SMT VV is one of the better SMT in the series (ignore the Nocturne retards). It has a right balance of the Alignment system, alignment rep, great library of demons, difficulty, and other stuff that they improve in this game like Press Turn. If you do get VV, play the Vengeance route first. You can always play Creation after ward in NG+.

The stories have never been particularly noteworthy. III's story is weak too, the only thing it really has over V is atmosphere. SJ is an amazing dungeon crawler but that kind of game is niche, and it's an already niche series. V just plays exceptionally well and is accessible, it's not surprising it gets praised.
