>Is supposedly the direct cause of all the random live service deaths that Sony foolishly went after simply because they were competition or just poorly advising them.
I don't care about this at all since live service as a model is mostly cancer but it's still something they did and a lot of company time and money was spent on this. So many dev studios had their games die before even being announced.
>Made a sequel to a singleplayer game and had no singleplayer in it at all.
>Destiny players vehemently despise them for how poorly they've handled Destiny as a whole.
>In general have bad design philosophies like "Do the bare minimum, charge the maximum" that they openly voice.
>The art theft because one of their artists was lazy.
It's a whole host of things. I personally believed Marathon would underperform which I was proven right on. Destiny players were already leaving in droves, there's no singleplayer, the genre was niche, it doesn't look great, it's PVP only, and it's way too sweaty. It being a success would have taken a miracle.

Marathon/Bungie/Sony somehow managed to anger very large groups of people in the recent years:

I hope bungie lives for one more game because I am genuinely curious as to what it'll be like after they spent the last 6 years slowly but surely purging the staff.
Marathon at least had some legacy work by people not there anymore, anything new now is going to be by the newbies and yesmen that were left behind.
>>

It was probably like how Doom 4 was technically in development for 9 years. Lots of spitballing and systems demos but nothing cohesive and a couple of project restarts along the way before they finally settled on something that became the finished product.
>>
Never forget that Sony spent 3.6 BILLION for Bungie because they thought live service was the future so they wanted someone good at it to manage their 10+ live service games.

For comparison Disney spent 4 billion for star wars.
>>
>>738440232
The push to premium pricing for games and consoles came at an incredibly poorly timed moment with the COVID econom, and it only became a harder ask for customers to buy into the new prices with the tariffs raping the economy even further. But these companies are dug into their business plans and refuse to budge; Nintendo are the only ones showing any signs of trying to adjust to the market with upcoming games being below the new standard pricing and even then you know those bitches are also going right back to $70-80 again when they've got a new mainline Zelda/Mario to show off.

Bungie directly was involved with Concord lol, they gave consulting and some devs helped. They also told Naughty Dog that TLOU Factions would fail and scared them away. Then, they convinced Sony that $300M on their new game was going to be worth it.
Sony is absolutely seething at them. The $3.6B was a panic purchase but they had coped that with their live service push, Bungie would be instrumental for consulting. Instead, everything they touch has turned to shit. Whoever negotiated that deal for Bungie ran off like an absolute chad thief. $800M written off already and it’s not really going to improve anytime soon.

This one is a rare bungie correct call.
Factions 1 was niche and not a huge draw despite being pretty good. 2's multi would never have been the money printer Sony wanted and ironically Bungie would go on to do the same fuck up of trying to make a mass market appeal niche game that they spared Naughty Dog from.

> If circumstances change going forward, we plan to manage the impact on profitability by flexibly adjusting, among other things, unit sales and promotional plans in our studio business. Earnings from Bungie's title portfolio did not reach our expectations. So we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie, except for goodwill.
>Player receptions to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82, and more than 90% of the player reviews on steam being positive. Engagement metrics, such as retention, also remain at a high level. Going forward, we aim to improve the performance of the game by working to retain highly engaged core users through the introduction of additional content. Further improvements in the gameplay experience and expansion of the user base.
From the earnings call. Marathon is here to stay.

bungie has people whose job it is to know whats going to sell to the general public, so why aren't they making games that are marketable to the wider market, and furthermore why are the investors ok with their money being used for activist pet projects and not to make a product with the intention to turn a profit and a return for their investment overhead? i want answers to this question on behalf of those investors? is their money just being stolen, and what is the legal justification for operating a business in the united states this way when they are contractually obligated to profit seek? i mean if you have questions for me, i have plenty for you.

Even if the game did super duper shit it's still be supported for at least another 8 month since bungie has not exactly been keeping it a secret that the first year of "content" has already been paid for.

More maps on the Marathon ship, more story contracts (Arachne has fucking none) and character customisation. Make it happen immediately. And more raid bosses, add some pfhor, some bigger UESC robots, more mutated animals.

not an answer, bungie is a company that is beholden to their investors and are LEGALLY OBLIGATED to serve those investors who are expecting a marketable product to get a decent return obviously bungie knew beforehand this wasn't going to do well, so my question stands, what is the legal justification for bungie operating their business with activist projects at the forefront of their business?

They aren’t technically lying since this was made based off of the state of the game on Mar 31. Obviously since then retention has been a massive problem and Steam score has dipped. They have tried putting it on sale once already and it didn’t seem to do much. I wonder how long of a leash they’ll give to Bungie with this game - if it were up to me, I’d be gearing them up to fully focus on D3 and leave a skeleton crew on Marathon. That’s not what they’re doing though.
>>
>>738440941
>Were Bungie really making a Marathon game from the start?
Yes. Bungie has been spitballing a Marathon reboot for a decade now. It was also Tarkovish but closer to DayZ with way bigger maps. It was the pet project of Chris Barrett for years of preproduction but he got fired and Bungie brought Ziegler as the new lead which is why he injected Valorant DNA, with classes and match timers.
And as a sequel-reboot-expansion on the world, if you actually played it and did the quests and hunted for logs, it is very good at it. It's not just derivative memberberries and adds enough new interesting actors and detail to the setting.

