One interesting finding is
>Consumption of game guides varies by generation
>Gen X indexing higher on tips videos
>Millennials on map tools
and
>Generation Z on build guides.

Basically Gen X wants to be told advice on how to beat the game
Millennials want to be told where everything in their open world triple A games
and
Gen Z wants someone else to spoonfeed them the answers on how to play the game most efficiently
>>
>>738320836
Gen Z is competitive and wants the meta builds but you wouldn't get it unc since you're bottom scoreboard anyway
>>
I see a lot of this watching my younger relatives play game. The exact moment they have to think for themselves they take out their phone and google it. My nephew got TotK on release and every time he entered a Shrine he just put the name of it onto youtube.

When I asked him to try and figure it out first he just said "I'm not wasting any time."
>>
>>738320836
So how exactly do they gather this data?
I doubt many people have ign accounts
>>
>>738320836
Fascinating.

>>
>>738321037
I think when you're young you really really don't appreciate puzzles.
I'm mid 30s and love games like The Talos Principle 2 more than anything now.
>>
>>738321037
Not their fault though, so many AAA studios abuse FOMO now. Even some singleplayer games have content that you can permanently miss out on if you don't do it in time.
>>
>>738321037
No wonder classic Zelda is dead
>>
>>738321037
My younger cousin does this also, when we played WoW he constantly just copied talent builds from top players when we did challenge modes together in MoP but he didn't know how to actually play so he would fail anyway.
>>
>>738321037
Are you seriously having nostalgia over spending hours on a puzzle as a kid pre internet era? Unless the game is an outright puzzle game devs need to fuck off putting them in games.
>>
>>738321037
That's fucking disgusting. What the fuck is wrong with kids these days?
>>
>>738321206
I can relate, hated puzzles when I was young too, still not too crazy about them. But I simply didn't play the games that heavily featured them. I think it's more FOMO culture making people waste their time on things they don't care about while "optimizing" their consumption of it in order to not waste time, ironically enough.
>>
>>738321037
Those shrine puzzles aren't even hard. I remember in like a third of the BOTW ones you could cheese it or abuse physics in fun ways.
>>
>>738321037
>friend claims to be huge Baldur's Gate 3 fan
>cave in and buy it, actually enjoy it and do 2 full playthroughs
>this motherfucker has 409 hours in the game and never got past the chapter 1 Creche
>he keeps restarting and trying to play content in a specific order to get his new youtuber approved team build asap
>eventually gave up and just watched all the cutscenes and interactions on youtube
>won't stfu about BG3 being an amazing game
>"Oh? Then why didn't you fucking play it?"
>NPCangry.jpeg
>>
>>738321402
nta but unironically I have really fond memories of figuring out a few difficult old game puzzles as a child mainly because back then I was always in a room with a lot of other kids my age or family members so it was neat being the only one to figure it out and everyone cheering me on after the others failed for like an hour.
>>
>>738321109
I'm pretty sure everybody at this point has an online profile with tags, names, ages and web history available to any online site with just a simple query request

You sound like a dumb motherfucker to be honest, if a puzzle in any video game actually takes you a meaningful amount of time to figure out, your time isn't nearly as valuable as you think it is because you're clearly too fucking stupid to have anything actually important to be doing, and no, your management shift at home depot isn't important.
>>
>>738321703
>yeah true but isn't that illegal for IGN to access?
Nah, if it's posted to a server somewhere that people can access publicly, it's more or less free game unless it's something like private medical info, and even that's not always really protected.
The government itself technically isn't allowed to snoop on your traffic and activity directly without a warrant, but even they can get around that by paying companies to do it for them.

TL;DR, if you or anyone else puts it on the internet, it's pretty much free game.

All I know about Gen Z is they're addicted to Fortnite and Roblox, both of which are FOMO central.

You haven't been paying attention. Fortnite is Uncslop now. Even Tim Sweeny, the autistic retard, openly said the playerbase is dying because their audience is growing out of Fortnite and Gen Alpha watch streamers 24/7.

>>
>>738321206
Can't relate, when I was a kid I had patience for them. Now if I take more than 2 seconds to solve one I get extremely angry and have to look it up because I know some human filth on this site did it faster and I can't stand the idea of being worse at something than the worthless genetic sludge on here, and then it retroactively ruins the game for me forever because I can't unlearn the solution and the fact that I had to look it up and cheat sits like a splinter in my brain forever. Fuck whatever monstrous sociopath invented puzzles, they are nothing more than psychological torture devices.

I tried to play Diablo 2 as a Necromancer just winging it and partway into it I realized my build was dog shit awful so I just looked up the "correct" build and started having way more fun with it. Some games are just designed in that way where if you try to do your own unique thing it's a complete waste of time and not at all what the developers of the game intended. They wanted you to look up how to do stuff.

Same happened to me but instead of looking it up someone told me in a random bnet game this is back when iron maiden was super overpowered
so I just put points into it and all of a sudden I was having a really easy time on my baby necromancer.
>>
I like how IGN's youtube account has like 20+millions subs. . . all bots and kosher ally youtube knows this, even gives them more no doubt.

I just hope devs don't fall for it and think these game journos have any influence, gamers don't care what they think.

When I was a kid I’d always look up and use cheat codes. At least for me, challenge was something I only learned to enjoy later.
>>
>>738321347
Talent builds in every iteration of wow are brain-dead anyway if he was doing that then you definitely know he didn't even read any of them or think for 0.5 seconds
>>
>>738325378
Well it was challenge modes and the high end players use abnormal builds but they run meta comps and do crazy stuff.
My cousin is really really bad so there was no way he could pull it off. I tried to talk him out of it but he wouldn't listen and then he felt bad because we had to basically run a weurd double healer (one hybrid focusing on heals with main healer) and cheese them to carry him through it.
>>
>>738320836
>Gen Z wants someone else to spoonfeed them the answers on how to play the game most efficiently
It’s more grim than that.
They’re playing f2p shit like Genshin, Destiny, or Warframe where determining if a piece of equipment is better or worse is genuinely difficult because of how obtuse the loot systems in those games are.
>>
>>738321135

34 here, played a monkey island game for the first time a few weeks ago.
Got absolutely booty blasted by the puzzle and ending up looking up a guide.
>>
>>738321206
I'm the opposite. I would sit down and figure it out in my youth, now I give it a few good tries and then look it up so I'm not burning up my limited amount of free time.
>>
>>738321206
>>738321402
I don't look up puzzles. I just take a break before solving them. They just kill the pace of a games because they don't teach you anything about it in the action segments.

theyre for fun

It's a fucking Zelda game, the puzzles are the selling point. It woudl be like if you bought a crossword or sudoku book and just copied all the answers from the back. What the fuck is even the point?
>>
>>738331792
there are people that do this. the illusion of completing or liking these puzzles is more appealing to them then actually doing it for it's own sake.

I don't like missing content because odds are I'm not playing through a game twice

the point of a game is being challenged. if you just skip all the parts that are challenging you're defeating the point. if you're skipping specifically the parts that challenge your IQ its a sign of low iq

no, I remember playing through the early levels on my own and then spending hours with my cousin on later puzzles to the point where my parents would yell at me to get off the phone.
