Is it normal to not be able to fight anything for the first like 3 weeks in HOMM3 while you build up or am I doing something wrong? The starts are so slow, building up takes forever before you can fight an avg stack
>>738596315>he waits until he can defeat neutrals without lossesngmiYou don't need those imps alive
>>738596315if you have to wait more than 1 day in homm3 you are likely doing something wrong.
>>738596594okay this scenario isn't so bad as almost all stacks are "lots" and its meleebut when its lots of ranged earlygame, ranged is just so strong in this gameinfernals are pure dogshit btw, I dunno how infernal plays I assume you're supposed to abuse magic, so far my favorites are stronghold and castle/humans, most straight-forward and tanky stacks
Campaign missions often require mission-specific approaches, but in a regular "fair" map you are generally expected to be able to clear, and snowball doing so: you build unit dwellings first, and get the econ from killing neutrals and grabbing the resources they are protecting while also strenghtening your army from external dwellings, rescued units from creature banks, or with diplomacy (which makes it OP). In essence, you get both the units AND econ this way, compared to capitol rush that only gives you econ (plus, grabbing the map-objects denies them to the opponent). This requires careful understanding of the game such that you can judge what fights you can take, and some tactical finesse, so as not to lose momentum (you should come out of the battle ahead or not much worse, losses compensated by the stronger hero), common tactics include e.g. splitting your tier 1 units into single stacks to eat enemy retaliation and protect your more valuable units, or using power stacks that can wipe out enemies (or at least not suffer losses in retaliation).Strong players might recruit half a dozen or more heroes, some of them with the minimal expansion army (e.g. Stronghold might have a power stack of Rocs, power stack of Behemoths, and then everything else) and others for tagging resources (so no movement on main heroes is wasted) and ferrying troops, but newbies should try to do this to the best of their ability too, like at least having a secondary hero following the main hero around to tag the resources, etc.
>>738596748Level 1&2 creatures are fodder you sacrifice to get as much exp and resources as possible in first few days
>>738596954at this point I always prioritize maxing city halls early for money-making, not sure if that's valid, a bit of a turtling strat so i might get rolled in harder scenariosI hate how some of the campaigns you can't pick difficulty without doing some esoteric shit with a map editor to unlock pickable difficulty, I'll prob be too pleb to beat the undead expansion campaign
>8 heroes>all that uncollected shitI don't care if most of them haven't moved and you can't see the ones up north
>>738599064its campaign so I had no choice with the 8 heroes, but usually I cap it out either way just to have em as resource slaves is it like this in homm 5 as well? 1-2 stacks with army the rest just mules
>>738597082A lot of people just don't play campaigns because they are "gimmicky" like that. Myself included, I have played HoMM3 for a thousand hours minimum and not finished a single one. A lot of scenarios have kind of "story content" anyhow (in Battle of Sexes male players will be paying child support, etc).
>>738599805thats pretty sick, with the amount of scenarios this game has the content is literally infinite, the gameplay loop is a bit repetitive which is why i prob won't play a billion hours, but the campaigns are really cool so far, plan to TRY and pass em all at least
>>738596315You should definitely be playing more aggressively. Hell, you should be getting some extra creatures just from dwelling construction, so if you're not ready to wipe neutral stacks within a day or two, the problem is between the chair and the keyboard.
>>738596315yeah you're doing everything wrong. watch someone who knows how to play
>>738596315I used to play like that.. and kept wondering why is the game so hard (after few game weeks)
i hate them so much
>>738597082Tempo is far more important, accept loses to upen up as much as possible of the map. Buildpath depends on your start. If there's lots of gold laying around you go for army first.
When should I take gold over experience or experience over gold?
