Is it even possible to make a successful indie game that relies on character appeal, without making those characters obnoxious scrimblo bimblos and wholesome chunguses, or literal communists

It definitely feels like the only "genre" of characters that gets traction online

Yes but most indie devs are hacks who are relying on porn artists to do free advertising for them.

The average person can only care about 150 people, probably less, probably dramatically less in the modern era due to parasocial media actors living rent-free in their brain.
Scrimblos are the only way to sidestep this, something with enough anthropomorphic traits to trigger your ability to empathize, but with insufficient anthropomorphic traits for your brain to give it the same "Fuck of we're full" response your brain would give to random cashiers and the homeless.

No social media algorithms won't promote anything else
