Solid side scroller, dungeon crawler/bullet hell combo. Exploration feels really good, and building your ships stats is fun with the circuit-like connections.

Flyknight is the best one, only down side is it's super short and too easy.

As someone who played both Morhta and Hark the Ghoul, I have to say that the games aren't particularly difficult. They're worldbuilding is fun and interesting though but its a shame that the gameplay doesn't challenge you. The level designs are nice but tend to become empty hallways and set pieces. That being said, Im going to keep trying these games because I still find it interesting to explore. I have an eye on this one for when it releases even if it turns out to have the same issues.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3016620/Alkahest/

For a released game there's Elderborn but honestly I'm not at all a fan of the game, it feels very clunky compared to Dark Messiah, the first act/chapter is set entirely inside claustrophobic caves and you fight shitty ass scorpions and bugs instead of mostly humanoids, it has THE most disappointing depiction of a muscle girl main character(you get to choose male or female, not like it really matters outside of like 2 minutes of cutscenes) I've seen in a while and some of the soulslike elements just suck

I'm surprised both Chaos Galaxy games still fall into hidden gem status but here we are. They're games where you plot to dominate the galaxy, combining the map painting of the Nobunaga's Ambition series with SRPG combat. They're made by a solo dev Chinaman who has put a lot of love into it, creating about a hundred characters, writing lore blurbs for them and the planets you conquer, and making sure every faction in the game feels unique to play and fight against. CG1 is a much more simplistic game than CG2, so if you're new to the franchise you might just want to skip to 2.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/846030/DV_Rings_of_Saturn/

You're a miner in one of the moon of saturn. The gameplay loop is going in, mining rocks and getting out to get paid.
It's a full on 2d newtonian physics space game so not really an arcade space game in that sense.
Crew management, meaningful ships upgrade.
Random events like salvaging ships, discovering a lot of POI, pirates, races, secret colonies etc.

It's such a comfy it's like crack.

This is the kind of faggot shit I expect from le reddit, you brown ESL apes. DURRRRH ONE PERSON IN UTAH BOUGHT DAT GAME ON SALE THREE CHRISTMASES AGO, DAT AIN'T A HIDDEN GEM!. PLEASE, please find a way to fucking kill yourselves. With all sincerity, the world would be a better place if all traces of you were eliminated from it.

Some recs:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1851280/Samurai_Bringer/
Played this for probably 20/30 hours, a roguelite DS-styled action RPG where you collect scrolls to manually edit your face buttons' actions. Different combinations yield different results, and it's a kind of fun mindless hack and slash. There's also a mech version by the same company though I haven't played that one.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1948980/Heros_Adventure_Road_to_Passion/
Hero's Adventure is a tactical RPG with a wuxia setting. I typically hate chinkshit, but this game fucking rules and you can reincarnate (read: replay through the game) and use weapons/techniques you inherit from your previous characters.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1637730/Crystal_Project/
Obligatory Andrew's game. Final Fantasy if Final Fantasy was good again. So, like Final Fantasy before 7.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/249630/Delver/
Delver is breddy fun. It's a bog standard dungeon crawler, but it's still fun. Also it usually goes on sale for next to nothing.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1804010/Labyrinth_Of_The_Demon_King/
Chingchong dungeon crawler with an obvious Silent Hill influence. Drips atmosphere, preddy neat.

Continued:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/951240/Obenseuer/
So, I haven't played as much of this one but it's highly recommended in a lot of indie threads. It seems like an adventure/management sim in first person in a dystopic foreign world. I keep meaning to get into it, but then I get distracted.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1783280/Ghostlore/
A weird SEAbug seeming Diablo clone with a bunch of weird ass customization. Singleplayer, but fun. Cool demons that you don't see in every other game.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1960110/Silent_Hope/
I think by virtue of being made by Marvelous, it's not 'hidden', but I thought it was a fun mindless grind without too high of stakes. Plus you can swap around characters to find a playstyle you like.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1718570/ASTLIBRA_Revision/
Often recommended here on 4chan, a grindy, weird looking metroidvania(kinda?). Longer than you think it's gonna be.

>>738280481

They're both great.

