The Dreamcast was natively compatible with this. What was Sega thinking, just that they could relaunch the console in like 2003 with a dual analog controller? Were they insane?
>>

Sega consoles have basically always had controller revisions part-way through. Imagine a world where half of the N64 controllers aren't self destructing. No shame in that.

Dreamcast controller is the original proof that hall effect analog sticks can be fucking awful too.
>>

It being hall effect has nothing to do with its flaws.
>>
>>738292565
That's not true. Things like the spring being what it is, that's due to the hall effect design.
>>
>>738292624
The spring is how you achieve re-centering in any analog stick.

it was probably planned from the start to release an expanded twin-stick controller. it also has native support for Z/C buttons. the dreamcast also has an expansion port at the bottom that was meant for a zip drive of all things so you could store things downloaded from the internet. there are prototypes of it made and you can see photos of it online, iirc the only known surviving prototype is in some hoarders junk pile right now. sega was always scummy they just had cool people developing games for them for a while, now all those people are gone and all that is left is the scummy shell of a company that was originally founded to make slot machines, being paraded around by a much more successful equally scummy casino company

Not really. The shape is still fucked up, the analogs feel like shit, it doesn't have rumble by default and the power cord is attached from the bottom for some retarded reason. It also felt really fucking cheap compared to basically everything else available.
VMUs were neat, but it doesn't make up for everything else wrong with the controller.

And the reason it's stiffer in the DC controller vs the Saturn's is because people complained the latter was too floaty and lacked feedback.
So if you're a hall effect stick and your only point of mechanical contact is the spring, what's the one thing Sega's going to swap out?

You can be like the hard plastic sucks and that's not the Hall effect design's fault. But the stiff spring and the short throw are because it's a Hall effect.

still needs a Select button.

Just make it the dualshock but with a VMU

There's actually a bowl you can lube up to improve the smoothness. Its been 25 years, lube it up and you'll find it feels really nice.

>What was Sega thinking
They were shooting for the casual audience with a simple controller.

LIAR!!

swap the right stick and the action buttons, then give it 6 face buttons and select
>>
Dpad on the left, stick on the right. No face buttons. All triggers.
Or force all games to use a IR lightgun.

Go with the GPU they were contracted to as well, the Voodoo2. That was pretty powerfull. Especially if they went with SLI. And or a low resolution.

But really everyone was already satisfied with a PSX or a N64. Didn't need another console until the Xbox, which should have come with windows.
