Honest thoughts on Demon's Souls 16 years later?you have to give From major props for creating Demon Souls because they nailed pretty much everything on the first try. All the Souls sequels have added almost nothing to the original Demon Souls in terms of the game framework
DS3 was my introduction to these games (like most people except they lie about it) and I love Demon’s Souls. It was kind of baffling to me playing it after playing all the other games and thinking “why the hell is this feature only in demon’s souls?” like character tendency and soul form. Shrine of Storms is my favorite area just because of the atmosphere.
>>738448716>Shrine of Storms is my favorite area just because of the atmosphereAbsolutely based. Everyone jerks off Latria, but 4-X hits so different. And it's underrated how well crafted 4-2 is as an area.
It's a serviceable prototype for the souls games that came after it but by itself it's kinda lacking
Shrine of Storms>A pagan tribe built a temple to the dead on top of a hill located on a small island>The whole hill is hollowed out and full of catacombs and shrines>Traditionally, a funeral procession would start at the top of the hill, then the body gets carried down the tunnels, passing a series of religious rituals>All the pagans died out a long time ago and the island was abandoned, but the influence of the colourless fog ressurected all the dead bodies in the shrine and manifested the deities and mythical beings from pagan beliefs in physical forms>Some of those beings are the Adjucicator, who acted as a "judge of the dead" figure in their mythos or the Storm King, which was the god of tempestStonefang>A huge underground mining/industrial city partially built undeground>Technically subject to Boletaria>As the miners dug deeper, they eventually reached an underground lava lake and a huge ancient temple with a chained dragon inside>Some of the miners began worshipping this being, forming a cult>There is also something about the blacksmith twins and their supposed conncection to the Flamelurker, but I'm unsure what's that really aboutBoletaria>Capital of a kingdom>Its ruler, king Allant, started fucking up with forbidden magic, got insane and basically caused the apocalypse>The demonic, giggling fat magisters are a gradual symptom of his madness and the slow collapse of the kingdom>After the fall, parts of the castle became feasting ground for the dragons>The 3 bosses encountered in the palace are Allant's 3 main generals turned into demonsSoul
>>738448479I like the swamp, like seriously love itit was intense, and scary, and reminded me of my first time through blighttownyeah I was late to the party on this onebut, to be honest, the areas just felt so much more interesting than the later games for some reason, I was really impressed
>>738448479I played it a couple years after trying ds1 and steamrolled it, it's kind of insane how good the movesets are compared to ds1. I remember thinking it'd have been cool to have those climbable walls you drop down from in boletaria in the undead burg, the most noticeable thing for me was how much more verticality the levels had compared to ds1 areas. Latria was good. The swamp was nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be, grass kinda trivialized a lot of it. I think I found the rest of the game so easy I didn't really remember the other levels
>>738448990>The demonic, giggling fat magisters are a gradual symptom of his madness and the slow collapse of the kingdomI thought the idea was that the fat officials were the ones who tempted Alant with the soul arts and that they’re the real villains of the story. I think they’re the only enemy you find in multiple areas which shows that they’re pulling the strings behind the scenes from multiple angles.
>>738448893>>738448716For me it's Valley of Defilement. God that place is amazing, does such a good job at conveying the grime and filth, and the thematic contrast with the faith stuff, and Maiden Astraea especially ofc, you find there really sells it.DeS as a whole is just atmospheric as fuck. Every single level is, one of the major benefits of making separate areas that don't connect to eachother. Painted world in DaS1 benefits from the same.
I like how slow DeS and DaS is. The gotta-go-fast updates to enemy movement and player response are out of this world in the recent games.
>>738448479It made me a better gamer. I liked the nexus and the runes on the floor
>>738449575Redpill me on the Valley of Defilement, Garl Vinland, Selen Vinland and Astraea lore
>>738448479Demons Souls is overall the better game. But Dark Souls 1 have higher highs.
>>738449914I like it in BB where it peaks and they fully lean into it. Shit like DaS3 feels fucking stupid as it tries to have both options of fast or slow and fit it all into the DaS formula.
>>738448716>>738448893>Grey cloudy sky with some castle ruins and a caveYes, Latria is better
>>738449191DS1 has the best movesets besides Bloodborne. They did some weird RPG shit in DS1 that basically ruined the move sets
>>738448479Biorr is still the best Souls NPC to this day.
>>738449575>You…>You killed him, didn't you?>Very Well, I can no longer resist you.>Do as you like. Take your precious Demon soul.>THE DEMON WAS DESTROYEDutter kinonew games could never
>>738448479I never played the original. So it's shit.
>>738448716>DS3 was my introduction to these games (like most people except they lie about it)This is bait right?
The remake fucked up the art style so much. I really gotta try emulating the original to see if you can get 60fps