>>738603817i'm OP and shit at the game but seems to me like you always take XP on your fighting heroes no matter, and if you don't wanna bother reaching certain treasure chests on your mule heroes its better to take gold, xp seems much much more worth though, gold is plentiful later
>>738596315Sort of.One thing to consider is that not all units are build equal. The Swordsman (Castle) is stronger than the Archer (Castle), but the Archer can shoot enemies from across the entire battlefield and wipe out more dangerous enemy units before they can even hit back.Knowing what you can fight and what you can't is pretty important, too. Peasants are basically fodder to ranged units, while Halflings will attack back at a range and Faeries will fly right up to your archers and kill them immediately. That helps you figure out what you can kill and what you need to leave alone for when your army is stronger. Also, you can left click (I believe) on enemy units go get a general idea of their strength. Few, Many, Numerous, and so on.
>>738596315No, every pro will tell you that the first week is the most important one
>>738603315fuck the cows
>>738604964WHAT IS THEIR COUNTERthey're just tanky as fuck while doing insane dmg, ig they're slow
>>738605882Same thing as everything else, expert slow and archer stack, maybe forcefield strat if odds are overwhelming.
>love homm games>be bad as fuck>just stack as many niggas as I can>AI also stacked lots of niggas>I lose
>>738596954Is that same tactic apply to Olden Era? I somehow got my main dude and 3 week mass army wiped by AI lvl 8 hero on the third week and he already got like 120 dogs, 150 ghosts and 20 vampires
>>738606237Best part is cleaning the map, then the phase where you wipe AI castles is irrelevant and doesnt matter if you lose or win. Its more frustrating if you play against humans as they min max or cheese with annoying tactics
>>738606572nta but im never gonna play mp precisely because of that, i don't wanna fight against minmax bullshit
>>738599805Opposite of me. I didnt finish a single custom scenario or non campaign map. I always like the gimmick and the story. Sandro will always be the greatest and his billion skeleton campaign but i also like the story in Heroes 4 campaigns even if mechanics sucked.
>>738606631>That moment when you see heroe running into your position with a single Efreetyeah i just woudn't be able to waste my time on this if it isn't fun
what do you guys think of homm6I really loved 3 but played 6 and it was specialwish it had the OST of the previous games
>>738606691I think the story's pretty cool too, its just generic fantasy stuff but there's griffin bikini queendamn this scenario has a huge map, biggest one I've played on 'yet, and its quite open hard to defend wo garrisons
>>738607583When are we getting barbarians and mage tower in Olden Era? Also why is there Gunnar in the campaign but no other Heroes 3 characters like Sandro or any Erathian?
guy got shat on in my humble opinionI genuinely have no idea where to get the op lvl 3 spells yet though>>738608407reason I got into homm was cause that game looked cool but its EA, so I'll just play the finished games until it comes out of EA
>>738608407That’s not the Gunnar from HoMM3, just one of his ancestors.Death.
>>738608407schism is the tower/mage faction
>>738608697it isn't, schism is just the snow faction. it has nothing in common with 3's tower gameplay-wise
>>738608757and the homm5 tower faction had stone chess gargoyles and turbans, its not a 1 for 1 but its what you're going to get
>>738608826tower != academy
>>738608845>tower != academyahh yes the gremlins, gargoyles, golems, mages, djinns and colossus(titan) but brown colored has in fact nothing to do with the gremlins, gargoyles, goles, mages, djinns and colossus(titan) but white coloredtake your meds lil bro
>>738608996what point are you even trying to make, first you claim schism is tower presumably just because it's a snow faction but then you make no distinction between tower and academy because they're so similartake your own advice with the medication
>>738607583If you care about the story, the order is HoMM 1 (optional, very little story), HoMM 2, MM6, Restoration of Erathia, MM7, Armageddon's Blade, MM8, Shadow of Death, Chronicles, HoMM 4, MM9.
>>738608659So this game happens before Erathia was even established? Why didn't technology moved an inch and we get same crossbows in Heroes 3?
