on equipped djinn is neat and then the risk/reward of having to unequip them in battle and losing the stats and class bonuses in order to do big summons is definitely unique, but for a casual first time player like myself the tradeoff seems really scary. though from glancing at this thread it seems like I've been gimping myself by not abusing the fuck out of summons and they're absolutely worth the stat penalty, but that's fine. I beat the first game's superboss without much in the way of summons by sheer brute force, but I hear that's not gonna cut it in the second game, and that super boss does not fuck around

>>

His HP hits the game's coded hard cap in hard mode. Hard multiplies enemy HP by 1.5. Dullahan has a base HP of 16,000. The game can only allow an HP maximum of 16,383, so he will only gain 383HP. Even though his attack and defense go up, the fight is easier because his HP is still the same and you're a much more intelligent player so you know how to abuse Shade/Flash/Granite for the fight.

No it's not. It's a series of stupid fetch quests and TLA is literally just more of the same. The only weirdness is Saturos and Menardi being swapped for Karst and Aguila because they needed a final boss for game 1. Karst acts and is treated like she's Menardi, down to her crush on Felix that would only make sense as a Menardi thing from their time travelling together.

The most unfortunate thing about the games is that the systems allow for so many cool unique tactics and setups but there aren't enough hard or even just large scale extended fights to take full advantage of it. >>
>>738266041
In what RPG do you ever NOT do quests given to you? There was also a similar problem in the first Pillars game during Defiance Bay where new players were accidentally locked in into choosing the Dozens because they meet them first and do their quest progression, without knowing that it'll lock out the other faction questlines no matter the reputation they have with the other factions.
>>
>>738265478
It's not nonexistent you silly billy, Elemental Power is what fuels the damage of psynergy, which already has a base power level. You gain EP by wearing certain items OR using Summons. The entire Summon system is meant to enhance spellcasters once their tiered spells fall off but they haven't leveled up yet to get a higher spell tier. At no point do spellcasters "fall off" like what is being claimed in this thread.
>>
>>738266476
Also, the only saving grace there is that you can salvage it by making them work together with the Crucible Knights. The Doemenels however, are gonna be hostile forever.
>>
>>738266476
>>738266559
I dunno man if the game has a faction system you should probably pay attention to the alignment of people you are working with so you don't accidentally screw yourself with a faction you may not agree with.
>>
I beat the games without realizing you could put any djinn on any character. Just equipped them all on their like-typed character and spammed the summons. I remember the final boss being rough but still beat him 1st try.
Wish the games were harder and didn't have 20 minute long "cut scenes" otherwise I'd probably replay them regularly.
>>
>>738266641
>pay attention to the alignment of people
This is obfuscated by the fact that you can do all of the faction quest's initial questlines (not including tasks) but the moment you accept their second questline it triggers the lock out where you can no longer complete uncompleted tasks and the quests of the other factions. Deadfire actually addressed this issue by actually communicating to the player to PLEDGE their support for the faction, along with the other factions being said to be hostile when you don't. AND THEN at the end of the two-part DLC, it LOCKS YOU OUT for the resolution needed to convince the Eyeless for things most players reasonably arrive at (regulating animancy, doing the forge knight quest, etc) as a narrative "gotcha!". I fucking hate that.

I like Marsh but he very much is just someone who plays a game then narrates his playthrough. not much analysis going on
