Superman's conceit is that he always rises to match the situation, but he doesn't turbomax everything. He's still a battery with an energy force multiplier in there, but that battery CAN run out of juice, which is why we've seen him occasionally sun dip. Going superturbomax all the time is wasteful, but also probably not great for his sanity.
