Any games with an unreliable narrator? Why is this literary device only used in movies and books?
>>
Heavy Rain
>>
The Stanley Parable.
>>
That one mission of Battlefield 1
>>
...DARK SOULS

Wasn't this the explanation the guy behind YIIK adopted when people started saying the story made no sense

>Why is this literary device only used in movies and books?

Not really a "narrator" but the first Nier game / remake Nier Replicant.

is there a more hack trope than the unreliable narrator?
>tee hee who knows what really happened :)
>>
>>738432517
>there are parts where you play as the killer
>there are parts where you play as the killer and have access to their inner thoughts
>their inner thoughts are not "I'M THE FUCKING KILLER"
heavy rain is worse than an unreliable narrator
>>
>>738432445
Well it's a spoiler to name any of them.
Deadly Premonition.
>>
>>738432445
It's because "narrator" as a role in videogames is not as necessary as it is in literature. In movies and games it's the "viewpoint character"
MGSV Venom is an unreliable protagonist, he is constantly hallucinating all kinds of goofy shit
>>
>>738433081
it's not hacky, it's extremely basic and there have been countless good and bad uses of it
>>
does Heavy Rain count?
>>
>Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
>Player fucks up and dies
>Prince narrates, "I must be misremembering something"
>>
>>738432445
Afraid of Monsters
>>
>>738432445
spec ops the line
>>
>>738432445

there's a plethora of VNs and rpg maker games doing this shit. lmao fucking posers who don't know anything about the genre trying to appear cultured

VNs and RPGMaker slop aren't games, though.
>>
>>738433301
i find it hacky because it allows you to handwave away half the problems in your story
>>
>>738432792
he's unreliable AND unreasonable.
>>
>>738432445
Cyberpunk 2077. All of Johnny's flashbacks are mostly bullshit.
>>
>>738432445
Yeah OP, PoP: Sands of Time. Every time you die, Prince goes 'Oh actually, it didn't happen like that, here's what REALLY happened'.

Git gud.

Just from glancing at my library
MGSV
>brain injury causes Venom to hallucinate some elements but it's a curated, important part of the narrative
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
>Ichiban is schizophrenic, hallucinating various comedic elements and leading to gameplay scenarios
Disco Elysium
>Harry is a brain damaged, drug addled schizophrenic who hallucinates primarily narration from his fragmented psyche, leading to worldbuilding and gameplay elements

And actually all of the party characters in FFVIII have amnesia, which is central to the plot of the game. Lots of other games with amnesia as a theme which is one of the main kinds of unreliable narrator.

>And actually all of the party characters in FFVIII have amnesia
You could also say the same with schizo Cloud in FF7.
