That's what all Mario games are like, though. There's no slow-burn Mario platformer. You might've dressed it up cynically, but calling it a "dopamine injection roller coaster ride" is practically identical to calling it "fun", regardless of whether you prefix it with buzzwords like "forced".

Wrong. 2D mario games used to offer challenge and attempted on doing interesting level design. Wonder throws that all out and focuses only on being a gimmick showcase.
I don't remember ANY difficulty moment in that game other than the very last minute of the game where you're forced to use the invisibility power up in the final secret level.

It should be fun because there’s clearly a lot of imagination put into it, but the lack of challenge just makes it boring and forgettable. Having the quipping plant say “Wasn’t that fun?!” Doesn’t mean it was at all

Nintendo's trajectory indicate they have permanently abandoned user driven platforming in favor of prescriptive platforming design and it has killed 2D Mario. Wouldn't be surprised if they apply the same design principles to the next 3D Mario.

The issue I had was every level is just as easy as the first one. One or two of those challenge maps were okay but most levels felt like you could just push the stick to the right and you'd win

I dunno. Wii and U are better games, sure. 1 is a coin toss, the design philosophy is there but it's definitely the easiest 2D Mario ever made, I want to say Galaxy 1 is harder than it. 2 is rightfully buried in the annals of history, if not for its weak coin gimmickry then for what it symbolizes as Nintendo's first ever embrace of DLC practices. It is the bottom rung of 2D Mario and deserves no better than that.
