how much do you like GameBoy Advance ports of The Sims games?
>>
>>738391442
Urbz is literally the best one
>>
>>738391442
They're fantastic adventure games. I wish we got more entries.

I wonder why they never ported The Sims 1 though
>>
>>738391442
I've played Bustin' Out and it was alright. I wish it wasn't so grindy. I also wish they didn't fuck up the post-game. If you get far enough in the story, one of the townspeople becomes permanently non-conversational + there's a long annoying cutscene whenever you enter your house. It's really anoying.
>>
>>738391442
Maxis handheld games in general are severely underrated.
>>
>>738393130
they weren't handed off to a third party?
>>
>>738393130
I only know about The Sims and SimCity, were there anything else?

They did, but only in Japan. It's actually just Bustin' Out in disguise.
>>
>>738391442
I have heard they're unusually good. What's their deal?
>>
>>738393395
They're adventure games with life sim elements.

When each ports had different versions, unlike the soulless slops of today.
>>
>>738393543
Now from the perspective of time I see why that was a good thing, but back in the day I was pissed I coudn't play a game resembling for example PC version
>>
>>738393543
I love weird handheld ports that go their own way.
Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night turning into a sidescrolling metroidvania was fucking sick.
>>
>>738393385
Ah so it doesn't count
>>
>>738393543
Still can't believe we went from this variety to the last 3 or 4 games being Gears of War clones

Is there any modern equivalent to these games? Nothing gets the balance of life sim and progression the same, they all want to be farming sims that imitate Stardew

Honestly if you have to pay the furry tax to get a new game in this style I'll take it. I'll just pretend it's a Zootopia game or something

there was a simcity 3000 port to iOS forever ago that was removed, it was basically a 1:1 remake from the pc version but with a shitty mobile ui

>>738391442
I was very surprised by how good bustin out on GBA was, my expectations were low. It's weird how often it's mentioned on /v/, I didn't know a single other person who played it.
>>
>>738391442
Fun fact. Miyamoto worked on thee GBA Bustin Out and is the one responsible for the RPG elements
>>
>>738396253
this. I was fucking pissed, but usually I got over it and played whatever I had and sometimes ended up liking the game
>>
>>738396295
how come nintendo has zero rpg ips
>>
>>738393543
I never understood why this was the case. Did they just lease the IP to several different developers and have them all make their own game? I get the game being different between console and handhelds, but it had to have been cheaper to just make ports between consoles.

>what is Mario RPG
>>
>>738391442
I still have nightmares about the Sims 2 GBA characters sometimes
>>
>>738396479
Companies would just bid on IPs and they would just make what they wanted

i just don't get why miyamoto allegedly likes rpg things when he only makes baby games

[ about this much ]
Seriously though, the GBA ports of The Sims and THPS games went pretty fucking hard for a handheld that still used AA batteries

someone ported Mario 64 to GBA recently

The sims2 DS was something else, out in that desert, renovating a hotel. Haunted game.

The Urbz GBA was fantastic. The map is small when you think about it but it feels huge because of how much stuff is packed into it. The bit where you're thrown in the river and wake up in the Bayou was the best. Great soundtrack as well.

>>738393395
They're Sims RPGs with a storyline, you run around and do Sims stuff like increasing traits and getting more items for your house, but there's loads of missions and sidequests too.
>>
>>738391442
I remember playing The Sims on DS (don't know which one, it was set in a desert town and had aliens) as a kid and actually getting invested in the lore, never finished it tho
>>
>>738391442
Remember the spooky spin off for the PSP? They should have done that more.

I imagine whoever at EA managed the license was lax about it and just let anyone who offered to make a version do so, one dev did both GBC/GBA which is usually an entirely different game when it came to licensed shit anyway. But the real question is, how many kids actually noticed?

I actually just played the GBA game for the first time in like 15 years. It was a good nostalgia trip and the sound design is amusing. But when you get 2/3 of the way through the game, it falls into the same pitfall as the PC game where you have to grind relationships and skills to get any farther. House building and designing is by-and-large missing from the GBA game, so you won't have that to fall back on either.
