A year after release, Firaxis walks back Civilization VII's most loathed mechanic
>Time-Tested Civs: By far the most-requested addition, you'll be able to play as one civ throughout an entire campaign when the Test of Time update goes live. While you'll still have the option to evolve your empire into a different civilization during Age Transitions, the ability to play as one civ across the span of history is something many players hold dear as a core component of the Civ experience.
And a bunch of other stuff too but that's the biggest change.
Can it save this entry or is it too little too late?

That's a shame. I've been forced to not play Civ 7 for the past 8 months because of this shit - Why try to get better at a game that will cease to exist? But I love Civ 7 and really hope that nu-Civ 7 isn't too shit.

The last Civ game Sid Meier had any direction on is 4
>>
It's good that they are addressing this, but it feels like a band-aid on a gaping wound and I'm not sure it's going to be enough since the whole game is designed around Civ Switching

Furthermore, there's still a mismatch of leaders and the civs they represent since any civ can use any leader, and some civs have no leader from their own culture

>>738475864
The unit graphics that the Maya use are also good, they did a nice job creating a set of assets that is based on actual military garb and armor from a variety of different Mesoamerican civilizations without it feeling generic.

Sadly the way they are implemented (as just the Antiquity Era variation of a combined Central/Meso-South American set, wheras the Exploration era variation of that same asset group is Andean themed, because currently the Maya are the only Prehispanic Antiquity era civ and the Inca are the only Prehispanic Exploration era civ) might create problems down the line, if they add Mesoamerican exploration era civs or Antiquity Era Andean ones

Are there more or less wonders than in VI? Obviously wonders had to be nerfed from V but having so many you couldn't possibly build all of them even in dominant games was not a good way to go about it, they felt so unimportant.

Holy fuck, how is this still a discussion.
Just press the fix-everything-button. It's that easy.
>>
>>738480147
There's clearly still parts of the dev team that are on point, there's small details like Napoleon speaking with a Corsican accent, or Isabella with a Castilian accent, that add a sense of authenticity, but it's totally let down by the screwed up gameplay systems. Like Simon Bolivar as a leader, but no Gran Columbia or anything close as a civ to play, so no matter who you pick he's mismatched, and only gets more so switching around, and he's not alone. If you're gonna detach leaders from civilizations, you should still have their home civ available.

I have a feeling she's somewhat influenced in this game by her depiction in "The Great" comedy tv show with Elle Fanning that had her as a young woman. Which might explain why she's a cutesy waifu in the same entry that has so many ultra tryhard "progressive" leader choices.

>So we spent a good long while analyzing and taking to heart all of the critiques we received, eventually boiling it down to a few basics:

>1. The core tradition of Civ, for the entirety of its 30+ years of existence, has centered exclusively on playing as a single civilization from beginning to end. To upend that essential piece so suddenly, without even the option to continue telling that same meta-historical tale, felt like too far a break.
>2. The critical fantasy of Civ is one that empowers through agency. Less of a sim and more of a sandbox, taking the Mayans to the moon, or engaging in nuclear armageddon as Gandhi are these incredibly cathartic, supremely Civ-ish experiences, because you could choose to engage in these reality-defiant histories. By removing a key part of that agency, the ability to produce that familiar fantasy felt missing.
>3. The consistency of play and historicity wasn’t always there, as we asked players to go from leading those once moon-bound Mayans to… the Incans? To… Mexico? Some “historical” pathways felt more than a little off, and not all had a great way to feel “complete." Couple that with the mechanical mental load of learning new identities and capabilities not just for your new civ but new competing civs on each Age Transition, and it began to feel like an overburdening that broke many out of the strategic flow state that Civ is known for.
No shit?

It never was. It's a game about you playing a civilization so powerful it was able to exist from the beginning of recorded history that never collapsed via its own internal problems or become subject to another one which is next to impossible. People can bring up China and Egypt, but their histories show a lot of changing hands in leadership through internal struggles as well as being under the rule of other foreign powers, so not the idea of what Civ pushes which is "a civilization that stands the test of time."

Russian, but given they already have several French speaking leaders I can see why they wanted the sound of Russian instead. She did learn Russian in real life, even if she spoke French at court. I don't know if her Russian in the game has an accent or not since I don't speak Russian OR French, but they have Napoleon accurately speaking with a Corsican accent (according to players anyway, again, me speaky no Frenchy) compared to Lafayette so maybe they did for her too.

Russian. Their reasoning given was

I don't even think it's a bad mechanic but how fucking retarded to you have to be to force civ switching onto everyone, it should have been something optional from the very start
The only reason they did that shit was so that they could nickle and dime DLCs better

No it's not. But if that's on the wiki that's fucking great.

Shitlibs love pretending that brown literally-who tribes were on equal footing with Whites and Asians, even if those tribes were bloodthirsty psychopaths like Dahomey.

Gamers: I wish devs would try new things
Devs: Okay, here's a new thing
Gamers: I hate this and I hate you! DELETE THIS NOW
Why are gamers like this?

New things can be bad.

A new thing they tried was hexagonal tiles. People liked them just fine once they got used to it.

What Civ should I play if I never played any of them before?
Its one of the few franchises I've never played

Yes, it's good. It's different from 5 but it's good as an alternative. There's plenty of mods to make it better too. I don't like the global warming mecahnics because it's not fun/effective, I do like the natural disasters.

>I wish devs would try new things
Said no Civ fan ever.
Nobody asked for era resets, civ switching, civ independent leaders, forced AI managed cities, etc.
Also making the UI absolute shit isn't trying new things.
The only thing in Civ 7 that people asked for is navigable rivers.

Do you really have enough time to play Civ III/IV with so many hot chicks begging you for sex, Civchad?

5 then 6.
Make sure to have all the expansions.

I too love it when rome rushes ironworking, builds 2-3 legion Unique Units, uses them to chop an armory because legions can chop woods, and rush great general projects for stacking +5 bonuses on each legion, giving them more melee combat power than a ww2 tank except its still turn 30 and you maybe have a horse and two archers

Are the maps still ridiculously small? After playing Paradox games Civilization just feels claustrophobic asf
>>
>>738475273
Honestly, they shoulda left this in the dumpster just all-in’d on civ 8 with the main marketing pitch as a ‘return to tradition’ and ‘giving the fans what they want’.
Vidya, especially nowadays, live and die on first impressions, and civ 7 had an atrocious first impression.
Not to mention, as another anon wrote in so other thread, civ 7 is now some bastard hybrid as they up-ended the core engine to plug the old square peg in a now round hole. The game wasn’t built around it at the conceptual level, and a ‘large update’ can only do so much.
Also XCOM died so they can choke on this.
>>
>>738522568
These games take a long time to make, a Civ 8 would be 4-5 years off at least if not more. That's a long time to go without your bread and butter franchise being on top, better to try to salvage this one from the botch.

6 was better than 5 as a single player experience because it felt like you were fighting separate computer opponents rather than mine super-AI with multiple puppets working together to specifically turbofuck you.
>>
>>738522961
one super-AI*
But 5 was the better multiplayer experience because it was the last time Firaxis cared about balance

Really funny to go from animated leaders with full backgrounds, to animated leaders and concept art backgrounds, and finally clumsily animated leaders with no background, just a clipart banner. And the price just increases each time.

Part of their detaching leaders from civilizations. can't have Theodora with Constantinople behind her if she's leading the Incas. Not that Theodora is in VII.
