Sonic games used to have aura. What happened?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgWZc73XnpE
>>738284924unc is pressed over a blue cartoon animal lmao
>>738284924You are euro. You're at best a vassal state to us.
Secret Rings certainly had a talented team of artists
>>738284847Sonic Colours lightened the tone from the Shadow to Unleashed era. Thus, removing a lot of the edge. Gens was equally as unserious. Lost Worlds and Forces tried to make it serious again but the people behind those also had to insert too many quips. Frontiers is them trying to find their footing with more serious stakes after forces fucked everything.
>>738284847Nothing happened, Frontiers had among the best showings of Super Sonic but at the same time, the "nothing happened" is also almost literal: the only mainline Sonic games we've had in 10 years are Forces and Frontiers. Sonic is extremely lucky to have a successful movie trilogy to keep him alive in kids' imagination because otherwise, he would be like how Final Fantasy is now irrelevant for younger players, they have time for their whole childhood to come and go while the franchise only releases a single game.
>>738286179>Shadow to Unleashed era*Black Knight brother. The last bastion of soul before Colors.
>>738284847Soul was renamed to cringe by the irony-poisoned.
>>738286179>SA1: Mostly camp/silly but the stakes are high and E102 exists for feels>SA2: Pretty camp/silly but it has some pretty real moments and everything related to the Ark is darker than anything the series had before it>Heroes: Villain of the week cartoon tier sillyness, very unserious>06: Tried to be very serious, too fucking shitty to judge its story anyway>Shadow the Hedgehog: So over the top in its edgy bullshit it just ends up being totally funny instead>Unleashed: Should be darker, but there wasn't that much story in it anyway>7 Rings/NigKnight: Campy fun with quips, pretty soulful (I only played 7 rings)>Colours: Very bright/light hearted>Forces: Ow the edge, absurdly dark premise and large amounts of death/torture for whatever reason>Frontier: Didn't play I can't get over its "NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN" artstyleThe series has been all over the place honestly, it doesn't really have an identity anymore and SEGA seem to be eternally ran by people who have no idea what they want Sonic to be or represent, I suppose its a miracle such an outdated bunch of characters have any minor cultural relevance at all
>>738284847I am digging that drop C guitar tone
>>738284847Sonic frontiers and shad gens have the spectacle but lack creative unique ideas and settings for that spectacle
>>738289453Frontiers tries hard to be serious. About on the level with 06 but less shitty. I honestly think the storybook series is my preference for the silly-camp/serious-adventure balance.
Pignigger the hedgehog will do anything to stay relevant
>>738289864>About on the level with 06 but less shittyIts funny you say that because outside of the Elise stuff 06 actually sticks the landing better than Frontier.
>>738289919Frontiers definitely ended up more boring, but also less overtly stupid.
>>738284847I miss there being sonic games more often. There used to be a mainline game like every 2 years with spinoffs in between. Between Forces and Frontiers there was a fucking 5 year gap of nothing at all.I appreciate Shadow generations but I really miss all the weird and wonderful spinoff games (Storybook series, Riders, Rush, Rivals, etc.) They were creative and took the series in interesting directions. The series definitely peaked in the 2000's, with it starting to fall off in the 2010's.And I know people like to say "I'd rather wait longer for a good game" but they were actually putting out consistently great games year after year, compared to in the 2010's when development took longer and the games sucked.
>>738291175that's how it is with all modern video game franchises
>>738291175Like >>738291264 said it isn't exclusive to Sonic. No one bothers taking real risk anymore. Kinda sad to see especially with franchises like MH where you're stuck with fuckshit Milds until the expansion if they don't just move on to the next game.
>>738284847Nu-metal Sonic? lmao never played secret rings, reminds me of this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YFLlQqfc1AI'll take it over all the metalcore/electronic tranny shit in Frontiers
>>738291264>>738291351I get that the death of the handheld console plays a part in this, but it's not like there weren't plenty of spin-offs made for main consoles too.I've heard that it's mainly due to the cost of game development being a lot more because people expect better polish, that and the cost of manufacturing more intensive consoles, cartridges, etc. is exceptionally higher now compared to the past. If that's the case, I really feel like we've ultimately lost out through the pursuit of chasing more advanced graphics and technologies.
