>Here, Gordon. It's that incidental tool you randomly picked up during the Black Mesa incident as a quick happenstance means of defense near the start of the game, no doubt old and well worn at this point. Guess it's your iconic weapon now! Nevermind that a stun baton (which I acquired via my undercover Civil Protection duties) would probably be twice as useful! Take the fucking crowbar, Gordon!
This shit was retarded
>>
what if he has to open a wooden box
a crowbar would be much better for that job
>>
>>738364376
Valve writing, please understand.
>>
Why the fuck would a stun baton be better? It has even shorter range and isn't lethal. Are you retarded?
>>
>>738364376
Crowbar is better for breaking shit in the environment than the stun baton.
The point of the stun baton is to incapacitate not kill.
The crowbar is better for killing.
Also the HEV Suit gives a considerable strength boost meaning a Crowbar is probably hitting like a truck.
Its why you can literally kill armored opponents using a crowbar in the game.

You can't really open crates with a stun baton.
>>
>>738364587
Yeah Gordon Freeman was just some unlucky stem sperg with a gay ponytail in a power suit. Later games make him out to be a chad action badass
>>
Keep in mind that Barney was not anticipating the insane level of crackdown Civil Protection was going to perform on the Underground Railway, he figured Gordon would have a relatively quick and easy jaunt to Black Mesa East. In retrospect a stun baton would've been better, but hindsight is a bitch.
>>

the bit in half life alyx where they think the subject in the massive futuristic containment apparatus is gordon, random guy in a power suit, made me chuckle

the stun baton is not a normal cattle prod, it is a piece of alien technology that can be set to kill

the HEV suit does not provide any measurable strength boost
the stun baton is an unrivaled rape stick in HL2 DM

I do agree that the enemies, the setting (and even the weapons IMO) are worse in HL2.
Yeah you have some more variety of headcrabs and zombies that are cool, but I'd like to see more alien enemies like the grunts, the bullsquid, the big headed alien dudes... not to mention better bosses. The 'bosses' in HL2 were kinda uninspired. Also, the combine soldier/metro cop varieties are all basically the same.

In general, HL2 is good overall, but I much prefer HL1 over 2.
Better setting, better atmosphere, better enemies, more difficulty.

Back to the topic though, do you not ever replay games you enjoyed previously? Over the years I'll forget parts of some of my favorite games and going back and seeing them again makes me happy. Like Mike Toreno (or whatever the CIA guy's name is in SA) sneaking up behind CJ in the airfield, and his paranoid dialogue. I replayed SA last year, and totally forgot about those missions.
Would you consider that nostalgia?
Last question: does modding a game with new content count as nostalgia to you? I haven't done a vanilla morrowind run in... Idk several years. But when TR completes a couple new regions I'll play through for the new content in familiar systems.
Sorry if you're just trolling for (you)s in a HL thread. I just think "nostalgia" is a fascinating concept and has a really wide definition in the zeitgeist

Because City 17 is the largest remaining urban center and thus would have the most resources for continuing research that began at Black Mesa twenty years ago. Naturally everyone of importance would congregate there.
>>
>>738370836
They were all coordinating with the Resistance. It's not something that needs to be explained. Barney, Kleiner, Eli all knew each other personally.
>>
>>738370836
>Because City 17 is the largest remaining urban center
no proof of that, in the terminal at the beginning of HL2 you can see that there are a lot of other numbered cities, 17 is just the one that gordon and everyone from black mesa ended up going to for whatever reason. in fact city 17 seems like a backwater, as construction was only just finishing at the time of HL:A and huge swaths of the city are uninhabitable quarantine zones. the only real reason I can think of is breen being there
>>
>>738364587
The thing is in HL2 it at least makes sense from the lens that the Vortigaunts hyped you up after you liberated them helped Gordon's image, that plus the fact that the resistance's leadership is 50% Black Mesa personnel that saw you tearing people in half back there.
>>
>>738366015

Why is Gordon considered a leader of the resistance when he just silently does whatever he's told

>only reason I can think is Breen was there
Lol
The Citadel was in City 17 and that's where the Earth based Combine established their seat of power. That's where the Combine chose to establish their world connection to Earth. That's how their portal tech works. They have one lynchpin spot because they cannot teleport in universe. Only into a universe. So yes City 17 was extremely important, why do you think the G-Man put Gordon there of all places.
>>
>>738364607
What a shame....
>>
>>738371730
Because he caused and then stopped the Resonance Cascade and the Vortigaunt in particular (now allied with humans( revered him as a Christ like figure for freeing them from the Nihilanth. Breen would know that since he'd be briefed on the whole thing and knew why it happened and the scientists knew him and the Vortigaunt were being all weirdly religious with the Resistance so anyone who spoke to one sort of knew who Gordon was.
>>
>>738365957
by this logic every video game featuring some popular game mechanic/core engine feature is a tech demo.

