I find their packs after E2E too esoteric though. They lean much more heavily on magic over tech so you have to automate stupid magic rituals for basic components without any tools to do so.
Like imagine if, in vanilla, you couldn't just open a chest you had to put stuff into it, you had to put items into a dispenser and shoot it, one item per pulse, into the chest, and the only way to extract from a chest was a hopper. That's what it's like playing a modern enig pack.

Try Material Energy 4 and 5, they're old school CTM adventure packs that integrate with some of the tech available in modded. They even have a rudimentary story where that's completely missing in ungabungautism packs.
You will need some existing knowledge of mods, they won't hold your hand in terms of what you can do with the resources available to you. They're still a breath of fresh air compared to all the rest of the 'throw mods together' slop. I can forgive there no longer being any custom maps since mapmaking is hard and the vanilla audience is just way bigger, it's not worth doing something just for modded, but it's criminal how packs never so much as try to at least write a little bit of adventure or narrative into the quests.

I host an ATM10 server for frens. Kinda wish I had done TTS instead but everyone is 7 months in so fuck it I guess. Also the progression on some shit is straight ass. I built an entire refinery setup to make Inanite and Insanite for the turbines only to finish the Mekanism fusion reactor before it finished making enough materials for a decent turbine. Also fuck bees and mystical ag.

I blame that on how modded MC never got kind of cohesive again after 1.12. Nobody ever settled on any version because Mojang started rapid-firing updates, and the Enigmaballs guys also felt that they needed to keep up with that and started spitting out modpacks full of whatever they could find for every version.

I made the mistake of using refined at first. Luckily I got into AE2 quick enough it wasn't an issue moving everything over. As far as why ATM, everyone wanted a "dense"modpack to play. For the most part people enjoy it but it's all over the place. Thew few of us who mess with everything are flying around doing billions of damage and are almost done with the star while the majority of them are still barely figuring out importers with refined or think they are god with 100 armor.

The version I got (1.12.2 v1.1) probably wasn't the true latest that was ever available, but it's as new as I managed to dig out. hope you have better luck

90% of the time I use the Complimentary Unbound that comes with atm10, in this screenshot here. Lately I have been dabbling in IterationRP which is the screenshot with the black hole I posted earlier that does path tracing shit but looks incredible. It chugs hard and requires a pretty beefy GPU.

Agreed. Smart cables makes troubleshooting 90% of your issues easy if you can do basic math. Every once in a while I run into a bottleneck I have to solve here and there but ATM10 would be unplayable for me if I didn't use it. Also the quantum computer and assembler are nuts. Omega bee upgrades in half a second. The only bottle neck is the process machine patterns that use anything that isn't normal crafting recipes. I ended up watching a guide on how to make this monstrosity that gives you 27 thousand channels to work with. Watching an entire side of it light up when you wire it correctly is pure dopamine.

AE2 is one of the seminal mods that's affected where modded has ended up. People might reminisce about thaumcraft and buildcraft but because they didn't survive long they're only memories or at most a bit of inspiration.

It does materials super realistic, adds path tracing etc. Tinted glass will reflect but still be barely transparent as you would expect tinted glass to be. My main flaw with purpose-built factory games is that everything they add to the game is added for a single purpose. In factory, you have furnace, and that's your only way to turn ore into a plate.
In modded minecraft, because often have many different options to solve a given problem. For example, there are many options to turn ore into an ingot. Sometimes you don't even need a furnace! There are enchants that smelt the thing you break, so you put that on a pickaxe with fortune, hand it over to an autouser and now you 5x ore. Or you might bypass ore processing completely and produce a resource directly (chickens/bees/crops being the obvious one but more esoteric examples exist).
Perhaps you will argue that they all boil down to being a fancy furnace, or that the scale of a problem means, in the end, you always rely on the same fast/efficient/scalable option. It's still a form of variety that will never exist without there being multiple creative visions all being bent (via combination into a modpack) toward one task.

