Part of the satisfaction of solving something is knowing that overcoming it yourself was the only option. If you could just skip all the way to the final boss in a game, you wouldn't feel as satisfied after beating the boss even if you ignored the skip feature because you would know in the back of your mind that you didn't HAVE to develop and hone your skills to get there.

Was it? RE4 is incredibly generous with loot and sorting your inventory is trivial even for a child. It's just a little satisfying thing to do that people liked. Nobody's playing the game for it or bringing it up as one of the main reasons it's good. The original wouldn't be forgotten or rated poorly if it shipped with an autosort button anymore than if you changed some other minor shit like removing the merchant minigames. The only meaningful difference is you'd occasionally see people bringing up how they like sorting their inventories manually in threads about it.

Inventory wasn't ruined by auto sort you fucking idiot, the inventory was ruined by CLUTTER and LACK OF SOUL!

Gunpowder, resources, knives, bolts? It's all useless fucking trash. It crowds up the case with garbage. It makes sorting and organizing the case a waste of time. Having 8 weapons/grenades in quickslots means you never even need to open it. The menu is visually boring and forgettable, which makes you want to spend as little time as possible when you do open it, rather than in the original where you are incentivized to take in the beauty of the organized case because you NEED to be using it.

It's all a complete waste of time. The definition of a padded mechanic. I understand its inclusion, I really do. But it doesn't sufficiently add to the experience of RE4. It was never there and it never needed to be there. There's an argument that you have an element of player expression/strategy on when/what to craft but the reality is that you will always just craft the most powerful ammo that you can as often as you can (almost always shotgun). The game could easily just hand you some more ammo instead of forcing you to turn kitchen knives and scrap and gunpowder into your shotgun shells.

The auto-sort in this is one of the perfectly reasonable cases of "you control the buttons you press". If you don't press auto-sort, you get the exact same experience you had from the original game.

This is in part because inventory management was actually NOT that big a deal in the original. It only mattered in the scenarios where you were massively overstocked on items and got a new big item like a gun, in which case the answer wasn't actually to manage your inventory, it was to sell shit.

There was actually zero gameplay benefit to having a well organized case except for in the fringe cases where you have like 4 open slots that aren't next to each other. The actual management of the inventory specifically is almost entirely optional and while it's satisfying and novel, not actually required at any point in the game.