Nobody made big deal about DA CROUBAW until HL2 told you to. Yes, people noted that it was novel that your melee weapon in HL1 was a mundane tool instead of a weapon made for killing, but nobody put it on a pedestal like it came out of God's dickhole. I'm still upset that pic related wasn't in the game.
>entire gimmick involve loading a bolt and pulling a string to reload, perfect for VR
>literally a makeshift weapon so something that could have been upgraded
>give an origin to the resistance weapon, similar to the combine AR2
>>
>>738368138
>only talks about HL2
At least apply yourself if you say 'series'.

>bought orange box
>tf2 shit from day one, went f2p a year later
At first I assumed you bought orange box in 2011 somehow but this makes it sound like you got it on release date? Which doesn't make any sense, tf2 didn't go f2p a year after release.

Yeah they did treat him like a legendary figure when he was just a scientist in power armor
However he wasn't the only one, there are numerous other scientist, at least 2 others in power armor, that tried to shut down the portals and stop Nihilith
Gordon was just the one that succeeded
I would say his legendary reputation is earned
>>
>>738368261
Metal is for construction or low tier tech. Bionic is for advanced tech. Why? Maybe it's cheaper. Maybe they don't want to risk bionics falling into rebel hands to get studied. Maybe they're doing a test run with basic human tech before creating synth apcs. PS: it looks cool and alien.
>>
>>738364376
Assuming the suit gives you super human abilities, a crowbar would genuinely be a better weapon than say a bat. Crowbars are designed to withstand great strain and bending, so if you swing one with the strength of three men, it could bash an armored man's helmet in without bending.
>>
>>738370563
They moved to the same place for the resistance and gman plopped gordon there

You're a zoomer, you've never held a baton or crowbar your entire life.
>>
When the citadel goes on full alert and all the scanner drones are flying out of it I thought it was nest birds flying out of it because it started moving until basically this year
>>
>>738376907
Gordon does swing the crowbar with one hand
I may have tried to do it a few times myself, a lot harder than Gordon makes it seem, the suit's definitely helping
>>
>>738377023
.....what would that have to do with age? in what scenario would anyone have experience holding stun batons?
>>
>>738377093
Don't feel bad, I was REALLY confused about where Half Life 2 was taking place and assumed it was the same area as HL1, just under Combine control.
When it said "Black Mesa East" I thought it was "the east part of Black Mesa". Also I thought Ravenholm was underground and was some kind of secret underground Black Mesa city.

But hey it's excusable right? I was just a kid not really, I played it when I was like 19
>>
>>738369773
they dont
combine human soldiers do
>>
They went overboard with quirky references in HL2 and episodes. I kinda hated it.

>Nevermind that a stun baton would probably be twice as useful!
Considering the amount of crates/door/plank you have to break in the game, fuck no.
>>
>>738378450
OK.
>>
>>738370195
>would you like to test this theory in a situation where the attacker isn't required by law to use restraint?
Sure.
Then you test the same but he has the crowbar.
And we let the crowd decide which one of us got it worse.
>>
>>738364376
Okay but have you considered that the crowbar can open crates and remove obstructing panels of wood? Checkmate
>>
Helloo Gordon!
>>
>>738378595
the original comment was that a stun baton supposedly wouldn't be lethal, it isn't an argument about whether or not a crowbar is lethal or more lethal
>>
>>738369152
I can kind of forgive all the shit they cut out from HL2 even if that leaves the enemy variety weak.
What I can't forgive is how lazy Episode 1 was.
They even tease the synth crabs and mortars in the citadel at the end of 2, but nothing comes of it.
Instead we get another zombie, another antlion and another strider (small).

what the fuck

they were lazy even before steam started printing infinite money
>>
>>738364376

How would a crowbar get worn?
>>
>>738364376
people really do underestimate crowbars
>>
>>738381962
when you use a tool, it wears out.
metal fatigues when it flexes.
paint chips, the surface scratches, microscopic cracks spread.
have you never used a hand tool before?
>>
>>738364376
It was kino.
I don't know a single person who was upset about it. You are a new low for /v/
>>
>>738366015
Orange Box only cost $50 :)
>>
>>738382052

