Why is the Halo 3 graphics or style so SOVL? Even later Halo games don't even come close to this let alone other games

I mean, Reach was pretty good, but that’s just my nostalgia talking.
But 343i games were made by people who hated Halo and went out of their way to shit on everything Bungie did.

Bungie devs were wizards

CE's assets were actually designed with static baked lighting in mind. It's visually cohesive. That's why it has aged significantly better.

Halo 2 was originally going to use a Doom 3 esque lighting system that was fully dynamic, and featured inky stencil shadows. They had to drop it midway through development, and fall back to an updated version of CE's renderer. They didn't redo the assets, so the final game just looks really flat

Halo 3, they wanted to finish everything they started with Halo 2's development from 2002 to 2007, that's 5 years, and make it as good as could be.

Reach pushed the Xbox 360 as far as it could go, hence the 20fps (Tip of the Spear, The Package, Pillar of Autumn, etc)

nobody does cool live action trailers anymore, they just pay for streamers and vtubers to shill their games instead. sucks.

Color and lighting along with cohesive aesthetics. Everything looks like Halo. Covenant, Humans, Flood, The Ark, none of it looks out of place. They also weren't trying to be hyper detailed on everything. If you look at a barrel or a grenade or a weapon up close, you can see it's not super detailed, but from a distance, everything is immediately recognizable and clear. They also kept the amount of shit littering the maps to a minimum and the things that were there were usually physics objects that you could interact with. Modern games suffer so much from visual clutter that's more times than not completely baked into the environment so it can maintain it's graphical fidelity. This is all lost technology. Devs don't know how to do any of this shit properly any more, least of all level design, which Bungie used to excel at.

Halo 3 understood that materials should just look like actual things you can reach out and touch. Lighting is also exceedingly realistic and they clearly had someone source them from real objects and track how it effected them, in ways engines couldn't do yet.

Halo 3 doesn't need shit like PBR and raytracing because it copied what those things do. It's why Halo Infinite needs max settings and raytracing just to look like it.

Did /v/ always love the Halo trilogy because I remember lots of older or "hardcore" gamers clowning on the games back in the day
>>
i think halo 3 has some soul in its art style but its not executed perfectly and for the narrative of the story i think halo 2 has a better art style. in halo 3 a lot of scenes or characters just reminded me of pixar films. some of it just has to do with the bloom and soft lighting in a lot of places. i think it looks good for the multiplayer but for the campaign story it detracted from the finale for the trilogy and took away some of the desperate atmosphere that the earlier games had. they at least looked more serious. (IMO)

halo 3 too much just looks pretty or too clean or shiny. reach fucked up though by overcorrecting way to far in the opposite direction. i would have preferred halo 3 to be somewhere half way between its own art style and reach.

it could be a lot fucking worse but i remember when i got halo 3 thinking it looks weird and too different right away the first time i played it.

everyone calling it "baby's first fps" still played it, and now 20 years later boomer shooter purists who consider Quake and Tribes the only "real" shooters are fucking dead.

everyone always wanted to fuck cortana too

I've always said this but Halo 3's art style is black magic. I mean look at that armor man, I still can't fathom it. It's so well done.
