As a califag that actually went there many times, you could walk up to the "bar " and request any PS1 and later PS2 game to play for free for as long as you wanted. There was also another floor with a massive arcade as well as a Microsoft store with a dedicated PC gaming area and you could play Mechwarrior 3 among other things

So yes, it was peak gaming

Simply put, it was an era where both sides of the business were running at max capacity. You cannot overstate the growth the industry saw during this time. The business’ were really good at making money back then, so that meant the developers got a lot to make their games, but not so much that everyone got a blank check and the scope would creep until the game was shelved. People back then in the industry had one singular almost supernaturally-possessed drive shared unanimously across the industry, and that was to create, because the tools had never been so powerful, so plentiful, and also painful (Looking at you PS2). They wanted to MAKE SOMETHING so BADLY they NEEDED TO MAKE THINGS. It was like God came down from heaven. This was the last true era of growth without convoluted stock fuckery.

This is not just a gaming thing, this was pretty much all public spaces were maxed for entertainment and spectacle. It was an era where people genuinely tried to make their places look fun and exciting. It's weird to everyone in 2026 since now all businesses are made to look like a boring bland coffee shop.

McDonalds and other fast food restaurants also tried extra hard to look interesting for kids.
Stores went much harder on the look of the place to have big flashy signs, overly decorated walls and displays, playable demos, listen stations, and they ornately designed the desks and counters.

Everything today looks like a bus station with plain walls and cheap seats.

I think the tipping point for this was Xbox Live party chats and its a double-edged sword for me. On one hand, XBL party chats I firmly believe directly contributed in keeping my main friend circle, whom I consider my brothers beyond blood together for over 15 years now, but at the same time, I only met those friends through public 2fort lobbies on the Xbox version of TF2. I don't think the conditions to meet the people who will be the best men at my wedding would have existed if TF2 did not release before Xbox party chats.

I truly pity later generations who have not had such organic opportunities to meet and bond with people who can help one another grow into better people. It genuinely makes me sad to see what happened and I hope we as a society can find a solution to claw some of that back.

It's why I support proximity chat in games, by making the very act of speaking publicly in-game an active part of gameplay by creating scenarios where your own self-expression can enhance the play experience I think is a perfect way to get people talking organically with other people and I hope it helps people find friend groups like how I found mine.

They design the bottom because the older property owners demand their buildings to be intentionally bland and generic so it could fit the mold and layout of various different franchises in case one shuts down to be replaced by another.

A McDonalds today is not built to be a McDonalds, it's build to be a modern McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Burger King, and Panda Express all at the same time. Nothing is built with the intention of any roots because they treat the brands as disposable and the owners responsible feel zero obligation to directly invest and enhance their local communities because they are granted to exclusive privilege to live as effectively global citizens with no regard for their fellow citizens they are supposed to be united with under the flag of the nation they're supposed to support and represent. Notice how we stopped seeing rich people do shit like build libraries, museums, or stadiums in their name in their neighborhoods? They didn't do it back then only out of kindness in their heart, they lived like regular citizens and as a result wanted to help make sure that the cities and neighborhoods they lived in weren't shitholes.

Organizing my original group is a hellhole even for a casual get-togethers like going to a bar for a drink or two.

I have heard it has more to do with the property being more valuable than the franchise. So it needs to be as neutral as possible so that the company can repackage or resell that property as easily as possible.

Naw. Notice the big increase starting around 2013? That's when people started using the word "incel." If you look up statistics broken down by demographics, you'll see it's incredibly disingenuous to say "teen and young adult suicides." It's teen and young adult MALES exclusively that are on the rise. Women aren't killing themselves more. It's also mostly white men who are killing themselves more.

Obviously this doesn't exactly support certain political narratives which are used to give preferential treatment to certain groups of people, so of course you're never going to hear about it in the media.

I'd personally argue that by 1994, the internet has become viable and spread to middle-class households and not just companies.
It early internet was a new wild west and being talking to others anywhere from anywhere did wonders to loneliness until it got massively adapted by the mainstream and commercialized beyond recognition.
I personally draw the line at the death of flash.

