This game's levels look so unnatural, the uncanny mix of high-detail models and 1996 style brushwork looks HORRENDOUS. How did such a shitty engine catch on for so many years despite this obvious limitations? Other games transitioned to lightmapped models/meshes while Valve stuck with this antiquated Quake 1 style BSP brushwork for their levels bedrock for 20 YEARS?! A total nightmare to work with as opposed to just modeling everything. Only 32k brush face limit per level? PATHETIC.

You don't hate Half-Life 2's engine enough.

Nice bait thread. Didn't read btw.

Source 2 resolves a lot of the worst excesses of the Source 1 engine.

Look at how obviously blocky these games are, how the high res textures look weird, and how they inevitably clash with high poly NPCs or props. While games like Far Cry, COD, Crysis looked fully natural by 2007, Valve continued this blatant "blocky level design with high detail props" mismatch into that era and it would show in Episode 2 and Portal 2 and CSGO would struggle to fight against.

And dont even get me started on gmod.

Right here, one of the most blatant showcases of engine limitations.

Play the game and take a shot every time you see 1998 style basic brushwork that is low poly paired with high poly props. You may die.

just because tons of third worlders have toaster rigs incapable of running anything better doesn't make the engine good

HL2 came out in 2004. The source engine was revolutionary in many ways but when you're the first to do something you're almost never the best.

Do you want nice or artistically sound? For a game relying on photorealistic environments, it does so rather poorly seeing as it doesn't even support prop lightmap UVs.

Try making any real life location and straying off the grid or using natural shapes, you will have a bad time.

The rare examples rely on external software and it is a tedious, time consuming process taking up a chunk of your life to make even a single map. And even then it is held back by the engine.

Source was the living example of "we have purposefully trained him wrong as a joke" wasting countless peoples lives for 15+ years and beyond.
