To that fat fucker last thread who said that thief doesn't deserve "best story"/have good writing: fuck you!Here's three reasons:1. Most games have pretty weak writing, so the standard isn't that high. It was either thief or chrono trigger for me2. Thief has great writing. Not in the sense that it's a genius work of literature, but in the sense that it is functional, uncontrived, fits the game medium extremely well and is memorable. You are a thief taking on any contract you can get to pay for rent. You end up accepting a job you shouldn't have and get in trouble and involved in a greater scheme. So on one hand, you don't have generic fantasy selfless hero with no personal stakes trying to save the world. On the other, the narrative being episodic in an organic way means you can have a game being subdivided into levels feel natural. And every level/episode takes place in an interesting location that contributes to the worldbuilding, making you learn more about the society, history and land. This is also "writing" to some extent. Thief followed "show don't tell" and when it told you things it was efficient and stylish, the mission briefings are universally regarded as awesome.3. Thief is a game particularly beloved by writers: terry pratchett and mark laidlaw both named it their favorite game at some point