You know, I asked my mom out of curiosity the other day. She is quite the worrywart even though I'm an adult, have lived alone for a while now.
I asked whether she was also worried as often as she is about me before I got my mobile phone (before it was a thing with kids) and she just sat there for a good five minutes and said
>no, you know I actually didn't, I just accepted that I can't reach you anyways so you'll be home before dark or if there's trouble you'll call via public phones or one of your friends would call me
I think that for her, the idea that she can reach me whenever opened some sort of a floodgate with her.

> OP is vague posting again as bait
> sucks a rage baiting.
The pic rel is of the Playstation Store, the one and only, that Sony opened at the Sony Metreon in 1999 in San Francisco (search for it). When I went there a few times it was, in its entirety, a marketing operation via retail pretense. With using architecture similar to that of Dan Weil ("The Fifth Element") using architecture cues straight out of a comic by French comic authors Jean-Claude Mézières and Jean Giraud. So the reason that this was "thought" to be peak gaming was merely because this was at a time when the industry, as an industry, without needing to ask permissions to some government attached commissar or some internal focus groups, went all out in order to do marketing and flex run just about around when the Playstation 2 launched.
This was something memory making that to this day, despite my reservations about the store itself for what it was along with the rest of the complex at the time, that proves that the industry today is total shadow of what it once was. Full stop.
Again the entire experience - if you want to know what this store was like, you just have to go to any Apple store today - any single one - and it would be the exact same experience: it's part showcase, part store, all marketing.
An aside: I sometimes notice that Zoomers copycat their Gen X parents who like to pretend to be "above it all" anything that is sincerely appreciated by people that were more fortunate to have nice things; Gen X did it to Baby Boomers and now Zoomers do it to Millennials. Monkey see, monkey do.

>>
>>738406636
Anon, you have to get out of this mindset of permissions.
There's too much of this idea (even this entire website has fallen for it)
where you have this idea of "I'm not allowed by public opinion to like something"
you can like something regardless of what someone thinks or says.
Case in point: I like SOTN not because it's popular, I like SOTN, because it was a
fun game, with lots of memories attached to the experiences when I first played it
the first two, three times earlier in my life.
OP is just doing this ragebait thing of dismissing things that were once
there that people had the chance to experience that they never will.
But I often think to myself, in the case of the Playstation store, I was there,
many times, and knew that it was neat, but it wasn't as much what it was cracked
to be, but it was nice to have around at the time.
But the very fact that I could recall and give some celebration to such things of my time,
of my youth, has to be "allowed" or not is so stupid as it is an attempt to make you
self-censor yourself from within your own thoughts using perceived (The Internet Is Not Real Life™) electronic social peer pressure as a way of social engineering and training you to think in terms of allowance or disallowance.
It's why I think this board is a joke now. But hey, Zoomers are going to Gen X.

I remember. I used to live near San Francisco. The Sony store at the bottom of the Metreon where you could sit at the bar and play any PS1/2 game as long as you want. The side theater that they put the PS3 in, where I played Killzone 2 on a huge screen and it blew my mind. On the second floor next to the movie theater was Tilt, a massive arcade. Next to that was a Games Workshop with Warhammer figures. On the top floor was a massive Where The Wild Things Are area that I had like 3 birthdays at.

What’s weird is all the hobbies I loved as a kid are now objectively more popular than ever, but these places all got lost. The building is just a big Target now. How is that that possible? Shouldn’t these spots be more in demand than ever?

I have a wife and 2 kids now. I’m in my 30’s. What the fuck.

They tend to not be all that profitable, especially with the insane costs of rent now. Now add into the mix the growing elements of low trust society and the costs to maintain such places explode. Even if it were expected to operate at a loss, there aren't enough wealthy people willing to subsidize the fond memories of future generations.

I’ve seen more than a few comments online and on reddit about how teachers are struggling to deal with the severe attention deficit among current younger generations
due to their use of phones from a very early age, especially watching reels
Their attention span is significantly shorter, so teachers need to find ways to reward them with small incentives
The average attention span of a young person today before they become completely distracted is 1 to 3 minutes

LED lights are far more efficient, they use about 1/8 the power of incandescent while putting out more light.

