These are some early concept art from the very first concept of Highuard
The game was meant to be a sort of open world multiplayer fantasy FPS with teams that would do quests and take part in events for various factions.
Players would customize their own avatar both in appeartance and with gear and weapons from various factions or obtained in quests.
The open world was huge and had cities and settlements for various factions (many of the guns the game had were styled precisely around certain faction aesthetics, like Borderlands guns made by certain corporations) and there was also the possibility to build bases/fortresses for players. From that the concept of players summoning mounts and obtaining materials, as well as the shield breaker, an excalibur style sword that would be obtained by players.

Later the game proved to be way too ambitious so the project shifted to large multiplayer matches trying to blend some of those elements like looting/obtaining rescources and mounts, while also cutting customization in favour of classes. Those classes were supposed to be characters that belong to the woerld of Highguard, the various factions and cities.

Forgot to mention that the game had of course PVE content alongside the PVP, as seen in early concept arts with bosses like the golem
