There has been decades of stories about aliens. Stuff like "two families in a farmhouse as little green goblin men assaulted them for two days" or "hikers in the mountains were chased by ufos and creatures for a week" type stuff. So why no good horror games? any time one starts to get buzz like The Hum it gets shitcanned and what we get is always some made in unity trash. It just feels like such a waste of good imagery. Like was it all bunkum to cover up the CIA glowies doing shit to the US citizens? yeah probably, but good stories are good stories so why dont those kind of stories get good video games?
After so much pop culture saturation they're just not scary anymore. When I see a grey ayylmao I think of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgIAjsiX_o8
>>738249101dude, spoiler that image. Literally made me jump out of my seat.Fucking Grey.
>>738249180I don't feel this way, gray aliens have always terrified a deep-seated part of me even as they have been interesting and at times silly with the memes. A proper survival horror about greys that isn't just a walking simulator with jumpscares would be a top 10 games of all time for me and I wouldn't finish it because it would be too scary
>>738249292You think they are spooky?>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO2abOUvLAs
>>738249397I think that movie is very spooky, and I have a coworker who looks a lot like the real-live version of that discredited lady which is pretty silly, but yeah that movie was spooky for me. Especially the scene where the UFO zooms in on the dashcam footagehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7KNXgi3RtU
>>738249101I've had dreams about being invaded by low-flying space ships that are hunting us. The closest I've had to that feeling in a game is Halo where the purple Y shaped ships descend, particularly when trying to ignore and evade them while they shoot at me. On the Halo level I remember hiding in the destroyed human dropships, and you can hear the unearthly sound of the alien ship descending, and then the bark of the elites and shrill cries of the grunts as they search for you.I'd love for that feeling of being hunted to be captured in more video games. Up the stakes by having it be a father trying to keep his young family alive and safe all the while and it'd be even better.See devastated cities, meet justifiably selfish humans hiding out in caves and sewers who will kill you if you stray into 'their' territory. There's so much potential for drama and horror.Speaking of, the only other good alien scenes in vidya:Prey where you first get abducted and see them processing all the other humans.Fallout 3 with you leading a revolt by freeing abductees from other eras of history who were kept in stasis. Both are really cool scenarios that I'd love to see explored in a greater way.
>>738249595The podcast Pod Morten does a really good breakdown on the making of and how much background stuff went into it. Like the black professor? he was the director and it was a total passion project. Its got a very interesting behind the scenes story and that episodes worth looking up.
>>738249603The opening to Prey is the best alien anything in videogames and thats not even a contest.
>>738249603You get it. I wish more people saw the potential and the scariness of it.>>738249660I'll look into it, thank you anon.
Because aliens just kinda aren't scaryYou can have a spooky buildup but it will get ruined anyway when the player sees a duendeIt's the same with skeletons
Aliens aren't scary due to pop culture overexploiting them.
>>738249101The AYYY psyop is supposed to make you think they exist because they're gonna fake an AYYY invasion. You just need to plant the seed in people's heads, nothing more. If you make full fledged AYYY games you're not merely planting a seed in people's heads, but you're creating a whole narrative where people will sort of already live the event in the game, making it less effective than just having a vague belief AYYYs exist.
>>738249765Its all about presentation and shaping the scene. You see an AYY in clear sunlight you will laugh and wave it off. But you see that fucker just walk past the window during that kids birthday party in Signs then during the day doesnt matter. Because the framing primes the audience. Now you make it nighttime in some bumfuck appalachian town or something and you go the potential for the good stuff as long as you use light and shadow correctly. What is it? where did it go? is it hunting you? fucking with you? is it malicious? is it indifferent? which is worse in the grand scheme of things?Good AYY horror should be functionally no different than how our ancestors described the True Fae. Theres a reason some people believe they are one and the same.
>>738249101https://www.youtube.com/@MantisEncounters-n8lI want a game with mantids
>>738249838you have to be more subtle, eglinigger
>>738249838Technically the AYY psyop is to cover up government fuck ups. You look into the actual data and not cherry picked ufo guys selling you a book data and they always correlate with some shit like "The Spooks were testing if they could aerosolise a virus and spread it across a city but the 'harmless' medium they used to test caused allergic reactions and killed 3 people" type stuff. But people dont look into it enough because that ruins the mystery.Like the Roswell crash was just a U2 spyplane the CIA was using the spy on american citizens as part of the red panic and they covered it up purely because they didnt want to admit those planes existed let alone were being used on their own people and would not admit they existed till russia shot one down a few years later. But the alien story is just so much more fun than the depressing "one more for the draw with MK Ultra and the rest in it" realities of life in western north korea.
