X will plead with people to not kill them, whereas Zero makes a token request and then puts them to the sword at once if they don't comply. He just doesn't care anymore; he's doing his job because it's what he's always done and because of X, but it's just a job.Then, it depends on the timeline you follow. He seems to be recovering in X7 and X8, since now Axl's around to lighten the mood. Dialogue can still be pretty cold, but the cutscenes show some progress. He seems less like he's on the clock.In Zero, though it takes a while because of the amnesia, he finds his answer, which is arguably what it's always been and he just lost sight of it. He fights for the people he believes in. Even if he himself has little in the way of ideals, Ciel and the Resistance have hope for the Earth, so he'll bet on them. Believing in others even if he has nothing to believe for himself: that's what makes him Zero
