What are some risks that companies took that actually worked out? Like surely DKC1 could have been a bad move to reintroduce DK with a new cast, setting, no mario etc but it nails it.

A lot of games that went from 2D to 3D, although that was kind of an expected risk to take. Games like Mario 64 and OoT, while amazing, were developed by Nintendo themselves who already had a stellar reputation for putting out great games. I'd say real risks were games like Metroid Prime, which was developed by an unproven team in Retro Studios. It ended up being an incredible succ