Latest was Skyfactory 4, against my better judgement I set up AE2 to collect and forward process some automatic resource production. It worked at first but the import or export buses would just randomly stop working and the only way to get them working again was to break them and place them again, only for them to stop working again soon. Wasn't a chunkload issue, either.

Earlier in a TOYMY the cells I'd place in the drives would just not register for the system so I couldn't get it working at all.

Just certain area in the overworld chug hard like my buddies base which has 800 light sources and it all over the place. The end runs 120+, Nether 120+. It recommends a 3070 for the pack. Fucking hate the "Terraria but shit" sloppacks featuring Cataclysm.
Recently was roped into playing a memeversion pack like that because my friends wanted to "try something different" (even though one of them literally nope'd out the main focus of the pack one or two days into the pack and did nothing but Create, but I digress) and Goety The Dark Arts genuinely caught my eye as a promising mod with decent replayability and a variety of things to do.
But it just could not keep up with the retarded power creep the modpack was designed around so all the shit I summoned did little other than be small distractions even against common overworld mobs. Oh you trained like 500 undead minions, you gave them cutting edge armor? Cool, they're still fucking stupid so they charge at the boss regardless of mechanics, the Cataclysm boss stomps his foot and now they're all dead, instantly. Fuck you. So I had to drop it for the usual bow & sword shit. I'm pretty sure Goety was in the pack just for extra shit to fight because they didn't even bother giving it a questline. I'll have to make a TOYMY modpack at some point to experience it properly.

He also burns out again soon later (leaving the mod in an incomplete state) and hands it to some fucks who never showed interest in it.

I've been playing Cobbleverse and its a better pokemon game than any of the official games released in the last 15 years

I've also been playing enigmatica 2 expert and its a lot of fun, but I guess i'm too retarded to figure out parts of it. People say you should be automating but I never really know what they mean by that, sorting items into chests? Automate resource gathering? I don't really know how to go about doing any of that either. The tech aspect of it is super cool and I'd love to actually get into it, but its fucking overwhelming, I just end up building pretty houses instead

I try modpacks out once in a while but none capture the way I felt playing tekkit back in the day. I loved the machines, the progression, the huge pipes you had to build to transport items, the energy management and generators, the large mechanical quarries you'd build that destroy one block at a time going downwards.
Nowadays I launch a pack and the first thing it has me do is build that stupid storage mod that trivializes storage and transport, it always has some dumb shit you have to collect from another dimension (FUCK OTHER DIMENSIONS!!) and it's always tinkers construct which is tedious as fuck
Why is there nothing that captures the feel of machines and tech that early modpacks had? I'm glad Create exists but that shit is not the same vibe at all and I hate having to use it

Being a magic mod fan is endless misery. All the good mods get abandoned. Thaumcraft, Witchery. All the promising new ones implement a handful of features or are shallow as hell and then get abandoned or stuck in glacial development hell. Hexerei, Eidolon, Roots, Malum. And don't forget the one-version heroes that are exclusive to one version and then disappear off the face of the earth. Fucking Astral Sorcery.
And you can't even use KubeJS to stitch them together into something vaguely resembling a sensible progression path because they all have different themes to them.
But at least this tech mod wearing a flowery magic skinsuit is in every goddamn version under the sun! Fucking end me.

At least we'll always have Blood Magic so when we slit our wrists we can make something useful out of it h-haha...

ars nouveau is a good foundational mod that has been around for a while and allows you to automate shit in a magical way that actually feels magical, maybe even more so than thaumcraft
mana and artifice has EXTREMELY rough around the edges models for modern standards, but is still a solid successor to ars magicka
iron's spells has next to zero use outside of combat but it feels surprisingly stable and solid considering all the wacky stuff some spells do, plus it opens up different playstyles, not just from magic damage but healing and buff spells
goety the dark arts has a decent suite of content from structures to explore, to spells and even trainable minions, and looks very promising considering how new it is. it also fits the game because most stuff is inspired/lifted by the Dungeons spinoff game
