I dislike that the main upgrade path of these games is your weapon. Unless you already know the item upgrade locations, your power level feels spikey and random and it feels like shit

Game narrative is about why the Gods all suck and should die and sorcery is the fun anti-god magic.
STR builds get free extra stats so you have points to put into INT without losing much.
Dark Sorceries do damage based on your STR/DEX stat in DS1, encouraging STR/INT builds.

that's why I always do hybrid melee/caster builds, so leveling feels more worthwhile when I hit specific stat requirements to cast certain spells, or I hit the amount of attunement slots I wanted.

I had alot of fun doing a sort of Ranger build in Dark Souls 3 with the sellsword twinblades and bow on my back. made lots of use of bombs, knives, the bow and resins.

Nah. You should only level those skills up to the soft cap (30 VIT, 40 END), then you level either STR or DEX until it reaches 40. Any extra level ups should be spent on ATN (either 16/19 ATN) for more pyromancy/spell slots, or dumped into either STR or DEX assuming your weapon scales with both to varying degrees.

Open world with "things to do" is always garbage and there are too many people who want to defend their failing franchises for anyone to unilaterally agree to that without caveats. Even if I agreed that Elden Ring is garbage, you would likely start to intercede on the behalf of some other garbage open world games.
Open world is just filler for overly dense boss rush games, traversal games and loredumps when you don't want to make an actual full game around them or throw in the towel and just organize it all into a list of things for the player to select.

the craziest thing to me is that i was watching someone else play this game and they had the souls to upgrade their weapon to +6 when they found the blacksmith but they decided to stop at +2 for no real reason and put the souls into upgrading their damage stat. like
>hmm my 12 damage sword gains 6 damage every upgrade level, i can either upgrade it 6 times or spend that monies on upgrading my damage by 5% ah yes 5% is lovely!
Its really not that hard. when you have the means to upgrade your weapon you should do that as much as you are able, its not even expensive. first upgrade spot gets regular weapon to +6. this is high enough for doing the bells and a lot of side content (including pinwheel). in order to miss the next upgrade you have to basically ignore a chest out in the open after capra demon. and yeah i know you can skip that whole area, but again. just about everything to do with the main route in the game before sens can be done with a +6 weapon. if it seems too damage spongey then go explore the area you passed through and didnt look around in. its really not that hard.

There's no consideration for gameplay:cutscene ratio, total length of the game or average cutscene duration and spacing. There also isn't a definition of cutscene, so a brief 3 second clip to show something like a door opening may be included, but a 6 minute walky talky segment might not be.
It's better to just concede that all visual media are kinematic videos, and then judge them based on how well they integrate with both game and play to determine whether those labels also apply.

I like that the main upgrade path is weapons because it lets you salvage a bad build. My first Dark Souls blind playthrough was a fucking mess but I just kept upgrading my zweihander and it balanced out my comically shitty stat spread

Also I agree that the difficulty was never the main selling point of these games for me. I think the reaction to Dark Souls is where they started to lean too hard into that with the PREPARE TO DIE THIS GAME WILL MAKE YOU BREAK YOUR CONTROLLER AND SHIT YOUR PANTS WITH RAGE stuff

Attunement was such a fucked stat in this game. Its only useful because its such a necessity for casters but the stat really should have had an overhaul in what it can do before release. Every increase should give you at least a bit of something more even if not always an extra slot for your spells and miracles. Only resistance was more fucked in this game.

The bigger critique is the way the game has 400 weapons but locks you into using only 4 per playthrough because of the materials and costs. I fully understand the point is replayability, but they're giving up WAY too much "gameplay-space" for that replayability.

If you wanted to keep the replayability an interesting design might be something like this: you can only obtain 100 of the weapons per playthrough, but you can more easily switch between any of those 100 weapons. (lower costs/materials or find them pre-upgraded)
