You play as a guy marooned in a strange northern land. You go through different levels, finding keys, fighting monsters/bugs/ghosts/wild animals with ranged weapons. The combat is weak and janky as all get out. The atmosphere is what really sells it. Feels like an ACTUAL journey, just like in the name. It's also very weird (characters, writing).
>>
>>738570341
Not op but it's an exploration game with guns, people compare it to quake, but it's nowhere as good as a shooter, the reason you play it is for the adventure. The theme of "primitive isolated island with ruins and monsters" is peak videogames.

It’s sad these kind of post die so quickly on 4chan, if a post isn’t some ragebait hating on the popular thing then it just dies
>>
>>738574360
Part of it is that posts like this are typically about relatively short single-player games with little in the way of discussion fodder unless by chance someone is actively playing and wants to blogpost. I liked the game quite a bit but beyond saying "I liked the game quite a bit" there's not much to add in a vacuum.
>>
>>738574830
That’s the thing, “discussion” on 4chan is basically just hating on the game or arguing about completely unrelated things and racism or homophobia, or both. People here can’t genuinely talk about stuff they actually like
>>
Your game will be under rated and you will just have to live with it. It was the same with Valhiem and it will be the same for great games. No one understood Ico or Journey till way too late. The only one that got their attention was Shadow of Collosus because it was short enough that shitty journalists were able to finish it.

Yes, it's very good. One of very few games that felt actually immersive to me.
>>
>>738570729
The OST is fantastic and really made me think about how a game can stick in your mind long, long after you finished it because of the music and atmosphere. The music has the same qualities than the game in general, a bit awkward and "artisanal", but unique and truly evocative. Great use of the "hatsune miku" vocal synthesizer.

So yes OP, I finished it and absolutely loved it despite some really tedious sequences and shit gameplay loops.

I recommend these to anyone that liked Northern Journey on vibes and aesthetics alone, though Axis Unseen is also fairly similar mechanically. Very archery-focused.
>>
A rare case of game feeling like an actual adventure, not the tropey tired dollar store variety most games have.
Music, locations and the atmosphere are all top notch.
The gameplay isn't super polished but mastering the sling feels VERY satisfying, I completed like 95% of the game using only sling and it was quite challenging.
The only real downside I can name is that the game overstays its welcome, later locations are less of an adventure and more of an enemy spam gauntlet right up until the final boss.
>>
>>738570037
Its great but I never finished it, game gets worse when it focuses more on combat in later stages

>>
>>738575025
Nah certain games you can have almost perma threads up for due to them lending well to discussion and having new topics to discuss or being fun to discuss endlessly due to the nature of the work. Deus Ex for example can always get threads, most 40k games can, Any souls game (for better or worse), and DRPG etc. I can talk more about those topic and others than I can this game or similarly smaller games despite equally liking them as the other Anon suggested.

Fist one looks like the most generic UE5 slop. Skip
Third one looks like UE5 slop with extra steps. Skip.
Second one looks like discount Morrowind, much better. I might give it a try.

Northern Journey took Unreal Engine (4) and turned it into a pure kino. A single developer with nothing but a photo camera and zero prior gamedev skills. Other gamedevs should kill themselves at this point.
>>
I never did manage to get the sling upgrade.
>>
>>738585968
Don't forget said dev went innawoods to record himself slinging stones at shit for the game lmao. He also purposefully ignored all the advice he was given because fuck you, I know what I want to make.

What makes him turbo based is the game has a dedicated hide HUD button for screenshots as he knew what people wanted.

Super comfy, and I do have a soft spot for combat in this game, something about the feel of clunky wooden and primitive weapons. Strangely enough, it reminds me of Jedi Outcast, because the guns you get before the lightsaber are similarly sloooow. But the last parts of the game suck ass, I could barely finish Eyerape Veins, and then it just non-stop combat arenas across a pretty barren level, not a fan at all.

I drunkenly wrote out a post last night about how I hopes this thread would still be around today so I could join in on the conversation about this awesome game and others like it, but my Internet fucked up. Anyway,

Sometimes games can be alright bros, but responsibility is the enemy of it all.

