the phantom pain's story missions really shine with the optional objectives you arent aware on on your first time playing them
Suddenly you have to plan routes, plan time of day, maybe you want to line up a sandstorm spawning mid mission, getting to places on time etc
It can turn a 5 minute mission into a 20 minute epic, the farther you get the more pressure you feel under. Some of these missions can take you around a huge spread of the map with various diverse locations. The downtime in travel or waiting just enhances the bursts of tension.
When it all goes right and you turn it in its the same feeling as turning in a huge on foot trek in Death Stranding.

In the Codec calls Raiden struggled to find civvie work because cyborgs are heavily discriminated against. He only joined Boris and his company cause he felt they were "one of the good ones" as far as PMC's go. It's like there's good gameplay trapped in Metal Gear Solid games that get buried by the dialogue far too often. It was novel at the time to have some hollywood tier level of writing in video games but now it doesn't matter because we've had people like Druckmann do the same thing.

Now about the coherence of the story...
It is so weird that a trend of the 2000s was to wrap up trilogies as soon as possible and only in the 2010s would studios and later games do the opposite and give you as little as possible.
MGS4 had to wrap up.
Gears of War, Killzone, ME3 and Resistance all had to wrap up.
Possibly Halo 3 had something to do with that, as in, hyping up the end of a trilogy somehow made games more successful, who knows!
But then we got spin-offs with varying degrees of success (Except Resistance because fuck me i guess).
There are 3 games trying to explain the rise of Outer Heaven, one is not canon, and the series never get there.
For MGSIV there was this notorious hurry to wrap things up and deliver this final act when the game possibly had a little more in it.
MGSV is similar in that regard. Kojima wanted to cut to the chase and used a convenient coma as a plot device. Soap opera writing, really but then MGSIV and MGSV are polar opposites.
One does too much and the other too little.
I like MGSV decompression to an extent.

Then again MGSIV and V funneled like 90% of Konami's available resources, every other game they published struggled to come out in time and under budget.

As far as I remember, the idea of MD Geist 2 is the conflict between the usual villain. the blue guy, and the uber-villain, Geist. In any other story, the blue guy would be the normal villain: a supersoldier who uses his powers to rule like a god among the people. But then he encounters Geist, who just wants to fight until he dies, without a single care for anything else.

It was a failure in gameplay. The chink kept doing a Molyneux about the game ''having an evolving battlefield'' and that type of crap. What we got was a nothingburger with just as much cutscenes as there was gameplay in total time spent.

What's sad is that he's never been able to realise any ambition that he had, ever. Like, he wanted MGS3 to be a survival game where you got dropped in a place many, many miles from your objective and you needed to slowly make your way to the mission area while surviving and being mindful of patrolling hunters. But he couldn't do it so the game was resorted to be made into rooms.
MGSV was his big chance but that game was Far Cry 2-tier at best. He can't even realise those things now, now that he's free to design/create pretty much anything he wants. He's a letdown after MGS2.
