Hey, I enjoyed Hammerwatch. It's not a fair recommendation because I played it with a buddy but it's not too bad solo. It is the roguelike one though so mileage varies on if you can stand that genre.

The whole point of SMT is that you summon demons to fight other demons, in some sort of apocalyptic scenario. You can also convince demons to join your demon squad. Kinda like Pokemon if the '90s moms were right about the satanism.
Best SMT is either 1 for the SNES, or the two Devil Survivors ones for the DS/3DS. Interestingly enough, while the artist most commonly related to SMT is Kazuma Kaneko, Devil Survivors was designed by the same guy who did Digimon Redigitize, Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger, Suzuhito Yasuda, who also did for example Durarara, Danmachi, Yozakura Quartet and Caladrius. Oh, and the first season of Gundam Build Fighters, those designs are pure sex.
I should also add, Persona is a spinoff of SMT. Difference is, Persona adds romance VN-like mechanics.
