For mystery VNs, the best are Umineko and Remember11. Avoid Western shit, it doesn't come close. Trust me, I played all of them.
>>738490462>the best are tranny "everybody is in on it EX DEE" garbage and unfinished11Nah I don't trust your newfag ass LOL

They are worse than books, worse than video games, worse than anime, it’s honestly better if you don’t start at all. And I’m genuinely not trying to be an asshole or a contrarian, there’s so much better stuff out there
>>738492000Pure schizocore. Worth playing for how unique it is. Personally though I don't like the second half of the story. The intro chapter is also pure yuri filler that only exists to filer potential readers.
>>738489978
>>738492105No they aren't. I read all the best mystery novels people recommend, and they aren't any better than VNs. Pic related is supposedly the peak of Japanese mystery fiction, and it was terrible.
>>738492105BTFO instantly by a random anon
>>738489978Saya no Uta is probably the best 'first visual novel'. It's only a few hours long, only has two choices, and it's good. After that, I'd rec Fate/Stay Night, 999, and Stein's;Gate. You can develop your taste from there. There' also romance-focused, 'dating-sim'-esque ones, but I don't like them so I won't try to recommend anything there.

Whatever looks interesting to you. Trying to play "the canon" instead of just whatever looks appealing is a good way of never wanting to interact with VNs again.Choose by checking settings that seem interesting to you and with a length that seems manageable.
>>738492704Sorry but if I'm reading a schizo VN I want a schizo story, not generic yuri shit.
monster girl quest
>>738489978This is a question on the level of "I'm new to novels/ movies/ music, what should I check out first?" It's an entire medium, not a genre.Where you should start is the same as with any other medium: you've seen something that piqued YOUR interest, so you follow through and give it a chance. So if you think Higurashi looks neat, check it out. And if you like it, THEN you can ask for recs similar to Higurashi. Or if you don't like it, you try the next VN that looks appealing.Save the alleged must-reads of the medium for if and when you actually want to read them.
>>738489978Remember11 since I made two of my friends that never read VNs and made fun of me for reading 100 hour ones like Umineko get into it and love it.Starts good, has 0 filler and a great ending that will leave you thinking.
>>738493695>unfinished11yikes
>>738493718I get it dude you're bored as fuck but don't disrespect one of the only VNs that respect your time and don't have you sit through boring slice of life dialogues. It's pathetic that shit like Ever17 got popular and not R11
>>738493838https://adayem.wordpress.com/2020/09/26/mages-s-special-interview-with-ex-kid-employees/unfinished11 is canonically unfinished. Don't pretend your favorite VN is some unparralled paragon of literature, faggot.
>>738493838>N7Charming cast, but nothing all that interesting happens.>E17Boring beginning, good middle, amazing ending.>R11Good pacing throughout, doesn't actually have an ending.Pick your poison. There's no perfect VN, they all have flaws. Raging Loop is another one with great pacing but a shit ending.
>>738494245>Raging Loop is another one with great pacingYeah, no. That one has generic slow VN pacing. The feasts are the only interesting parts.
>>738494245>>738494001>>738493718>>738493695sometimes when i see people talking about these i think of 11eyes which makes me want to kill myself for different reasons
>>738494001AND it's still the best VN, crazy right? You finish it, you sit there and go what the fuck was that? Then you go to the wordpress and read what the fuck happened then you realize just how much there is and what you missed then you start thinking why the fuck did this really good VN never get finished. Well it's because life is just simply unfair. You can even cope by saying that it has an actual ending since it traps You.>>738494245E17 has an awful middle, it just goes on and on with the rollercoaster and sandwich I don't even remember the VN since it was so fucking repetitive everything just mumbled together. R11 doesn't have a proper ending but what ending should there be? They escape, all is done. You can deduce every mystery from the TIPS section or the fan made blogpost. People overreact way too hard to this, yes it's literally unfinished but that doesn't mean the journey isn't one of the best in mystery VNsI loved Raging Loop until the big spider got shown, I blocked it out from there.
>>738490347
>>738494457>dude COPEAh, I see. A 2016+ newfag nigger believes that unfinished11 was intentionally made that way despite literal developers saying otherwise. What a mess of severe mental illness.
>>738489978HigurashiUmineko after that.
>>738494332There's constantly shit with consequences happening (i.e. characters dying) throughout. Compared to your average VN where literally nothing happens for extremely large stretches of time I wouldn't consider it slow. If you don't give a shit who lives or dies and only "what's the True Route Ultimate Mystery Secret" then yeah it's probably a terrible game to play because the ending sucks.
>>738494512Are you retarded? You can't even finish reading my posts how can you shit on R11. It obviously had an ending in mind but when they couldn't do it they decided to leave it on an "ending" that made the most sense. Can you understand what I'm writing or is your autism too strong
>>738489978999 or Utawarerumono might be good because they have significant gameplay portions.
>>738494664Your opinion does not supersede the developers and you acting like every 2011+ Reddit immigrant who believes everybody who disagrees with them is autistic shows your youthful newfaggotry.
>>738494786No, I'm only calling people who couldn't see my obvious sarcasm in saying the cope part autistic. It obviously had like 2 more hours after the final CG of explaining stuff but that's the best part about R11, you can make out the story just from tips.Keep seething that R11 is the best mystery VN even in its unfinished state. Pretty sure everyone that read it agrees that it's really good and the most consistent VN