More recently though there's been even further advancements in the way LED bulbs actually look, some coming very close to the old incandescents, so you can still achieve the old look. however the establishment in question has to 1. know the option exists and 2. not be cheap asses
>>
>>738393514
Yes roughly that time. 6th gen years was good too. 7th gen was where it all fell apart and everything stopped being exciting. It was this short duration of years that everything good happened in. Where you would walk into a store and there was always a game that would have been a wise decision to purchase. Or if you didn't want to buy it you were probably unaware that it was likely good anyway.
All i do is play games from this era. 'New bad old good' is practically truthful in saying because the industry sucks shit now. They don't make anything i want to play anymore.

The time that malls were built with the assumption that families would come and spend all day there so they were built to be comfortable and entertaining was too good.

Unless you are actively using any electronics when it happens you're fine. Only people who got injured are those who used the telegraph systems or were really close to a utility pole at the time in 1859 (death or burns of varying degrees).
Well, when it happens it would likely cause world-wide panic nowadays so you're most likely to be harmed due to a mob of people rather than the storm itself if you'd ask me.
>>
>>738418792
samefag here.
I meant to say that it was Sony's time to flex around and market when they opened the Playstation store along with the Sony Metreon complex.
But the industry itself, was also doing flexes here and there in their own ways so this was an emblematic moment in the industry where things were good, strong, and seemingly unending because there was a lot of money going into Sony's Playstation division's coffers.
>>738426976
Yeah I have come down to, I think since 2018, to a point where I really seldom like a new game - I think I was recommended "Divine Frequency" when it was a Doom mod and then later I bought the game proper when it came out. But I usually play old games - I even built two MiSTer FPGA consoles just to play old stuff when I can't use software emulators. Because to me, sure you can say "old man ramble", but I don't like the outright theft in the industry: if it's not hearing stories of government subsidized games like "Dustborne" to consultation firms from Canada or Canadians mucking up a game, it's always something. You can't trust streamers, you can't trust Youtubers, you can't trust even very board (of course who would? Who ever did?) so you go with what you know and only consider opinions of people who are serious about video games.
And you save money too! That's a real benefit and additional source to peace of mind.

There's something about all the nonsense plastic displays and entire expos that were purpose built just for one use that just really tickle the soul. Sure, they were commissioned by enormous corporations to tune into the *WHOA RADICAL* youth but the people they contracted out really seemed to get at the heart of what made the products exciting in the first place. That's what's missing not only in gaming, but any marketing franchise. It's either corporations don't want to invest in the aesthetic of their product or brand that heavily, or they don't understand what makes it appealing in the first place.

it's not only attention deficit which has caused even the highest level of successful students to struggle with simple tasks previous generations were expected to do without just checking out mentally, it's that students literally don't give a shit and there's honestly no easy way to fix it. if i was in school post covid i'd be fucked entirely, i would just use an LLM to think for me and call it a day any time i experienced any amount of friction. this total lack of friction causes your ability to cope with any problems in life to atrophy setting you up for a life of failure, anxiety, stress, and depression.

Had a friend do that to me, and I said the same thing. Funny enough, one day many years later, he was sitting down and I was standing up, and I was like "Oh, hey, you got a baldspot." Guy went FULL denial about it for a month until I finally took a picture of it. He denied it still, but then like a week later he started to wear a hat around and never took the thing off lol. The crazy part is that his hair was still full and thick and he was pretty tall. You could ONLY see it from the top, yet he just went basically mental when I pointed out a spot that was MAYBE the size of a dime.

Black people didn't, and still don't play video games. Women didn't, and still don't play video games. Black women despite making up 7% of the population make up 49% of the morbidly obese. White Americans actually have a lower obesity rate than the Finnish.

86% of Black Women are obese while only 24% of gamers who play more than 10 hours a week are obese. Gamers who play less than 10 hours a week are actually more athletic than the general population with 95% of them at a healthy weight.

