Reminder that GRU was added to the game in the first place because of valve trying to balance for competitive tf2.

Valve were trying to shoehorn heavy into 6s at the expense of the balance of normal games. And it took the very competitive scene they were trying to pander to banning the thing for them to realise they were making a fucking mistake.

release heavy didn't have to deal with being an easy target for huntsman headshots or jars, all teleporters were level 1, the payload cart didn't exist, the only advanced mobility that heavy had depended on the syringe gun of all things, and it took an additional 2 years after release for pub scouts to actually get good at playing the class aggressively like the DM monster that he always was.
release heavy only had shotgun because TFC heavy had a shotgun like QTF heavy had before that. It's a formality in the loadout but it's really unnecessary because of how strong the minigun's damage output is. You can talk all you want about responsiveness and flexibility but the core skill that heavy players need to develop is gamesense to never be caught without the gun ready to go.
It's why the Uber update's Tomislav was a big middle finger to all existing heavy players, as their class became so retard-proof that valve had to actually nerf the poor guy.

the old complaints about axtinguisher were misplaced. the actual target of their ire was the old airblast acting as a stun that robs you of all of your mobility, but the axtinguisher was in the kill feed so clearly that's the problem. If you used axtinguisher with the old backburner (no airblast at all), landing the crit was actually fairly difficult to do.
Then when they gutted the axtinguisher in bizarre ways (slower draw speed and only crits from behind?????) people just switched to the reserve shooter for the exact same ez bake combo of airblast stun into a followup, except now it worked at range instead of just at dick-kissing reach.
RS didn't belong on pyro, and the old axtinguisher would've been fine if they just stopped making the airblast take your air control away.

Comp players just want to play quake, not TF2. Which is fine if that's what you want, and they should be allowed to mod the game how they please, ban whatever they want, and play how they want when in their own servers. But the rest of the game should not be changed because of how a subset of people want to play. Deathrun players don't want deathrun in the official map pool, comp is a separate gamemode and is no different in this case.

the damn thing didn't need the litany of nerfs it got, they went overboard with it as they usually.
at the very least it should deal normalized damage regardless of where on the body you hit them, instead of calculating the damage based on how far away from the center of their collision hull it is. They changed that with how grenades and rockets worked ages ago, the caber could at least use that as a general quality of life fix. this would bring it's damage above 125 at all times instead of requiring you to crouch and hit him in the liver

the only way that 2009 pyro was actually capable of dealing with a competent original DR spy would be to pin him to a wall and have a dispenser brought up so he'd never run out of airblast ammo. the classic dead ringer was so busted that you could have written a feign-spam script to constantly have the 90% damage resist active and since the cloak didn't have a drain-on-activate that it has now you'd regen back to max ready to spam the DR again after every tick.
at that point you've commit so many resources just to stopping the spy from accomplishing anything that you may as well be dead the whole time.