Try Golden Heart if you haven't, it's Northern Journey: desert edition. While not quite as good, I loved it too. Pic related

>>738609561
I enjoyed it but you definitely have to be in the mood to meet it at its pace and/or like the pole vaulting quite a bit. The storytelling was a bit rote but I still would put it above Babbidi or Metal Garden in the "fuck around in a concrete shithole" genre even though those two are aesthetically stronger. I need to get back to Lorn's Lure at some point.
>>
I think for this post I'll pretend that I do kinda like a lot of the shooting in this game in a fucked up way, it's kinda satisfying landing long distance hits with that clunky fucking sling. It's a lot of work making posts about this game seem like I'm not just 1 person, but it's worth it to try and get into that one specific anon's head.

>>
>>738609731
The fps elements are jank but I think they add more than they detract. Its weird, but the entire game is weird so it adds to the experience. And its not like the weapons are guns they are weird shit like rock slings and semi-auto crossbows so them having the weird aiming scheme fits.
>>
>>738609789
I'd believe it. I only got about a half-hour in because I wanted to finish Peaks of Yore first, but got sidetracked from that as well. I was flitting between a bunch of shit back in March when I tried it.
>>
>>738609970
I still need to play that one, might start it today if baby steps ends up being too cringe to enjoy.
>>
>>738609884
I was just thinking about it a bit more and the way these weapons were done will stay with me. I'm sure it would've been much easier to have a simple but bogstandard firstperson shooting mechanics, but I suspect some of the jank was definitely intentional, maybe as a way to make the simple AI on most of the enemies present at least a bit of challenge.
>>
>>738570037

The first section where you get the sling with the little black nigger chasing you in the woods was quite spooky and set the tone for the rest of the game. It flips between comfy and atmospheric and tense.

No. 99% of people are absolute giganormies. Niche nerdshit is VERY niche. We're not as cool as the Finns, sadly.

Forest Path for me, I just want to be a whimsical guy who stalks people from behind the trees but overall is harmless.

I liked it too, probably my favorite game released in the last 5 years.
The sequel was one of the few games I was genuinely looking forward to but last I heard the dev ran into some problems during development and now he's been silent for over a year.
I hope that glorious assburger is doing okay and didn't kys himself or something.
>>
The OST does a lot of heavy lifting in the game and that is fine by me.

This game is a gem. I actually liked the furry part of it, it felt like it "made sense" in that world, and some of the quests/places could be quite creepy.

like that ice zone you visit which is said to be haunted, and when you're about to leave you can actually see shadowy figures staring at you from atop the glacier
>>
>>738610495
Well yeah, in summer.
>>
>>738614294
it is a gem! kinda disappointed dev's next game is gonna be this farming slip slop

You meet undead spiders later on

Yeah it was kino, too bad the dev had some psychological breakdown and disappeared.
>>
>>738618168
Breakdown? Was he not just working on his next game and responding to feedback for Northern Journey?

you use somekind of submarine, not scuba diving per se.

You don't swim there.

You get a diving suit and have to do swimming and harpooning in the near end of the game.

Spiders are bros if you give them a chance. Ticks are proof that God is dead.
>>
>>738620207
Fortunately, this game has ticks too. They'll rain down on you from treetops and it's horrible.
>>
>>738620256
>he didn't look up
>>
>>738620456
the fuckers are the same color as the trees and form a viet conga line as soon as you piss off a single one of 'em
>>
>>738621005
They do have decent camouflage but you can pick them off in small groups - they have a very long detection range but you can creep up and snipe them out of each tree. Took me a few attempts to get through that section.

I fucking suck at this game.

>>738604357
Same, the game kinda takes a nosedive from the snow area onward.
Still a kino game, though, not many like it.
>>738628190
Fucking how?
INFRA is quite generous with how it allows you to solve most puzzles, you literally can half-ass majority of them and still get the best ending.
>>
>>738629302
I didn't claim I lost or anything. I'm aiming to get pictures of everything, but I'm surprised by what is and isn't damage.
>>
Loved this game. I listen to the ost often.
>>
>>738628190
bro what?
>>
>>738630642
Great ost. Even better atmosphere. Became one of my favorites.
>>
What I like about this is it's a "folk game;" just some guy taking inspiration entirely from his own country's environment rather than fiction tropes to tell a story. We need more of this.
>>
any mods or config needed to optimize the experience?
I had it DLd but never played it kek

Should run fine on whatever you have. I played entirely on the Steam Deck and it was locked to 90 FPS for the duration, if that tells you anything.

More games need Slings in general.