Space Impossible is super tightly designed, quite slow progression but something pretty special. He's been working on it for an insanely long time, but it's due for full release pretty soon so it's a great time to check it out and Sector Space is almost like a top down X4, very sandboxy and despite being procedural it still manages to retain a fantastic sense of exploration and progression, lots of great itemization, station building, mining, manufacturing, a bit of fleet management etc so you're not just buzzing around the galaxy solo etc, you could easily sink 50 hours into it at the moment with what's there and the dev is pretty active.

soon! I just have to finish this demon-looking boss for the demo content to be complete. Webm still have a lot of missing effects, those attacks are supposed to be a rain of lightning bolts and a fire punch that creates a wave you have to jump over
>>
>>738284301
Cool daimon clone.
Does he do the big succ?
>>
>>738284464
nope, since there's nothing to succ (no pawns). For a big attack I was thinking of making him cast a meteor swarm that keeps on raining as the fight goes on once he's down to 1/3 of his life
>>
>>738284301
I like the player attack animations but the demon telegraphing seems kind of awkward. Like he swngs his arms out in front of him when his wings flap back and it makes it look like hes about to fire a laser at you like a DBZ character. But its actually nothing.
I only mention this because I think 80% of making a boss fun is having intuitive animations that activate reptile brain instead of having to memorize them like dark souls' approach to boss animations. Not to say yours is anywhere near that level of uninuitive, but it looks he would actually be easier to fight if you sped him up and you could operate on pure reflex.

Whilst I also shill for obenseuer like some of the other anons a massive disclaimer needs to be mentioned in that it's very likely a never ever EA forever hell game.

0:07. I was watching and it felt pretty intuitive but then thought "I wonder how much of that is just the debug text TELLING me what hes doing" and tried to ignore it and imagine myself playing, I instinctively went to dodge when he jumped back because the way he flung his arms out in front of him made it look like he was going to shoot some fuckoff big beam at me.

As to the timing aspect specifically, the last blue punch thing has a clear telegraph when he kind of cuffs his own arm, and then there's an indeterminate amount of time he holds it there. Your delay isn't so obnoxiously long, but there's no intuitive tell as to how long the delay is going to be.

The fight looks like a lot of fun, just something to keep in mind I guess. Big demon = make him a bit slow is an obvious thing to grasp for, but keep in mind that the more you slow him down, the more mindful you have to be about the timing cues of his telegraphing.

You can compare say ninja gaiden to any of the modern ARPGs, again I'll shamelessly point to the dark souls series here just because its entire identity is built off of this, and in my opinion its what lead to the "artificial difficulty" label. Ninja gaiden has things super easy to dodge because althought you've got as little as 0.1 seconds to do something about it, the band is only from maybe 0.1 second to 0.4 second so its easy to guess where in that range your timing lies. Whereas an attack with a 1 second minimum reaction time sounds easy to dodge but if you haven't memorized that a particular attack is 1.4 seconds, then (if the game has a tendency to have telegraph periods from 1 to 4 seconds for example) then you have a very big range you have to guess.

Been playing Eye of the Commando a bit.
Its a turn based dungeon crawler where you play as a 80's action movie guy. Made by the same dev as Dungeonmans, which is also a pretty good traditional roguelike.

Also, would be nice if some part of the cue for the lightning cast animation actually sync'd up with the first lightning strike, and with a decisive movement. That way the player can build up an intuition for when they should be dodging without having to actually stare at the ground.
The floor punch probably has a similar issue to the blue punch, I can't immediately tell when he's actually going to do it.

I might be applying a different lens here than what you're going for. If you want the fight to be something you have to "learn" as opposed to being something you can just one-shot then you can disregard all this.
>>
>>738268158
This game is not worth the price. Its worth the play through. Wish the game had more content. The next game looks like shit and I think the dev is a troon so support at your own risk.

I honestly thought I'd mind that more than I did, but the combat, while not compelling by itself, is the main draw. The being able to build and shape stuff how you want and arrange a truly interesting team was cool as hell. Also, the exploration is fun and there's a ton of weird, hidden shit.

I have and I've enjoyed it so far. Difficulty is reasonable, neither too hard or easy. Got my ass beat by the third boss. Your hub town can be upgraded as you progress. Different gear actually shows up on your sprite, which is nice. Solo party only afaik, but you eventually get combat pets, that have their own progression The OST is good too.

>fuckoff big beam
those will never happen without a nice amount of particles and lights letting you know that he's about to cast a spell, but I get what you mean. We are humans and seeing an enemy point their arms at us is a clear sign of danger, so I'll review that anim and try to make it look less dangerous. Or maybe not, it's just a small scare after all and once you see it once you'll never think of it as something dangerous. Decisions...
>no intuitive tell as to how long the delay is going to be
agree! it's missing some particle effects like the ones on webmrel. Plus maybe a "charge sound" cue that goes from slow to faster to signal that something's about to blow up
>the more you slow him down, the more mindful you have to be about the timing cues of his telegraphing
true. It won't be too slow nor too fast, and most of the attacks can be blocked with the shield anyway so I hope some of the melee attacks being kinda fast won't be an issue, until you learn them and are able to avoid them without wasting the stamina of blocking with the shield (stamina doesn't recover super fast so it has to be managed)
>>738286737
>fire punch
there's a missing fire effect on his punch. Maybe I could make the fire glow right before he throws the punch downwards, to signal that it's about to do that. I believe that could work.

