The thing that bothers me is how mediocre the animation and VA is. Yes the original game had scuffed acting but it was the perfect amount of charming shitness. Kind of like how they couldn't redo Silent Hill 2. It's too iconic.For all the cinematic pretensions, the characters have that thing where they're seemingly auto-lipsynced like Bethesda games. Pigma's betraying Star Fox and Peppy looks completely dead-eyed. You would really expect higher production value considering the limited number of cutscenes. This is supposed to be a fun space adventure; we need exaggerated character expressions to convey the characters' emotions and heighten the drama.

Fox looks uncharacteristically jaded/old/gritty. Everyone else looks basically how I'd expect but it's not a very memorable art style. In general the game seems to lack the camp charm of the source material, it's like an Xbox 360 era throwback and I'm not sure who it's trying to appeal to. Ending the direct with a lengthy original cinematic is just a bizarre choice for this type of game, NOBODY gives a shit about the story.
Personally I've never been a fan of the fact that the series art style basically just became "64/smash designs" for every game post Assault. I think these new ones could use some tweaking in a lot of places, but I prefer it over what we've been getting before and what we got in the movie.

The Galaxy movie made me want a 2D animated series.The James McCloud cutscene was terrible. Even the movie version gives him a narrower mouth when the cartoony style would let them get away with having a wider one, foxes IRL have much narrower snouts than Fox's wide bell face and trying to slap a realistic appearance over that shape ends up looking off. New Fox actually looks pretty decent from the sides when you can't see how crazy wide his mouth is, IMO, do something about that and he'd probably look alright.

The criticism reads like severe case of autism. Its not bad, its just not what you expected. Like someone brought a cat into dog competition, and the judges are dumbfound how a cat is failing every single category its being judged for.

The designs are the least offensive part (except for Katt, she straight up looks like a meth addict). My main issue is that this is the third remake of 64, and unlike Zero, this time it looks like it's straight up an almost 1:1 copy but with modern graphics and cutscenes.Normally this wouldn't be an issue in an era where remakes are just title names to whatever the developers want to do, piggybacking from the original games, but again, this is Star Fox 64 again again. I'll probably buy it anyways, but hopefully there's new stuff though I doubt there will, and I hope the online multiplayer doesn't get stale after a couple of matches too.
I think the digitigrade legs are a good stylistic choice, but the proportions are awful. The lower legs should be longer and the paws a bit wider.

The direction that Illumination went was both something that better fit the Mario universe and is also closer (visually) to what people are familiar with when they think of Star Fox. If you actually look at the designs there's not much of a design to them at all. There's no informal subdivision of the faces, no stylization, no nothing, although where as some characters look like they could be dressed up animals (with some uncannily human eyed), you then have others that look closer to their original design creating this weird mishmash. I legit think Nintendo hired some western art director for this one. It's just so insanely bad that I can't imagine somebody internally doing it.