I hate when people compare Sony's decision making process to gambling. Employing several different teams of untalented political hires who hate your primary customer base and lack respect for the industry that they're working in to create some of the most expensive projects in the history of the industry isn't "rolling the dice". That's like saying that driving a motorcycle off a cliff is a "gamble" because there's a tiny chance that you might be fine. They've gone beyond failing at the fundamentals and into the realm of lacking basic common sense.

Any Sony executive who had more faith in Marathon and Concord than Helldivers and Stellar Blade needs to be blacklisted from the industry, and I'm not being hyperbolic. That demonstrates that they're either completely clueless about what their priorities should be or they're bad actors. This is a different company, but if you're working on a team shooter, you should be able to explain why the Highguard trailer evoked that reaction and then why players who played it didn't like it. I think that it's a good measuring stick because unlike Concord and Marathon, the problems aren't so obvious that even your mom who doesn't care about videogames could tell that it won't sell (which still makes her more qualified than the executives who unironically thought that Concord was going to be a multi-billion dollar franchise).

>>
>>738454836
Not really. The first big burst of players on release is the attracting players period. Now it's better to KEEP those who remain since they are the driving marketing/ad force and they do it for (((free))).
Any more big influxes of players is down to happy accidents or a positively received content drop driving interest again.
That said unless they introduce something to mix it up they won't be retaining very much since at this point anyone who has sunk time into it has probably seen it has to offer so it's down to simple enjoyment of the game and that is a factor you cannot plan for.
They will probably still dump it after a year tho lmao

Sony deserves it for being so retarded. Imagine all the actual good ips they could have gotten, and games they could have funded, with 4 billion dollars. Instead they wasted it all on simply acquiring a group of has beens who had done nothing but barely support a failing live service game for the past decade.

I suppose in the way that nobody is buying the game, but if you mean that people will actually buy woke slop it's never happened. The only woke game that didn't totally flop was BG3, and they sold the game for several years, then patched in woke stuff later, which I guess is a way to have your woke game not flop, but it only works once.

Nobody is buying the game or talking about it anymore, which means nobody has friends picking it up and telling them to join.
The world at large has decided it's a dead game and a waste of $40 to try and get in, and nothing they add to it can change this fact.
The most they can hope for is 10-20k tourists if they go f2p, and even then, due to nobody knowing anyone who plays, people won't even have a reason to download it.

That said, I hope Snoy keeps pouring millions into this waste of space for another year.

Low level insider here believe me or not it will probably be revealed partly from someone in due time.
Bungie tried to hire him on as a full time project consultant after PLAGIARISM WILL MAKE ME GOD incident but he refused since it would mean leaving his job as an executive at the hooded horse publisher and bungie was offering shit pay and hours in comparison This is also why he hasn't made a video on it compared to when he's made videos for new games in series entries he's done before because he's an autist who probably considers getting an offer conflict of interest. I heard doomerism about this falling through since some employees had ONLY been exposed to the game through those videos since they didn't bother to play alephone and only a handful tried it after the steam release.

So let's say the revenue was $65m and budget $300m, it peaked at 88k and settled at ~15k. >>738438634
>why is /v/ so obsessed with its failure
Because Bungie enshittified their own games, alienated their community, and created the toxic and predatory GAAS trend to begin with. Then they raided their IP vault to defecate all over a memory of a different time and a different studio. And that's not discussing the absolute shitshow of their management and their former CEO jumping ship with a golden parachute after tricking Sony.

They bought every bit of hatred they get with their actions, this is just their old fanbase coming home to roost over what they did to Destiny.
>>
>>738438634
For me, it’s:
>Bungie acting like smug cunts to their playerbase as far back as Halo
>deleting paid destiny content
>frequently lying about any given thing
>art theft
>fellating themselves over political causes (e.g. trans at Bungie)
>management more concerned with its car collection than employees
>firing Marty
>turning Destiny into a streamer bait game
>marathon fans/shills acting generally obnoxious as hell the past 2 months
I think that about covers it.
>>
>>738464468
i like the intro and the warframe style faction cinematics so they could remake it into a singleplayer story that can actually make use of those world class VA that they hired but the entire game needs to be redone, the art needs to be redone, models, the world as a whole needs to look different, UESC should be your employers
so if sony wants to blow another 560 million on that, it could be a decent enough game but there is no way they will ever make their money back

The problem is that there are maybe a thousand people globally that care about the Marathon story, including the people that created it, and most of tthem will be more annoyed by the retcons. This is a concept called 'Schadenfreude' that basically means 'laughing at the misfortune of others.' This does not mean you cause the misfortune someone is experiencing, but you're just laughing at it. Think of it like seeing a guy sneeze while holding a milkshake and the arm movement accidentally causing it to splash on his face. You didn't make that happen, but you might still chuckle at it.

That's what's happening here. /v/ has always loved laughing at flops, particularly when they're the result of intense hubris or stupidity.
