Anything beyond that is simply boring because your team is not getting anything new. I got as far as Koga and stopped playing. Its just not a good feeling pokemon game. Red and Blue had this feel to its gameplay. Leaf Green feels strangely slow and clunky in a way the advance games did specifically. R/B is a buggy old mess but it feels good to move around in. Cross-game connectivity is the biggest factor for me when it comes to Pokemon reproductions, my "actual copies" of the Gen 1/2 games that I play are all reproduction cartridges that use flash memory for the saves instead of battery backed SRAM, with the Gen 2 games also having a slotted battery compartment to keep the RTC functioning. Still works with Mystery Gift, with Stadium 2 transfers, etc. Shit's great.

My biggest gripe is that most of the Gen 3 repros AREN'T that. They're chink bootlegs using a modified version of the Gen 3 games that corrupt as soon as the game writes to the HoF data.

It's clear live service has an upper limit and game freak is already strained as fuck making regular games. Meanwhile every Switch generation flagship title has sold well over 20 million copies when pokemon games would max out at like 15 million beforehand.
It's far more lucrative and in Pokemon's interest to just do generations with one big game and a bunch of spinoffs and legacy ports/remakes in the intervening years. It lets the franchise not feel oversaturated but still lets them do inexpensive projects to keep the IP rolling.
