I think arena was actually good before resilience and rating buyers became a thing. I managed to get 2400 with fire mage MS warrior before resilience. But once everyone was full gear the damage of fire mage went from bursts to just garbage because it was all about fast switching with Pom pyro. So resilience made healer Druid’s snowball into unlikable bullshit. High warlord era never had this problem, it’s whoever hit harder and CC better.
Shattrath was the only bad part of it, and that’s a minor inconvenience

extra skills from later expansions and retail were unlocked with quests hidden out in the world, no test server so everything was found (and tested) on live
BFD was reworked into a 10 man raid with a couple of epic (level 25) drops
Ashenvale was reworked into a level 25 world pvp zone

after three months the cap was raised to 40, Gnomer was turned into a raid, new skills added etc

then 50 with rework to sunken temple, then 60, then a bunch of new postgame dungeons were added, Karazan Crypts, new outdoor Scarlet raid and so on.

it was basically a slow walk of classic+ ideas

lots of interesting experimental stuff like rogues getting threat generating abilities for evasion tanking or mages getting a healing spec or warlocks getting a demon transformation and tanking etc

It peaked at level 25 season 1 and got worse with each update because there was like 5 guys in charge of the whole thing, game and economy breaking bugs they couldn't fix in time, also extreme botting problems they could never stop

I still miss it though, Thunder Bluff and Darnassus were the capitals of S1 because Ashenvale was the endgame zone and you could level any class you wanted to "level cap" in a weekend if you wanted to try out new stuff.

Or maybe gear becomes something that can be destroyed or lost, in exchange for it being vastly easier and shorter to obtain. That ascension private server had stuff like prestige leveling and fun modes that remixed your personal leveling experience in exciting, challenging, or strange ways. That would be a good first step I think. The idea of an MMO should be to have everyone out there in the world existing as characters on their own individual journeys, not as legions of soulless automatons doing the same tasks week after week.
