Reminder that Original Dark Souls 2 is superior to Shit of the First Scholar:
1. SOTFS ruined the lighting system, cranked up exposure and ruined the entire aesthetic of the game.
2. SOTFS enemy TYPE placement is nonsensical and illogical, it ruins immersion and environmental storytelling.
3. SOTFS healing upgrade item placement (estus flask shards and sublime bonedust) are inferior to that of the Orginal Dark Souls 2.
4. SOTFS ruins the progression, flow and exploration of the game by adding a lot of shitty petrified statues blocking off areas for no good reason.
5. SOTFS nerfed many bosses and their damage, turning the game into a casualized garbage game.
6. SOTFS nerfed a lot of the encounters with the normal enemies too, only a few encounters were made harder in SOTFS. Contrary to popular belief, as a whole SOTFS is much easier than the Original Dark Souls 2. SOTFS is a casualized garbage game.

The original game's lighting and "aesthetic" was already ruined by the pre-release downgrade, my man
I played hundreds of hours of original DS2 and didn't have any problems adjusting to SotFS, never felt the need to go back
SotFS also made lots of good smaller changes like adjusting stats of many weapons to make them more balanced and worthwhile to use

The pathtracing version of the mod should be uploaded on Nexus pretty soon, I tweak my preset as I play through the game, it's not finished, haven't even touched later areas, plus the mod itself also makes changes to areas with every beta release so there's no point making an all-encompassing preset right now before the full release

You should experiment with the settings yourself, I just turned my game into Sunny Souls. The old version is still good since it has much better performance and a much more cohesive overall atmosphere, the pathtracing mod can make lots of areas pitch black

DS2 was the last souls game I played, this was post-ER, and it literally was a far better than adventure game than ER and DS3.

It has a lot of faults and I understand why it was shat on so hard when directly compared to DS1 but you can see how they went through real effort to create the same sense of adventure that DS1 had, filled with a lot of variety in not just environments but challenges too and it has a good amount of it's own innovations as well. It was incredibly refreshing to play after DS3 which tries so hard to copy DS1 while adding very little to the game beyond "more complex" rollslop combat and ER where level design is practically non-existent and it presents many of the same tired challenges from previous souls game, while further leaning into the bullshittery of the bosses that spam combos at you.

It's crazy to think that this game has been ostracized for so long because of it's initial opinion, when on modern reflection it's far better and did a lot more to try and stand apart from previous titles while still capturing the core adventure feeling that is the REAL reason people like DS1 so much. Not this nu-idea where people only like souls because they're LE HARD!!!

It's really not that shocking. Dark Souls II was victim to a massive youtuber hate bangwagon after it released which shaped popular opinion on the game. I know people in my personal life who have outright skipped 2 after playing all other games in the series because "people online said it was bad and it looks bad".
Now that a significant amount of time has passed and more and more people are actually playing it divorced from the opinions of children with webcams making videos about why the game sucks because it isn't spectacle rollslop, sentiment is changing.
