Gate keeping doesn't do anything, because there are tons of retarded "OG" people too. In fact, the longer the community exists, the more retarded those remaining OG people tend to be.I play a lot of starcraft 1, and so so sooo many of the remaining og people are just there because they have fucking NOTHING going for themselves so they just linger for the "social" aspect of the game. They don't even like the game anymore, just the "friends" that they have in the community. Then they gatekeep despite hardly even playing the game anymore because they think it somehow elevates themselves as cool. I love the game but I have to push myself away from the community as much as humanly possible because those people are so grating to be around

Nowadays, people just make their own splinter communities involving a thing. Its not like the entire media is being held back by them so they just make their own and there is a good chance that the "new" community ends up being bigger and having more influence than the original group.
