>>738316534>what about wizardry and might & magic? They're fun.Wizardry 1-3 & 5 are pretty straightforward. If you've played a japanese DRPG, they're basically copying Wizardry 5 so it's very similar. Start in a base town that's basically a menu, make characters of various classes, dive into a dungeon and clear them floor-by-floor, difficult enemy fights, stuff like spinners and damage floor traps, frontline has normal combat while backline is protected and can only use spells/spears/bows, etc.Wizardry 6-8 is more "open world" in that you make camp and rest to recover, there is no main "town" you return to, and you need to go out and explore.Wizardry 4 is the oddball, definitely still a dungeon to get out of, but has a lot that it does differently.Might & Magic is sort of similar to Wizardry 6-8, where there's a big world and you run around in it. But the games are more plot-driven, with you having quests that lead up to a big fight at the end. There's also more focus on spells that let you fuck around and "break" the game, like flight and water walking, while Wizardry spells are mostly just combat and navigation.>>738321273Legends of Amberland is both on GOG and Steam, all three games.>https://www.gog.com/en/game/legends_of_amberland_the_forgotten_crown>https://www.gog.com/en/game/legends_of_amberland_ii_the_song_of_trees>https://www.gog.com/en/game/legends_of_amberland_iii_the_crimson_tower>https://store.steampowered.com/app/873890/Legends_of_Amberland_The_Forgotten_Crown/>https://store.steampowered.com/app/2110840/Legends_of_Amberland_II_The_Song_of_Trees/>https://store.steampowered.com/app/3823520/Legends_of_Amberland_III_The_Crimson_Tower/

>>738322442Does EO mapping get more interesting later on? I only played the first couple floors, but I didn't like all that much how you are permanently told your location and heading, since a lot of what I find interesting about not having an auto-map is that it opens the game up to making you lose track of those things, e.g. with a silent spinner or teleport.

Don't really care if it's some ancient Commodore 64 thing, although something not too eye-bleeding and obtuse would be preferred.
>>738322398>I've never played EotB before, but now I want to try it out. It's the first blobber i've ever played so I have absolutely no point of reference whatsoever, but i'm thoroughly enjoying it.>>738322519>Then prepare your anus, the real disorientating fuckery hasn't even begun kekGod damn it, although now that I know the game is going to throw crazy shit at me i'll be a little less confused the next time, but the first time it does it with zero warning, you just think you're plodding through a regular sewer then you find yourself going in circles but that makes *no* sense and is physically impossible in the space you're supposedly in, then you try to backtrack and it gets even weirder. It's a rather brilliant use of otherwise very basic level layouts.
>>738322759It will always show you as an arrow
>>738323147>plodding through a regular sewer then you find yourself going in circles but that makes *no* sense and is physically impossible in the space you're supposedly in, then you try to backtrack and it gets even weirder.*sip* Level 2, good times. When you're done with the level go and look up a guide and just see how much pressure plate/teleporter/illusionary wall fuckery there was.
>>738323138The Bard's Tale is pretty good. You probably won't complete the entire trilogy, but once you've finished exploring the first area you're ready for the second, and the game requires some thinking so it isn't as basic as just clearing one floor and moving onto the next. The biggest problem, perhaps, is that some things can end up unclear so it might not be easy to know if you're supposed to be somewhere or not. It turned out that, when I'd played Bard's Tale 1, I'd accidentally skipped an entire dungeon. Thankfully, it was pretty easy to clear when I went back. It's also kind of ugly. Even with the remaster, the art doesn't look that great. It's certainly workable, just not like what you'd expect if you look at Grimrock or the recent Wizardry 1 remake. There is a big jump in the puzzles when moving from Bard's Tale 1 to Bard's Tale 2. BT1 might have around five puzzles in total, depending on how you define them, while every dungeon in BT2 has a puzzle and you'll want to write down clues in BT2 to help figure things out. The puzzles in BT1, by comparison, are pretty straightforward - the biggest question is if you've run across the clue you need yet, or not.

Out of all the Wiz games I've finished (1, 2, 3, 5, Gaiden 1 and 2), I think 5 was the best. Still, Gaiden 3 and 4 give me good vibes but I think I'm gunna do Wiz 6 next and maybe just do the other two Dark Savant games before going back to spinoffs.
>>738325909I would not recommend that Wizardry 1 remake. On paper it's really cool with all the toggleable options but it's so fucking slow in battle, and Wizardry being that slow is just a crime. Animations take too long and they all play one after another. Instead I'd recommend either the PS1 Llylgamyn Saga and New of Age of Llylgamyn Saga options as they're pretty close to Apple ][ balance wise and do have optional QoL like the automap, or maybe the GBC releases as they look quite nice, SFC does too.

>>738321443>you wasted 1 hour of your lifeWithout fail, this argument comes down to whether or not you're interested in having an experience, or just playing a game. Nobody remembers glancing at a minimap, but you would absolutely remember that first time you played whatever dungeon crawler and got lost, and then realized where it all went wrong and fixed it.Neither desire is objectively wrong, by the way, so don't bother taking what I just said personally.
