There was a recent thread on VNs. What are some of your favorite VNs? I'm new to the genre.
Also, I remember DDLC was all over /v/ once, but not anymore, not like KS that still gets occasional threads (mostly to talk about that /vg/ thread)
>>
>>738392149
i played the N64 port of this, pretty faithful
>>
I think the reason for that is because DDLC was made as a spiteful "subversion" of VNs, whereas KS was made out of love for VNs. Love endures for eternity, but subversion is only a product of its time.
>>
>>738392149
DDLC started the enshittification of VNs
>>
>>738392374
Was it DDLC that started this whole psychological horror trend I see on itch.io?
>>
The only VNs I remember are the big ones, like Steins Gate and Fate. I played a bunch of ecchi ones like Nekopara, but barely remember them. The Fault series is good in my opinion.
>>
i want to fuck all 4 of them

My absolute favourite is ひぐらしのなく頃に, but recommending such a title comes with several caveats.

First of all, please play in 日本語 if you can read the language. It's one of those works that really struggles in translation because the entire story only really makes sense (both literally and in terms of subtext) with a deep understanding of Japanese culture and history. If you're an otaku or a historian then you'll be fine playing in English but even then it's not the same experience.
Secondly, you have to be ok with long tangents, extensive internal narration, and bouts of repetition. It's not so much purple prose as it is pink prose, lol. All of this serves an important function but if someone didn't like it I'd 100% understand.

The first chapter is free on Steam and if you love it, you will enjoy the rest of the story. Make sure you use the original sprites in the options menu and you're good to go.

By the way, don't listen to anyone telling you to get mods to update the graphics or sound effects. In short these people have no respect for the original vision of the author.

I agree that the last two chapters are disappointing, but they're not that bad. Overall it is still a fantastic story.
Also Umineko has a completely core thesis, only the structure of the story is somewhat comparable. I'm not going into details for spoiler reasons.

If you enjoyed DDLC, play totono(picrel). It's what inspired it.

Not sure which I would consider my favourite. DDLC was fine, Totono was really interesting, but some topics it touches make me not want to put it on first place. Slay the Princess was really great, but it's western too and not your typical VN anyway. Kamidori was really fun, but mostly because of J-rpg elements. I guess if I had to pick I would choose My Girlfriend is the President as my #1 standard VN.
I really have to play more VNs.

>>738392149
>DDLC was made as a spiteful "subversion" of VNs
It's not really. It was just totono but targeted for more casual, western audience. Both were made out of admiration of the genre, targeted towards to people who enjoys VNs.

You nips should really stop confusing shortcomings for intentions. Doujin works like that rarely come off perfectly as envisioned, often simply succumb to compromises.

>DDLC was made as a spiteful "subversion" of VNs
Dan's letter at the very end totally disproves this. He loves visual novels and just wanted to make one that had a twist. I also think it will be remembered as a tentpole title that brought the idea of an AI computer character you fell in love with into the mainstream, way back in 2017 before generative AI was a thing.
In this new world of AI chatbots that grown men are falling in love with, it was clearly a forward-thinking game and everything it was afraid of came to pass. I think that makes it a really special and prophetic work. But what do I know?

>KS was made out of love for VNs
Most of the KS writers dislike VNs in general, or at least think most VNs are bad and unoriginal.

There are plenty of 'subversions' in KS, like the sex scenes being tasteful instead of eroge hentai slop and some of the routes (Emi and Hanako's routes punishing you if you try to white knight too hard, Shizune's route being more of a character study than a love story and Rin's route not providing a conventional romantic payoff). But unlike DDLC none of these feel gimmicky or like they're playing with the medium itself.
>>
>>738395246
>but targeted for more casual, western audience
That's not a good thing

DDLC was the first visual novel for many people who never played another one after DDLC

>DDLC was the first visual novel for many people who never played another one after DDLC
And there are masses of zoomers on tiktok obsessing over SubaHibi despite never even playing it, any other VN. That doesn't mean SubaHibi was made for people who don't play VNs. Braindead audience does not retroactively change the intention of the creator nor its target audience.
>>
I made what's 90% a VN. Shilled in the link below.

Ironically, if Steam did a VN Fest, I'd have to ask for an exception because there's minor gameplay that disqualifies it from meeting their definition of a visual novel.
>>
>>738402809
Even the creator didn't play many VNs, why would he make a visual novel for people who like visual novels if he doesn't even enjoy the medium? >>738402594

>>He wrote a generic note that can be summarized as "thank you for playing", that means he loves visual novels!
Yes. You claimed he doesn't like the medium. He claims otherwise. Idk why do you think I would believe you more than the guy himself, when your only argument is that his VN got mainstream appeal. So does SubaHibi in even more extreme way, so what?

How is DDLC generic?

His "claims" are worthless without proof; he's a redditor, so maybe he posted about his favorite VNs there. It's funny because he only talked about games in general in that note, not VNs.
>>
>>738392149
More of an Adventure game, but 999 and VLR are my top favorites. I loved the wild ride of Muv Luv, though it's a fucking long haul. Fata Morgana was also good, but also a long one. Though it's overhyped Steins is genuinely really good, though the sequel and most of the spinoffs suck.

There is like one example where it reassembles DDLC. This is not generic by any means. It's actually what makes it not generic in the first place.

>>738396104
That's a pretty unintelligent comparison you're making. DDLC depicts a character taking over your computer in a horror setting. That's completely different from running an ERP chatbot of your own will.

>omg it's so prophetic because the game has AI in it
Are you the same kind of person who thinks MGS2 was prophetic for "predicting" online communities? The internet wasn't invented in 2007.
>>
>>738392149
DDLC is nearing 9 years old, how often should people be talking about it?

It's important to talk about it now in retrospect, to reflect on the irreversible damage it has done on the indie scene as a whole.