Yep. That sounds perfect. Bonus points if the fire effect has some kind of ramping multiplier on an exponential curve (that of course stop growing right as he does the slam), that way you can judge the time until impact based on the rate that the effect is "changing".

Yeah fair enough. I mean most of the action games I play have some kind of perfect guard or parry mechanic so I'm wired to be timing my guards, but if your game is less stingy about what you can just block then you've definitely got a lot more freedom in your animations.

>>738288020
I can't either; its a very simple game and there was only one place I got stuck, I had to find a sword that could break some ice barrier and I spent absolutely forever trying to find it before realising I actually already had it, I just didn't know because I couldn't read any of the weapon descriptions.

Honestly even if it had a fan translation, I'm glad I played it without one. Not being able to read any of the dialog or the instructions made it feel like I was a kid again, not knowing what the hell any of this shit was and just exploring and having no idea if I was walking into a dead end or about to fall into some great big dungeon and get hopelessly clobbered. Some dude rocks up and I have no idea if he's my enemy or my friend. I think of him as my friend but it turns out he's my enemy and vice versa. It was very exciting.

I started up A Song of Sunlight earlier. Three hours in and it's seeming pretty impressive for a free game, the story is still being released in pieces but I don't know if I'm anywhere near the end.
If you're willing to give it a shot without looking at anything on the store page, then the slight change in genre feels like a big twist.
If you're not willing to do so, it's a 2D turn-based souls-like set on and in a Blame!-esque megastructure. The combat mostly boils down to QTEs, but there's layers of strategy and you're given only a few seconds to execute your turn so the pace is fast and brutal.
My main criticism is how dialogue-heavy it is, but the writing is competent at least.

I ended up playing it the same way I played Intravenous 1 and Mercanarism, by starting a huge firefight at the first defensible point I find in the level (often the starting point) and saving if I manage to kill over half. I want something where the overworld and towns make sense, not proc-genned nonsense.

I want to make a game about a large, bulky medieval man who discovers a little girl from the future with magical powers in a vast, hidden valley unknown to mankind. She has the ability to alter the environment, and use light magic. As they explore, reality begins to shift strangely, and dark creatures emerge -seeking to capture her. While she can cleanse these corrupted beings with her light magic, she needs the protection and strength of the bulky warrior to fight them off. The setting is quiet and serene, and the girl is portrayed as very cute and melancholic yet still enaging with the man."

>Hero's Adventure is a tactical RPG with a wuxia setting
While I agree with your meltdown overall, this surely doesn't qualify as a hidden gem. Everyone loves this game. Maybe I just spend too much time in Wuxia/Xanxia threads but I feel like Hero's Adventure gets recommended all the time (honorable mention to Wandering Sword, Tale of Immortal, Immortal Life, Ho Tu Lo Shu, Sword and Fairy 7, and Windstop Strategy if any Wuxiafags are looking for more).

Anyway, I wanna recommend Mudborne. Some anon suggested it in the last hidden gem thread I visited and it was really good. It's a game about breeding frogs with specific abilities to solve puzzles, which allows you to unlock more mechanics, greater automation, more in-depth genetics. It feels like Harvest Moon/Stardew etc but there isn't really any farming. Don't know how better to explain it.

>>
>>738301308
player and enemies get stuck on terrain that's mostly flat, you can easily get pushed out of bounds by certain attacks
also maps are really fucking small and linear which defeats the whole purpose of these games it's just nostalgia wank and controls like shit to boot
>>
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1141290/Tactical_Nexus/

This game looks like vomit but it really grows on you in my opinion. It's basically giant puzzle boxes where you try to get high scores for medals where the score is determined by your hp and other stats at the end of the floor, then you get medals based on how well you did that let you buy things that help you try to get better scores, etc. It is like cocaine.

I might be a bit harsh on the game but I really wanted to like it and I don't think all nostalgia wank is without merit

combat seems basic but serviceable, then again i only encountered 3 enemies, one of which was a weirdo eyeball i actually had to juke out and time my attacks

>How is it compared to Star Valor and 3030 Deathwar? The latter has my recommendation.
Sector Space is my favourite of the three for sure and i'd say it honestly looks the best of the three.

