please sell me on this game

It’s the only single player game that gets my blood pumping like a hardcore competitive match. When you’ve been grinding karma ranks for the past 20 minutes to get through a gate, you really, REALLY don’t want to die. Outside of self imposed no death challenges, I’ve never played another single player game that’s implemented stakes as well as this one does.

I refuse

>>
>>738484407
so is it a hard game?
>>
>>738485297
not that anon, but it is full of things that can catch you off guard, but the game offers very deep movement mechanics that allow for interesting ways of escaping sticky situations as your skill increases.
(here's an example of the sort of stuff you can do)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-ILrR-YX9o
>>
>>738485297
At first, yeah. The game doesn’t tell you much of anything about what your character is capable of movement wise and which tactics work on which enemies, you’re expected to figure things out on your own. You start out toward the bottom of the food chain but over time realize you’re actually the apex predator, like that one meme about primitive man learning to throw rocks. Scenarios that feel like total bullshit in the beginning stages become almost trivial once you know how to approach them. Honestly the game is most fun when you’re starting to figure things out but before you’ve discovered the best tactics and movement options.
>>
>>738483312
It's a complete, complex and unique experience, in witch you should go in as blind as you possibly can.
This is not a game to be run through "to finish your backlog" but to enjoy it as much as you can because you'll never play it for the first time again.
You should consider this game a proper adventure. You will feel lost a lot, and that's the game working properly.
>what about the dlc
Never played, so I dunno how much did they fucked up
>>
>>738485718
>>738485753
is it harder than hollow knight/ss?
>>
>>738485895
I’d say it starts out feeling harder and you’ll die a lot early on but it’s actually easier due to the number of options you have instead of hitting a boss wall until you learn its patterns like in HK/SS. Enemy behavior is somehow more complex yet simpler and more intuitive at the same time.

Honestly just pirate it and leave this thread before someone spoils it.
>>
>>738483312
If you like to explore, you'll like this game. Not just exploring the map, but exploring how all the creatures and environments interact. Don't be afraid to experiment. It will feel unfair at times, but there's usually something you could've done differently to not die.
>>
>>738483312
Protip: Ever notice that the yellow bastard sometimes stops directing you? He probably didn't stop; he just sometimes switchs to doing this glancing motion toward a door with his head instead of the marker. The devs shouldn't have done this because he just looks like he's wigging out and that sucks because as he moves he ALWAYS looks like he's wigging out.
>>
>>738485895
yes, it is. don't listen to them about movement. there's a bunch of tranny "movement tech" that you'll never give a fuck about and need a wiki to learn. just play the game normally, it's a great experience
>>
>>738485895
It's an entirely different kind of difficulty that can't really be compared with HK.
>>
>>738483312
Literally every single person I know who likes rain world has said it took multiple times trying it over 2+ years to get into it. So my advice would be try it before inevitably dropping it, then repeat this process until it clicks.

It's very hard to get into, but it's absolute soul overload. Play it if you want to immerse yourself in an alien world
>>
>>738485895
Mechanically its way easier than Hollow Knight
>>
>>738485895
fighting a tough enemy in Rain World is all about adapting to a sudden situation you find yourself in, and quickly managing the various objects and environment at your disposal, as opposed to memorizing boss attack patterns and performing tight dodges. Everything moves with more inertia since it's more physics driven, so you'll get by without korean reflexes.
>>
>>738483312
how do you make the rabbit fox thingy to put a stake in vertical position so you can climb it?
>>
just don't play the dlc. troon fanfic

>>738483312
Casualties: Unknown but good
>>
>>738493427
SLUGCAT ANON!!!
you have to backflip, and at the apex of your jump, quickly aim down and throw. if you don't know how to backflip, it's like a 3d mario somersault (run in one direction, turn in the other direction and input jump immediately)
>>
>>738485895
No, lol
>>
Is it better to play this with controller or keyboard? I was a keyboard fag.
>>
>>738493453
I'll never forgive Downpour for turning Rain World into a discord furry game
>>
>>738493614
Personally, I play with controller and I don't see how anyone plays on keyboard without developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
when it come to the movement tech, i think of inputs as being like fighting game motions and it works out pretty well for me
>>
I never beat the game, I gave up when I went to the the sky place and the bottom sea place where you meet your first actual NPC or something and gave up.
Game feels bigger than any open world game and just too daunting.
>>
>>738493521
Thank you, sir. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
>>
>>738493740
that's the beauty of exploring anon. you were halfway done
>>
>>738493740
At least you didnt end up in the sewer. That was "fun" for my first run. I didnt even restart, i made it all the way to filtration system and back before realizing something was wrong
>>
>>738493614
Keyboard, dunno how anyone pulls off complex movements with controller.
>>
>>738493997
>dunno how anyone pulls off complex movements with controller.
It's kind of like doing a dp motion in a fighting game
>>
no
>>
>>738494053
>>738493691
Do you use dpad or stick?
>>
>>738493820
Ok so how do I know what to do? I feel this is the kind of game you need a guide for.
>>
>>738493997
There's some stuff that's annoying like coming out of a vertical pipe and having to shift up to catch a pole right as you're coming out. I've fallen to my death plenty for that kind of shit. But for general movement and the techniques you *actually* use (sliding, backflips, rolling), I've never had a problem with a controller.
>>
>>738494231
you don't you follow the yellow guy. if you did meet that npc then your next goal is quite clear. you don't need a guide. that being said if you go off the beaten path it's not a big deal, it's fun to explore the cool areas and a lot of places connect to each other anyway
>>
>>738494231
How'd you get to the sea place? One of its connections connects to the correct path.
>>
>>738494373
alright well I give up on that playthrough, I don't remember a thing
>>
>>738494231
its an exploration game. you explore
simply filling out the map for each zone is enough guidance to finish the game

