Mass Effect has to be THE most overrated dogshit game series ever. They all have terrible gameplay and the story has been mediocre as well. It's a culmination of every western retardation. If it were released nowadays it would be a live service game with MTX as well.

Also added the fact that a lot of people who had played male the first time around may have changed over to female for replayability reasons. While the opposite is also true, it stands to reason that the people swapping over from female to male, than male to female, because less people played female to begin with.