Star Valor is eh, very generic, has that early 2000's GPU box art look to it, and it's too "you're the hero" -esque for me, you just pilot one ship, don't build a fleet etc, I prefer just the low key sandbox X-like approach where I can just do my own thing.

3030 Deathwar is good, but it's very story focussed, controls are a bit jank and the art is an absolute clusterfuck of mspaint tier shit that I can't hate enough. A lot of people think it gives it personality, I think it just looks like blurry vomit and clashing art assets. The game itself is good though if you want a mix of space/old school point and click.

>The game is translated from Japanese, so the proper categorizations of some titles are not obvious, and you must figure them out by trial and error. For example:
>The shelf labeled "romance novels" actually is for non-mystery novels in general.
>Puppet Crafting: An Introductory Guide to Automata and Statues belongs on the art shelf rather than on the magical artifacts and enchanting shelf.
>ltimate Choice: Curry-Flavored Poop or Poop-Flavored Curry? belongs on the psychology shelf.

Not bothering with imageless posts and list dumps. I prefer the posts sharing one game at a time with a screenshot, small webm and description attached. It makes the interaction far more humane, the reader knows what to expect and it decreases loss of time. Everyone wins. There's no shame in posting multiple times in a row to talk about several games. I do this all the time in next fest threads or even the occasional demo thread

Yeah, you're encouraged to make it as symmetrical as possible due to Mexican beliefs about holy symmetry, it adds a fun gameplay loop where you're designing smaller symmetrical neighborhoods and planning larger scale symmetry of the entire city at the same time, though it doesn't really need to be 100% symmetrical as the screenshot shows

To people angry about steam store page links being dumped unceremoniously and complaining about a lack of pictures to help you determine whether any of them is worth opening, there might be a somewhat agreeable solution for you. Get the violentmonkey extension for your browser, then install this script:
https://github.com/kani-ge/DLSite-Links-Plus

It shows the header picture of steam and DLsite games that got posted within a thread and tells you which post(s) did it. You can have a glance at what the game looks like almost as if you were lurking discovery queue or next fest but without the videos. I can't thank the guy who shilled this a few months ago in next fest threads enough. It's even useful outside of this type of thread

I would like recommendations for anything else like this weird little game I have been playing. The game is Catizens. It's like The Sims where you manage a bunch of random characters with unique traits and their relationships. You also build and manage their town. But it's also a RPG so you have to equip your cats and go explore and fight monsters. Unfortunately I'll eventually reach an ending with not much to do around the end since the game seems abandoned by the devs. But I would love to have some longer game like this with more replayability. It's fine if it has some normal human characters or something else instead of cats.

The best Pokemon like that I've ever played, fucking love this. Love the monster designs, love the game design. It's still in early access, but the story for the game is completely, what's missing is polish and animations for certain monsters and post game content.

Basic idea is that you can have a team of 5 monsters and combat is play "Beastieball" which is 2v2 volleyball. Each turn you have 3 actions when you're the attacker, and as a defender you can take two actions to prepare for the attack. Moves have directions, ability, status ailments, synergies, abunch of shit and you're ultimately just trying to score points like in Volleyball, which can include just taking out your opponents Beasties which knocks them out 4 several turns and makes them fumble and get scored on.
>>
>>738342598
Yep. It's loosely story based. It's based on real events, basically the people who would later make up the dominant ethnic group of the Aztec empire were foreigners from the north, so it follows them arriving in the valley of Mexico and settling and building some of the cities they did irl
>>
>>738343297
There are a LOT of thigh-based takedown animations, and most achievements net you a new outfit, but it's a fairly standard stealth FPS otherwise with some nice atmosphere
>>
>>738345147
Based is the only game where I accept shitty looking faggot tranny characters simply because I can fucking obliterate their team with my monsters to assert superiority and heterosexual dominance, no sport will be dominated by a woman in my presence.

Oh I know this guy. He got a following making AI dark fantasy content on IG using his own mythos and got a dev to work on a game for him based on this mythos.
It was fun content until he started forcing with pseudo-intellectual philosophy wank into every video and unironically made an "I AM SILLY" strawman punching bag that his smooth talking avatar destroyed with logic and a level head.

Does it look like shit with random unmatched store-bought assets? Yes.
Is it actively hostile to the player without any QoL? Yes.
Was it made by a Fr*nchman? Unfortunately, yes.
Is it the best tactical CRPG combat to have ever been made? Also yes.

