Steam controller parts were probably less than 30 dollars per unit. This is the same company that's charging the day one retail price of their outdated 7 year old headset. Meanwhile meta released cheaper and more powerful headsets during that time. Valve knows they have a nice pig and cow farm where they can milk and throw slop all day long. I don't care if xinput is limited and restrictive and holds us back 15 years. It's better simply for the sole reason that it just werks. If Steam Input wants to replace it, make it just werk. That's always been how new tech replaces old, when it becomes simple and hassle free.

Yeah, I'm thinking valve fucked up or their product manager for the controller is a complete idiot. Their silence on the issue other than saying they are working on additional stock is pretty smart though. I kind of think they might have barred players with wallet funds from getting priority since they are probably seeking new money into their digital pool to subsidize and eat costs on the frame and steam box. The release seems more like a financial strategy than a legit release. Most people with wallet funds probably sold their inventory to buy this shit.