Downpour is fanfic but still worth playing if you like the gameplay
Rivulet is fun and cute, fun movement and gimmicks, best campaign by far
Saint is also fun, grapple worm movement is god tier, has some good story moments but also the worst level of all time
Artificer is cool even if there’s not much to them other than spamming spears off screen
Gourmand is a boring collectathon and his crippled movement is soul draining after the ecstasy of the previous 3
Spear master is garbage, take a character who feeds with spears and can hold two of them and then force him to carry an object in one hand for half the game and spend hours tediously building ladders to explore a boring sterile region.

Never played the newer one so idk.
>>
>>738493453
So the only 2 DLCs: Downpour and Watcher are tranny and fanfics?
>>
>>738494460
This is the way to do it. I never bothered with the yellow guide. I learned early on (in Outskirts) that it just seemed to send me in circles trying to find the shelter or food or whatever. So instead, I just found gates and see where they lead. It was a long, roundabout journey, but eventually I got on the right track, just by finding new areas.
>>
>>738494415
that's ok. start again. you may go a different route this time, there's multiple ways to get to where you need to go

>>738483312
no fuck off you can't play it
>>
>>738494739
yes. to be honest downpour has SOME interesting stuff to it (artificer is a highlight because of the latter half of its campaign), but the overall vibe and lore are completely butchered and is QUITE LITERALLY tranny fanfic because it's just a mod that was made official. it's worth playing if you solely view rain world as a fun platforming game or whatever, but if you value it as an experience then it's utter garbage. don't even get me started on the watcher though
>>
>>738494231
do you remember learning how to ride a bike? just do that
>>
>>738494540
Spearmaster is great if you save 3 passages for the final part of the game, I just left the pearl in the nearest shelter from when I got it and passaged back and forth at the very end.
>>
Can you play the game without the dlcs? When I first played it had downpour areas but I was to to replay it without any of the dlc stuff.
>>
>>738483312
From what i've heard - it's a terrible game until you bash your head against it for about 50 hours and then something clicks and you start loving it.
>>
>>738495169
I don't know if I can handle replaying it for the 3rd time, yeesh.
>>
>>738495282
i don't remember if the remix options let you disable them. if not, then just pirate an earlier version
>>
>>738495287
people only say something like that because it's a game that requires patience and thought, which is the bane of 90% of zoomers out there
>>
>>738495332
Yeah, i'll look it up and see.
>>
>>738495287
this is just a meme phrase like how everyone kept repeating 'its hard but fair' when dark souls came out

Why does rainworld have gay flags now?

I use the joystick on my xbox one wired controller.
you could totally play Rain World on a fightstick tho
>>

Here's the short version Anon
First you go all the way up and then you go all the way down. Spoilers idiot, there's your main campaign progression in a nutshell.

Look at this.
>>
>>738493614
I have always played with a keyboard. I have always seen controllers as strictly inferior. Think about it, you have all these fingers to press buttons simultaneously, and now you have to do it all with 2 thumbs that are moving around between buttons, wasting time and tiring out your muscles doing simple things like switching directions.
>>
>>738493631
I will never forgive the Rain World discord for banning me just for drawing spearmaster making a spear from his ass.
>>
>>738483312
I got filtered by the first area. Does it click eventually? Is it outer wilds tier?
>>
>>738498790
Beating the game could be seen as achieving nirvana, so I would say so.
>>
>>738483312
It's a game that probably does the single best job in the industry at selling itself as an experience first and foremost. There's as few layers between the player and the slugcat as possible, and you're always motivated by the goals you'd have in the situation the slugcat is rather than meta ones like just wanting to beat the game because that is the goal of a video game, but it's also important to note that it does all this without actually sacrificing anything on there still being direction, progression, a goal to complete, and still being a video game instead of a directionless sandbox where you make your own fun.
>>
>>738483312
It's like playing Demon's Souls for the first time before Souls became mainstream.
>>
>>738497070
Any niche indie game's fanbase will eventually devolve into furries, trannies, or some combination.
>>
>>738485297
the first tag on steam is "difficult"
if you just look at the trailer and the art you would think it's just another cute 10 hour indie platformer, but rain world absolutely will make you suffer and rage
>>

The world and aesthetic seemed interesting to me but the prospect of trudging back and forth across this huge maze of a world multiple times across multiple characters sounded like ass so I just looked up the whole story instead. Very interesting premise but I don't think the tedium would have felt worth it to me
>>
>>738498706
no jokes allowed in trooncords