Knights of the Chalice 2 isn't meant for newcomers to the genre, or people who just want a power fantasy. It's meant for those who love OGL and tactical combat to test themselves.
There is roleplaying, but it's a sideshow. It has big effects, including which companions you unlock and which factions side with you.
But the star of the show is the AI. This AI is amazing. It will find multi-turn combos, with a goblin wizard casting grease not even on any character but by a pit trap, his summoned golem pushing you in front of it the next turn, then the turn after his ally wizard conjures up a blast of wind, sending you on a fatal slip-n-slide to the bottom of the pit. There is nothing else on the market that gets close. The AI can regularly outperform sub 120 IQ players.

If you like difficulty in CRPGs or tactical combat, KOTC and KOTC2 are the game for you.

>>738285282
Agree with this in general. I'm so tired of seeing developers take the NuFromSoft approach to boss animation and making things borderline unreadable because bosses just wildly flail around constantly so you can never be sure if what you're seeing is an attack or just animation for the sake of animation.

For that video in particular the backward jump from 8-10s reads like an attack because of the boss' arms. The minor crouch with the legs is good, the wings pulling back is good but those outstretched arms make it look like an attack is incoming. I'd either leave the arms at the sides with very little animation to not distract from the crouch and flap or bring them up in some kind of defensive pose to further accentuate that he's getting the fuck out of there.

Also since that looks like a pretty dark environment in general the hand blast thing at 21s could use some particle effects on the chargeup. The boss holds that pose for a split second before instantly firing a blast but the issue is because of how dark it is you can't really read the pose until it's already too late. If there were some faint particle effects providing even a small amount of light prior to the blast being unleashed that would likely help a ton.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/251710/Chainsaw_Warrior_Classic/

Back up for sale again after GW pulled the license for it. It's a $5 digital remake of a solo card game from the 80s.

You play as the Chainsaw Warrior and given the mission to climb a tower and kill the big bad in one hour. Every action uses a little bit of time, so you have to plan your fights and use your kit to its full effect. The game starts with character generation where you roll your stats and items, with lower difficulty levels letting you avoid rolling and just get high stats and pick what gear you want.

Being a solo card game that also uses dice, there's a ton of RNG, so expect to lose a lot just due to bad luck. But it's a fun game regardless since it goes so quickly, you can play quite a few runs in a short span of time. The pacing is great and the game gives a lot of narrow victories where you're never sure if you're going to come out on top until the last shot against the boss.

I played this a few weeks ago but the framerate could get kind of choppy which really detracts from the experience, and while the length of the "small" missions was good, the long missions become a slog when you consider that you can't save mid mission, so there's a lot of repeating the first phase of a mission on auto pilot every time. Thats due to trial and error forcing you to start again but also, more annoyingly, when enemies spot you in circumstances that you wouldn't usually be spotted. My last session stopped when I was way above a dude in the dark at what was presumably the end of the level as he walked under me and he suddenly spotted me. Shut down for the night because I wasn't looking forward to just repeating all that again and haven't loaded it up since.

Here's some precision movement + puzzle games, a daring genre synthesis that somehow got two great games releasing a month apart. Seriously, both are real 10/10s.

Bat to the Heavens is mostly movement/mechanics-based, but all the tech is introduced in a metroidbrania-style way where you have it all from the start but just don't realise it. And planning out your mode of approach in every level is basically a puzzle on its own.
It's also FILLED with the dev's fetish, but it's such an obscure fetish it'll just look like soulful details until someone rips that veil off.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3044100/Bat_to_the_Heavens/

Super Puzzled Cat is mostly on the puzzle side of things, but the levels have secrets and those secrets have secrets and so on, it's a real rabbit hole. Built-in savestating means you too can scum the same single jump for twenty minutes before getting the timing right (unfortunately a real story). But the game is cute which helps.
There's also one unlock for no-hitting the surprise shmup level which I'm never fucking getting who's fucking idea was that

Seconding Puzzled Cat, haven't finished it in full (~80%) but it's the best game I've played in awhile. Bat to the Heavens I liked the idea of but dropped pretty quickly, felt more precise than what I was willing to deal with without save states.

For Cat, what's the intended solution for getting in here? I found a way in that I've used a few times, but it's so stupidly precise there's no way it's the correct way to do it.
>>

>>
>>738366590
Damn, guess I'll never know.
If you've gotten as close as the screenshot, you should be able to make it in doing the same thing with perfect timing. It's the only jump I've had to spend 20 minutes on which is why I don't think it's intended, but it did work eventually.