>>738494457>R11 doesn't have a proper ending but what ending should there be?See: Ever17's true route (Coco route), it's the perfect ending to the game and ties everything up in an emotionally satisfying conclusion. R11 is just straight up missing that final route. "Just imagine what happened in your mind" isn't good enough, if I was that imaginative I'd be sitting in the author's chair but I'm not.
>>738489978I'm actually reading higurashi, in episode 3 right now. It's crazy how quick they go from child sexual slavery jokes, to a serious portrayal of child abuse
>>738495054Remember11 is objectively the best-paced mystery VN. That alone makes it worth reading.
>>738495054>cope>autistic>seethingYou will never fit in to 4chan.org, newfag.
>>738495083Savor it, episode 3 is peak Higurashi. You get another highpoint at 6 but it's all downhill from there.
Kanon
>>738492312Yes they are, vns are genuinely not good, I’m not even a mystery fan, but the sherlock holmes and the hannibal lecter novels are better than quite literally all visual novels put together. And it’s your fault if you are only taking recommendations based on what other people like instead of what you like
>>738494525Did everyone play with the modern textbox?I just used the original way of displaying text. No mouth speaking animations either.I don't regret it.
>>738489978katawa shoujo
>>738495193Yeah, I like umineko way better so far. I loved Battler as a protagonist, but I really don't like Kei. He's very annoying, which tbf, he's just a kid, my only hope is that he gets better in later episodes.
>>738495505I can tell you're not a mystery fan, since despite being iconic the Homles novels are bad mysteries. I read several golden age mystery novels and they were not any better than Umineko.
Suzukage Hotori.
>>738495518No idea why you would do that.
>>738495850That's how the text was displayed originally so I thought it was part of the experience. Using modern textboxes felt weird to me.
>>738495989I hope you at least enabled the voice acting.
>>738496119Yes. The voice acting was kino. I read the entire thing on autoplay with the voiceover and I endured every single one of Maria's Uuuuu's.
Would it be worth writing my own visual novel? I’m a published author, so I probably have more experience with the writing side of things than most, but I’ve always been skeptical of VNs, because a lot of them barely count as vidya. For example, I played House in Fata Morgana and didn’t like it because it was basically just a light novel with a dialogue option every few hours. Call me arrogant, but I often wonder if I could do it better.
>>738495582One of Ryuukishi's tics as a writer is that he clearly enjoys writing female characters more than men, so even the male protagonists aren't going to be as well developed and compelling.
>>738496367No, it's a dead genre. I already published one and nobody cares. You'll get a much bigger audience with a CRPG.
>>738496367"I could do better" sounds like a pretty shallow impetus to make something creative, but knock yourself out.
>>738496367>but I’ve always been skeptical of VNs, because a lot of them barely count as vidya.I don't see why this would matter if you're mostly interested in the writing side of thingsPlenty of VNs are good while being devoid of gameplay
>>738496384Umineko is clearly a more female focused story, but I think it has a pretty balanced cast between ages and sexes, and male characters are well written too.Higurashi is more like your typical anime, with most of the cast being teenagers and waifus, but really my only problem is Kei, he's the only character I dislike, which is why I hope he gets better.
>>738496691I guess I’d feel the need to include some level of interactivity because otherwise, why not just make it a regular novel? Of the VNs I’ve played, the ones I seem to like most are actually porn ones, because they usually have a decent amount of interactivity.
>>738496728Keiichi's best (and possibly worst) moments come in Part 6. I liked him the whole way through, though. That said, Keiichi is not the protagonist of Higurashi.
>>738490040this thing was giga mid cant believe i got scammed into reading it at least it was short
>>738496968Video game writing is different from novel writing. The best written "VN" is probably Ace Attorney. The OG trilogy is very tightly written, much more so than the author's later works.
>>738497145>The best written "VN" is probably Ace Attorneypfft lol
>>738497145Fuck no. Ace Attorney might be amusing, but it's completely retarded.
>>738497145>The best written "VN" is probably Ace AttorneyRead more VNs. You clearly lack experience in the genre.
>>738496968I don't tend to think of story/dialogue choices as "gameplay" (which is somewhat pedantic of me) but I agree that sort of interactivity is good to have and one of the main reasons you'd make a VNThough I think even without interactivity, graphics and sound on their own can elevate the experience a lot. Like another anon in this thread mentioned, Saya no Uta only has 2 choices in the entire story but the visuals do a lot of heavy lifting to sell the main premise
>>738497176>>738497260Ace Attorney is the most critically acclaimed and popular VN series. There's a reason traditional ones like Ever17 remain obscure.

>>738497381Retard, the post I replied to said:>The best written "VN" is probably Ace Attorney. The OG trilogy is very tightly written...Coming back at me with "critical acclaim and popularity" is not a counter. It's a non sequitur. Lots of people liking something doesn't make it well or tightly written. Critical acclaim doesn't make the extraordinary retardation of the supposed genius prosecutors more believable. And holy fuck, you could not appeal to a worse argument. Miller Lite is "popular;" would you argue it's a high quality beer? And as for mainstream critics, they are at best individuals, and very often they are extremely compromised individuals. She is being very fucking clear about her feelings and what she's thinking, which is why I loved you is fine in this sentence and trying to say otherwise is pure fucking cope lmao
