If it had just been flying missions the whole game, it might have been on par with 64. It really is only held back by the on foot gameplay. And I don't even think Fox going on foot was a bad idea, it fits the character imo. After Smash everybody wanted to run around and shoot laser guns as Fox, come on. The shooter gameplay was just underbaked and mediocre relative to its contemporaries, and those missions had really shitty objectives that slowed down the pace of the game. I wish they hadn't given up on the idea entirely.

I liked the ground missions' freedom to go after the objectives in any order you want, and the combo meter was a good evolution of 64's score system. Plenty of room for improvement, of course, namely a return to 64's branching route system instead of a linear list of levels, online for the multiplayer, etc, but that's what sequels are supposed to be for.
