Would it be fun if you weren't given an interactive map and instead were forced to navigate by the sun/stars/compass?Eg: imagine Skyrim but no 3D map, you had to rely on celestial navigation and in-game drawn maps.
>>738290810It'd get old really quick.
>>738290810So what you want is Arma 3.
>>738290851This. Arma or DayZ and you have exactly what you want.
>>738290879Is it fun tho?
Wasn't there a game that came out in the last few months that used this as a selling point?>no map>no waypoints>just directionsI don't know how well it did or the name.
>>738290810Generally navigating by the stars would take a lot of work to even make possible in the game and would mostly piss people off because they've never done anything like it in real life. A game could avoid having maps and instead have obvious landmarks and shit to let people know which way to go. That would still involve a lot of specifically explaining how to get to the next destination and it wouldn't work if there was too much shit in the way of the landmarks all the time.
>>738290810The game would need at least two different colored moons in the sky at all times. Or at least a bunch of massive landmarks you can see from anywhere. Even then it would get old quick.
>>738290810So, minecraft without mods, maps and F3 (which is cheating)? you answered your own question, dummy
>>738290810There are games that do this but it's real fuckin' easy in good games. Because unlike real life you there's always landmarks and interesting things or else your game is boring.
you don't really use celestial navigation on land beside identifying northwith how game worlds are flat rather than spherical most assumptions break down anyway
>>738290951The Enemy Is Us, maybeor something like that. but from the demo it turned out to be an uninteresting (to me) souls-like
>>738290810>Brigand: OaxacaIt's every bit as fun as it sounds, OP.
>>738290810This made me realize that pc games can save on dev time like this since shitters will just mod in a minimap anyways
>>738290810I would wait 2 days for someone to make an online map and keep the tab open while playing
>>738290810Operation Flashpoint had a mission like thatit was a little forced, but utterly freeform game besides that
>>738290810I saw a trailer recently for a game where you play as a cartographerhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/3905500/Beware_of_the_Cartographer/Looks like there's a demo too
>>738290810Not at all. It already gets exhausting not having a map in something like Hollow Knight or Rain World, now imagine having nothing but landmarks to deal with for everything then trying to return to some location for a quest. Short of the map being extremely small no one is going to be able to remember more than a few hours of locations. There's a reason why Elden Ring hands you map fragments as you progress. No one is going to actually draw maps, that's NES-era nonsense no one wants to deal with.People are just gonna Google user-made maps by the people who actually like that or install a mod on PC and call it a day. Just look at how quickly Subnautica got a map mod and that is defined by its biomes and how they look which makes it fairly easy to navigate. Another great example is Skautfold: Usurper which gives you a very poorly detailed map and you can buy some upgrades to make it slightly more detailed but it never tells you your current location so you're forced to look at the full map like picture related and then spend like three minutes figuring out the general region you are in and then looking at your environment to pinpoint the exact section you're in because it's 1:1 to the actual map. The actual in-game map is way more annoying to use by comparison.
>Go visit a friend>Walk in his room, he's playing Day Z when it was the new hotness>Sit down next to him to check it out>He complains that he is lost and "the map and compass is worthless">Wut? Pull up the map>He does and complains there is no map marker>"You have a compass?">Yeah>"I can find where you are on the map. Climb to the top of that mountain">He does>"Do you know the general area you are?">Waves to about 1/4th of the map>"Good enough. Point your compass at that peak and tell me the heading.">Almost east>"No, be accurate. What is the number on the compass?">93ish?>"Kay, now point the compass at that peak and give me a number.">"Okay, now pull up the map">Scan the map, find the peaks, draw the approximate lines >Point. "You are standing on that peak.">He looks at me skeptically Exactly that peak?>"Yeah.">Bullshit>"Fine. Go straight east. You'll hit this road. Follow it northwest and you'll come to this intersection">He walks, talking shit the whole time>Road, you got lucky>Turn north, go around a slope, there is the intersection >He looks at me like I just did sorcery >"Bro, there is a reason maps look like that. So you can do the exact thing I just did."I guess boy scouts taught me more than how to give one hell of a blowjob. Navigation by stars is tricky and there is a lot of math involved and you have to know the night sky which is hard to learn even if you gave it Earth's sky. Unless it just gave you measurements by mousing over a star. At that point it might as well just go whole hog and give you a map marker. The middle ground will feel half assed and doing it for real is way too complicated for your average schmuck. There's like 5 whole people that would like that and two of them are my dad and I.
>>738292350Oh. And one more point to add to this, having an accelerated time scale would make it WAY harder to get accurate measurements on a star.
>>738292276>needless trip usage>absolute dogshit opinionHoly fuck kill yourself
>>738290810Sea of Thieves had stuff like this out the wazoo for the Tall Tales and even some voyages and it's absolute tons of fun
>>738290929Lol no
>>738290810you described Gothic 1 and 2haven't played Morrowind but I think people said it's also like that
>>738293538nope, in morrowind you have a map
>>738293538>>738293723The directions aspect is also heavily overstated. Most won't let you ask for directions, and are vague when they do.
>>738292350This just makes me want to add this into my game even more. I want to filter retards as much as possible
>>738290810Would only make sense if the game itself was about orienteering, navigation and a sexual connection to Ohio.Open world isn't meant to be in-depth, it is just padding, so it is also meant to get out of your way when you want to play the game's real content.
>>738290810just use fucking landmarks bro
>>738290810check out miasmatafilling out ur map is done via triangulating landmarks
>>738290810i like what darkwood did but only wish they didn't give a red glow around the locations when you reach themthat or severely reduce the radius and/or make the map bigger