Sure, and every time I use a tool and some paint gets scratched off, I have to run to the store and buy a new one, since it now entirely unusable
>>
>>738364376
Crowbar has more utility than a sun baton.
>>
>>738364587
Gordon did prove himself to be of extraordinary value.
>>
>>738364376
hl2 is an overglazed tech demo
>>
I think it makes enough sense that gordon became a legend. after all, black mesa was the biggest event other than the seven hour war, which was just humans getting raped. and remember, black mesa is massive. there would be thousands of staff up in that bitch, and a ton of them went on to be prominent in the resistance. gordon went to the fuckin alien homeworld, was there when the event was caused, saved a ton of lives, and slaughtered a bunch of spec ops marines and giant monsters.
>>
>>738382243
now imagine if instead of using the tool as intended, you were beating literally hundreds of alien creatures to death with it.
shit man, i've cracked axe heads using them as intended to split logs, and that was only pine firewood, not alien apex predators full of mechanical implants.
>>
>>738382460
and in addition, he's obviously just a figurehead, he never claims he's a big hero, he never claims anything. people need symbolism. the crowbar makes sense too.
>>
>>738364376
the stun baton is issued to him

a crow bar can be found anywhere

Half life, 2, and alyx are pretty self aware. they don't get near deadpool levels but they don't pretend to be completely serious either. Literally since 1998 its been like that.

>>

I think they were talking about the supposedly new animation system they came up with at the time.
>>
>>738382752
Huh, I just realized that Barney joke in Episode 1 about him running out of crowbars is also an allusion to Blue Shift and the way it gives you a crowbar (to make sure you don't miss it, the room is actually filled with invisible crowbars)
>>
I haven't played since the anniversary, I assume MMod and other big boy mods have been updated to keep working?
>>
>>738374951
They can always bring back those Episode 3 weapon ideas like that ice gun thing. I have a feeling the game will have gun modification options for variety. Alyx already starts the precedent after all.

uh? Most guns were innovative as fuck. Especially compared to most fps.

Tf2 near and post launch was pure kino. The free to play update (2011) ruined it though or at least marked the beginning of the end

But near vanilla tf2 when you had to pay to play was a god tier time in gaming, sorry your taste is shit man

One of the reasons I'm so salty Episode 3 was never made is because it seems like it would've been the installment in the Source engine HL games where Valve was finally going to add more stuff than the base features they were already comfortable with from HL2 to Episode 2. New weapons, new enemies, new places, the whole shebang. What a goddamn shame.
Also I'm sure the modding community would've been even more varied because at least modders can add enemies in their maps more than the same zombies, Antlions and Striders. There's only so much they can do with HL2 enemy rosters I'm afraid.
>>
>>738364587
They didn't. The only characters in HL2 who even know who Gordan is Gman and a few scientist and barney who worked with him. None of the civilians even know who Gordon is until midway through the game. By that point you've blown up Nova Prospekt and your reputation is completely earned.
>>
>>738371580
>liberated
weird I remember shotgun blasting them but I'm glad they hold no ill will
>>
>>738383960
If you consider what TF2 is doing in 2026 as being "alive" then you were never coming into this discussion honestly in the first place.
>>
HL2 is still, to this day, one of the top 10 best games ever made.
>>
>>738384228
Guys like you who don't even play the game, and haven't touched it since fucking 2010 or whatever, simply don't get an opinion. You've been whinging for a decade and a half, just kill yourself already.
>>
>>738384228
ok... Let's compare it with OG COD4, Blops, battlefield 4, etc.
>>
I am fully and completely in love with alyx vance and have been since the release day of episode 2.
>>
>psychic celestial body lightyears away possesses scientist and invents remote-apace travel on earth, allowing his malevolent alien syndicate to invade for the purposes of planetary extraction and biological assimilation
>the aliens siphon the psychic and biological energy of planets, destroys the planet, then takes the warped and mutated survivors and places them on the next target planet. Their most recent victims were the planets of the Crab Nebula, and they have recently added alien crabs to their arsenal, which are infesting and making crab-men on earth
>one syndicate member is husking out and amputating humans to make an army of remote control ventriloquist dummies
> Mutant biologically and mechanically altered chittering monster brain bug controllers
>human collaborators
>one of these non-physical entities becomes stuck on earth in the physical body he had possessed, due to his newfound drug dependency on local earth radiation, and decides to defect against the syndicate
>so he enlists a non-speaking human as his agent and begin sending him telepathic messages of resistance while also teleporting him around time and space to achieve missions against the aliens and destroy the control tower
The novel Nova Express is kino and reminds me a lot of Half Life 2
>>
>>738368138

Valve is making Half Life 2: Episode 3
It's going to be in the Half Life 2 engine, same one as episode 2. Same enemies (maybe one or two new ones) and weapons.

I would mark the year before with introduction of microtransactions and loot boxes as the thing that spelled doom. There were signs of it before but that's the moment Valve shifted gears completely, there was simply too much easy money for them and it shows in their subsequent attitude to game development
>>
>>738384929
I'd reckon Marc Laidlaw was heavily inspired by it due to his sci-fi writing background