94-2001 is probably explainable as the people being the most prone to suicide and isolation (nerds) found a massive amount of community and purpose on the early internet. Interestingly, 9/11 actually caused more unification and social cohesion (shared enemy) and the trend continued downward. 2003 is when all the political faggotry and divisiveness started with the Iraq War so that might explain the unusual spike there.
And then rather obviously in 2008 and onward begins with the recession, Obama era race politics and the rise of social media

I don't really understand how the internet rapes attention span more than Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network
>>
>>738436650
Sitting down for 22 minutes to follow a narrative, even one full of constant animation and little jokes, takes a lot more concentration than clicking through an Ipad every 30 seconds, reading propaganda from every psychotic billionaire and third world government in existence with no understanding of the context for any of it, while talking to mentally ill freaks, furries, neo nazis, Jews, degenerates etc. and posting brain rot memes.
>>
>>738436432
Piracy doesn't count.
>>
>>738436650
Really? It's pretty obvious when you think about it. On top of what the other anon said about following a straight-forward narrative for 22 minutes, phone content is refined and designed to bombard you with the reward every 20-30 seconds, as opposed to a cartoon making a joke every 3-5 minutes + many of the jokes requiring you to pay attention to the full content of the entire episode to truly get. That plus you don't really get to control the content on CN or Nick. You might get 30 minutes for your favorite show, but then it moves onto the next show and it's a rerun of a mid-to-trash show that you hate, meaning you now lost interest and have to do something else for the next 30 minutes. Even if you flipped through channels back in the day and went channel surfing, you weren't liable to find something even remotely decent even if you sat there for a good 25 minutes doing it, and by then you might wind up turning off the TV.

Cable TV had pockets of enforced delayed gratification. Mobile shit is engineered to hit you with gratification in a steady stream.

There is a silver lining. Tech oligarchs are accruing too much power at a time of massive societal change.

During the first industrial revolution all the robber barons got together and realized that they are going to get french revolutioned if they dont do anything so they privately built massive public works from universities to libraries to parks.

This new gen of tech oligarchs didnt learn their lesson and are busy being atomized psychopaths. They are going to get literally eaten in a decade or so. Its unironically inevitable.

Things that tickle your soul are confusing and meaningless to the average consumer (read: the retards that shop at Target). That's why 2026 design is Apple Store grey with slightly greyer rectangles everywhere.

Yeah, you could make your storefront memorable and delight maybe the top 20% of your customers, but in actuality for 80% of the people you just made background noise that may as well be a fucking Applebee's wall covered in garbage. Marketing research says aesthetics don't matter to the majority of troglodytes with a pocket full of cash.

Sadly though, you are neither interesting or charismatic, since the only feeling I have thus far from your conversation is me wanting to blow my brain out with a shotgun, since you post the most uninteresting and vain dribble, dunno if you're compensating for anything or if you're just underage, and haven't realised yet that actual relationships go beyond just looks. You're not starting a family with someone who cares how tight your hairline is, or how "lookmaxxed" you are, because they are the first ones to jump ship when you are falling behind anyone else.

Families you start with ones who care beyond the superficial layer, share your hobbies, your interests, have personality, and are funny, you know, the whole thing that keeps the romantic layer together. Looks are a bonus, no one wants a literal 1/10, but those rarely are common anyhow nowadays, but given you already associate all those qualities with just "looks" you genuinely are fucked and I can only hope for you that you grow up beyond those thoughts as you get older.

>inb4 ur bald/don't have relationship

They weren't that large. Most likely just some journo fluff. A real one would cause some terrifying damage. A good bit of modernized stuff might survive, but a large chunk of the world hasn't been able to afford to upgrade everything they've got. The biggest problem is gonna be the slowdown or sometimes outright collapse of supply chains. It'll look like one's limbs while they're undergoing hypothermia.
>>
>>738433106
It's the transition of balding that tends to look worse than either end of it. Granted, you can still make it work if you rock whatever you've got with confidence. Some people get too fixated on min/maxing that they forget to actually play the game.

Okay brother, what I am trying to say is that Hair matters fuck all, and that's coming from me who has hair, I could shave my self bald, and be reassured that every other trait I have outweighs the hair I have on my scalp, furthermore there are about a thousand things more important in a lasting relationship then your hairline. It matters in the same way basic hygiene does, if hair was the defining factor in getting laid/not, then the bald gene wouldn't spread would it? Hair matters only in the context of when you have nothing else to fill that gap. If you have absolutely nothing else going besides your looks, then yes, cutting out the hair part, is about 40% of your "personality" gone.