Ayys terrified me as a child, but the Ayy LMAO meme itself completely defused all that fear, whenever I see them I just think "ayyy lmao".Do you think the ayy meme is a psyop to make us better experimental subjects? Like before being abducted people would be like "Oh God what are you, what is happening to me, what- AAAAHHH GET OUT OF MY HEAD", but now it's like you're getting probed and you're like "ayy its just like South Park lmao, AYYY LMAO, just how high am I rn lmao, dood look at his fuckin head LMAO AYYYY"
>>738250378Nah corn syrup and mass marketing turned people into good human cattle much easier. Best not to think about it. Order in some fast food and let those thoughts drift away. Maybe time for another netflix and chill as the worrying higher thoughts turn to comforting mush. Father knows best.
>>738250096>Like the Roswell crash was just a U2 spyplane the CIA was using the spy on american citizensThere is no reason to do this with an experimental spyplane when you could just have an agent or two in a relevant place and not expose the technology to commies that your argument claims they fear were present.Your theory on roswell is depressing but also very unlikely.
>>738249101I mean this is inevitably going to be an off topic thread because there literally are no horror games based on gray aliens except maybe that shitty Area 51 FPS from the early 2000s but maybe someone knows some obscure indie game and can prove me wrong
>>738250669Bro i dont know how to tell you this but you dont get birds eye photographs of neighbourhoods from the street. You think it happening right near a spy plane testing military base was a coincidence? or it was actual aliens? they've been using the US people as experimental petri dishes for over a century. Its staggering how much shit like MK Ultra or The Tuskegee Experiments can be proved beyond a doubt and people go "naw, couldn't happen again".
>>738250758I remember a year or two seeing in a reel of "upcoming 202X releases" trailers something about a farmhouse at dusk and in first person a farmer was trying to escape aliens and get to his wife only by the time he got to her it was clear some kind of parasite was subsuming her from behind and using her like an anglerfish lure and she burst open with tentacles and he screamed and then it cut to the swing gently moving in the breeze outside as flashes and gunfire and screams come from the house then silence. Never been able to recall its name.
>>738249101>ayys will become real in your lifetimeImagine dying in the forever wars before you even get a chance to see limitless energy and agravs being the stock standard.
>>738249838>glownigs preparing the populace to rally behind a one world government in an attempt to consolidate powerThe worst part about this is even when the plans are complete you will be still incentivized to pay blood tribute towards peds on this side of the spiral arm.
>>738250096>Like the Roswell crash was just a U2 spyplane the CIA was using the spy on american citizens as part of the red panic and they covered it up purely because they didnt want to admit those planes existed let alone were being used on their own people and would not admit they existed till russia shot one down a few years later.Iirc Roswell was an experimental bit of long range monitoring technology to spy on the soviets conducting nuclear testing.
I just want a good X Files game. Closest in modern times would be fucking Deadly Premonition and that aint nearly close enough.
>>738250758>rando was looking to do a 4X/grand strat that improves on what MoO2 and Imperium Galactica did all those years ago by combing RTS planetary invasions, naval combat and orbital supremacy into the usual turn based spreadsheet autism>had to cut his plans down because some glowies started hassling him over a tech tree that included stuff that was hitting too close to homeCan't have anything nice in this fake and gay world.
>>738251904Reminds me of Adam Savage talking about how they were doing an episode of Mythbusters testing certain glowie related myths and when all the evidence was pointing to it being correct a suit from discovery told them to shut it down, erase the DV tapes and destroy any physical evidence of the experiments and they were never told why beyond "national security".

Vinny has done irreparable damage to the reputation of the Zeta Reticulans.
>>738249101because it was canceled
>>738249101Because a game where an enemy with near-magic powers is hunting you is much harder to pull off than one with, say, zombies. In my opinion, next to the unknown motives, the creepiest aspect of ayys are their powers, and these are also the hardest to transfer into a videogame. The most threatening ayys are those that can hypnotize you while you sleep, implant a decive that influences your thoughts, or that put you in a trance the moment the bright light hits you. But those are all things which remove agency from the player character. On the other hand, if you make the player character more proactive by having them dodge and sneak around the ayys, you can easily end up with a duende chasing you around the kitchen table, which is funny rather than scary.I think ayys generally work much better with conspiracy stories dealing with why they are here, how the truth is being covered up, etc. For example, there's only a handful of scenes with ayys in Drowned God, but it's a pretty solid take on that theme.
