If you go to any rulebook or writing before then any member of the AM is referred to explicitly as he/she.. sometimes GW forgets and you have binary-gendered representation like Hadron, Koriel from Mechanicus (tho she's an odd one), Tychon in the FoM series (retains gender distinction and works with her biological family).. tons more than those 3 but those are the ones that naturally come off the top of my head. All are referred to as female in natural conversation and in Hadron's case she keeps a female voice despite possessing the ability to move past that and be a NB for representation's sake. So yeah, it's not as egregious as "UM, NO THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FEMALE CUSTODES ACKSHULLY CHUDS" this one is more or less passed over because it's a common theme in robotics or artificial intelligence to disembody gender and 'advance' to another state of being entirely.
