There was this weird "straight shota" dating game that was included in those shareware compilation CDs in the 90s. You played as a student and would date the female teachers. There was no nudity or sex or anything explicit but it used real photos which were actresses who had their appearance slightly changed and had midi versions of licensed music like Bruce Springsteen and George Michael. I think it was called Teacher's Pet or something similar.

>Serani Poji [ja], a fictional musical group within the game, was jointly developed by Sasaki, producer Yukihiro Fukutomi [ja], and singer Yukichi. The group is heavily influenced by the Shibuya-kei music genre, and would go on to release several records as a legitimate musical group.[5]

L.O.L.: Lack of Love
>Lack of Love (or L.O.L.) can be considered a genre-defying game, though it has strong elements of adventure (problem-solving based on exploration) and RPG (character growth and management). The game's unusual premise is the evolution of an alien being.

Tokio
>The framing of the game is that the Tokyo metropolitan government, sick of having nowhere on Earth to expand, puts up a space station, “Tokio,” and declares it the 24th ward of Tokyo. So on top of the usual city-management, electoral campaigning, and government-policy stuff, you also have to set space shuttle schedules (it is an Artdink game, after all,) manage oxygen, fly people to the moon, and buy supplies.

The answer to this question is indirect, but very interesting.

There’s an archetype of user in the retro gaming scene that plays and records footage of a lot of extremely obscure video games, including untranslated Japanese indies; an archetype of user whose rise to cult status coincided with the increasing popularity of ironic/facetious humor on the internet in the 2010s, so they give you the impression of being very self-aware and in on a lot of in-jokes, but, in reality, they’re actually doing it unironically and want you to think they’re a lot smarter and cooler than they actually are.

These users are the predominant source of the anti-Haunted-PS1 rhetoric on the internet. They might give you the impression that the only way to play a true video game that’s authentically retro is to play games made by other people at their level of intellect and that anything attempting to imitate Quake-style polygons in a modern engine like Ultrakill or Paratopic are tranny poser shit, when, in reality, a lot of games like that are more sincerely made by smarter people than a lot of what this specific type of user is interested in.

The most well-known example of this type of user would probably be Saint (Saintttimmy), who occasionally gets posted here, but there are a lot of guys like him that have similar policies.

I would just recommend playing anything that looks good and doesn’t have obvious pride culture/Marxist stuff like pronouns.

Everything has the fun sucked out of it if it's done for money. There's something undeniably cool about old maps and the fact some random guy 30 years ago could've put ANYTHING in there, but it's not as fun when some dude is forcing himself to act scared at the Gman to an audience of children to pay his rent.

I think their last truly oddball game was Deracine in 2019. Duskbloods looks cool aesthetically and there's weird stuff IN their games like the mimic balls, but it ain't the same. Goblet Grotto plays around with conceptualism of a videogame, while AotK is a more or less straightforward story, which is not as exciting I suppose, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

There was this game called "home" that someone posted here years ago, some pixel "experience" thing with different short chapters work going to work or something while some 80s song played in the back.
He even found a download file because a game named "home" is a bitch to find. If you search it, you won't find normally unless you already know what it is.

I really liked The Norwood Suite from Cosmo D. It's not weird in the same way as like LSD or Yume Nikki, kind of a conventional walking simulator game with light puzzle stuff, but the vibe/setting are very cool. >American

Look for people who made this stuff before it became popular. Get a general taste of their other work to see if they're posers or not.

I do believe there is similar volume of weird games released on the internet after 2020 like before, but they just get overshadowed by trend chasers and larpers.
To give an example of a weird game made after 2020, 亡霊の大地(Land of Ghosts).

>>>Safe edgy and surface-level "weird", doesn't tackle topics that are actually seriously taboo
This is probably the biggest one for me
>Oh, my game is SO EDGY bro!! It would be sooo banned if it became mainstream!
>What are the themes?
>Depression and trans shit
>Also if you make lewd art of my charactes I'll send you death threats

People have really gone all-in on making claiming the protag's imaginary, coping-mechanism friends as trans representation. All because you can switch between them. The entire game is based around a brain tumor.

What do I put in my freak game to make sure no troony zoomies come near it

Sincerity and originality instead of insecurity, references and memes

Blacksouls is the only game I've seen them bounce off of when it was trying to gain traction on twitter even if I don't recommend going that route.
In my opinion just not encouraging or referencing lgbt themes it is good enough, typically those communities only grow and snowball if the creator publicly shows support and interacts with them.

Reading the official list of cited influences for AotK is like drinking poison. There really are few things in this world worse than watching a niche video game person with a weird, idiosyncratic ethology get drawn into mean girl politics and start hating themselves to get through the production cycle of a new video game. I can’t ever play a Catamites game again, now that he’s done this.

They're attracted to good games so just make unrepentant dogshit. Works like a charm. Or maybe stop being so sensitive?

>it's ACTUALLY an extremely competent 3D Banjo-Kazooie style collect-a-thon

Amazing sound track too

Blame social media and the average current year internet user's constant desire to appear more interesting than they actually are. (This includes 4chan anons)

Recently I listened to an ASMR reading of all the entries in the dream journal that inspired this game and they were all fairly boring.
Literally every single anon who posts their dreams has more bizarre/entertaining dreams.
I’m guessing that’s because the vast majority of anons are legitimately mentally ill.

this board discovering this game is probably the most surreal thing i have ever seen here

the fact it was made in 2002 and is so obscure disturbs me like im viewing something cursed especially hearing that song

There's more? That would definitely lessen the appeal. To me, Space Giraffe is some weird Xbox LIVE Arcade title I only played the demo of.
