game is great I don't need an attractive MC to have fun with a game

Returnal is one of those rare games that doesn’t just invite you to play — it demands you feel, think, and evolve alongside it. From its striking aesthetic to its unforgiving but fair gameplay loop, this is a game that rewards persistence, curiosity, and emotional investment in ways few others in its genre can match.

First impressions matter, and Returnal hits you with a world that feels both alien and emotionally familiar. The art direction is bold — each biome on Atropos is a carefully crafted, evolving ecosystem that oscillates between eerie beauty and visceral danger. The sound design and adaptive score are not just atmospheric — they’re psychologically immersive, essentially turning the DualSense controller into an extra character through its haptic feedback.

Critics who brush off the visuals as “stylized” are missing the point: Returnal isn’t going for photo-realism; it’s building an alien world that feels alive, unpredictable, and deeply affecting.

At its core, Returnal is a bold experiment in blending genres — a half-shooter, half-psychological journey that isn’t satisfied with surface thrills. It isn’t designed to be easy, and it doesn’t apologize for that. What some call frustration, others call challenge with purpose.

If you want a game that holds your hand, this might not be for you — but if you want something that pushes boundaries, that rewards reflection as much as reaction, Returnal stands as one of the boldest, most memorable titles of this generation.

AI really needs to get better with its syntax. It's instantly recognizable now.

Returnal is genuinely a good game. I'm old enough that I don't give a fuck about the MC myself but I can't help but feel that the game could have been a generation-defining hit if they'd just gone with a conventionally attractive MC. Look at Resident Evil Requiem and how overall mediocre the game is yet how well it sold just because of 2 attractive MCs and baseline passing ganeplay. Returnal has actual solid gameplay, it could have done bigger numbers.

the weapons in saaros are pretty lame by comparison

I'm playing Saros right now, and while I'm enjoying it I think Returnal is still a much better game. I like the environments and enemies more.

The story still makes no fucking sense to me as anything other than her being punished for getting an abortion which is really weird given the political leanings of the devs

This is a Sony game? I bought it on Steam lol

I definitely prefer the more alien aesthetic of it. Also, I'm not that far into Saros, on the third "biome" but Returnal seemed to have more weapon variety. Also I'm rarely if ever using the shield ability, it seems kind of pointless when you can just dodge through most attacks anyways.

The gameplay is still really good though, I really like the formula for these games and they are just really underappreciated.

do you not like dodging big balls
>>
Also it's funny because I read that Saros was supposedly "easier" than Returnal, and yet I'm actually having a bit more difficulty with it than Returnal.

In Returnal I only ever died to the first boss once, and after that I never died to any of the other bosses, only regular enemies on a run. It seems like this game is the opposite, I can fight all the basic enemies with ease, but the bosses fuck me up.
>>
Yeah I wouldn't have minded Saaros either.

another thing is the levels are much more linear than in Returnal.

In returnal, I felt like I was backtracking a ton, like almost as if it was a metroidvania. In fact that's one of the main things that I liked about Returnal is it felt in a lot of ways like Metroid Prime. In Saros they use the same level design where each level is multiple areas stitched together in a new way each time you do another run, but this time there's far less rooms with multiple exits to another room, and if they do have them it's just dead ends for a few items and that's it. In Returnal I felt like I was constantly mapping out the entire biome each run, and each biome was much larger and longer than the ones in Saros.

it's kinda wild how much better AI has become relatively quickly and yet you can still instantly identify almost everything made with it. Text, images, video, code -- there's always a tell

>ugly constipated looking hag on cover
>this will surely sell our game!!!