>>738596315>>738596594Most people are incredibly bad at this game(and similar games) because getting good at it involves learning a lot of unintuitive strategy that most people are too stupid to figure out on their own.You can start winning battles against big neutral stacks with next to no losses from day 1 if you know what you're doing. For instance, simply filling out 5 of your creature slots with 1 imp each and then putting all the rest of your imps in one stack and all your gogs in one stack will immediately make your starting situation far better. Now you can bait enemies into killing just 1 imp at a time instead of a dozen, and then strike back with your ranged stack and eventually your one big imp stack once the enemies have been weakened.
>>738609257>story is split between two series with vastly different gameplayWhat a gay
>>738609257this >>738609516the MM games are way too dated for me unfortunately, I don't mind old games, but old PC rpgs is something else, i bet its filled with annoying dnd mechanicsHOMM aged beautifully in comparison, i think even HOMM 1/2 look really nice and the gameplay is consistent i believe
>>7385963153 is not technically a very good game, but you should be able to clear every dwelling on week 1 with your starting hero.>>738609415This is well put; the game teaches you to play it one way but it should be done another way. The AI is incredibly bad in this game.>>738607582HOMM5 is only worth playing if you actually want to have tactics.
>blue is taking red's whole kingdom while red is still hyper focused on fucking with me with his mega stackFUCK OFFFFFFFFFF
>>738596315It's obviously faction and map dependent, but getting tier 7 unlocked by end of week one so you can start accumulating monsters for later recruitment is very doable. Recruit secondary heroes (the first hero of the week comes with extra units) to pick up resources and flag shit is a good starting point. Mana is also a resource to plan around, i.e. should you end your turn near a well or even in town with mage's guild so you can blast the next day with full mana.
>>738609516It's mostly if you want to follow story of this entire world/planet.Key characters show up in both series but that's about it each campaign or rpg game has its own story with beginning and end, there is only like 1 or 2 events that affect both series and they can be summarized in a sentence or two
>>738596315homm3 is a terrible game for turtling
this map is fuckin hugeI just killed the enemies' main stacks after they rampaged in my land, but it'll prob take many ingame months before htis map is takeni think the size is L how long do you usually play maps this size homm3anons?
won my first L game with 6p yesterday and the AI on normal seemed to be very bad it was very boring. also too many towns are scattered around imo. will be upping the difficulty to hard now and maybe a smaller map
>>738608407>no other Heroes 3 characters like Sandro or any Erathian?there's octavia, halon, and the sorceress with the nose ring whose name I forgot in grove.
>>738611126Use your other heroes to chain your armies from one place to another. At this point you can run one hero with your T7s/thunderbirds/clops and another with your early units
>>738612835I'm already taxiing every weekrn i got a hold of thingsbut taking such a big map with only 2 real stacks is a slow process...
>>738613823your units are too spread out. everyone except for zubin and shiva should only have a single thunderbird
>>738613823what's really funny in this campaign is i didn't know that i'd be playing against my own heroes which i leveled up in the first scenario of the campaign, played myself lmao>>738614082those 2 are taxiing zubin and shiva are my only stacks with troops but playing against 2 enemies that only attack me and each other rarely, there's always some fucking shit sneaking up on my land, shit though, I keep forgetting this game has overworld spells lol, I haven't used a single town portal... i always forget its a thing
>>738614181really need to start using town portal, shits mandatory for these map sizes i thinkit comes from lvl 3 mage guilds right? i think
how am I supposed to get the grail when it mirrors my own army and adds more stacks to it?
>>738614181your hero chains must be fucked up then. the idea is that you get the new units on your main hero immediately on day 1 of every week.
>>738616569yeah I get it like a train I guess, haven't tried, usually I just have one dude per town waiting to get units and ferry it to the 2 heroes i'll try arranging em like a train next time, just a hassle to setup when they won't be doing anything for 2-3 days
>>738616569>>738617150also depending on the map you can only do this from like one or two towns at once, they're often spread out as fuck
>>738616454magic
>>738614181Town portal and dimension door if avaible are a must have on larger maps, you'd want expert air and/or earth on your main heroes as well
>>738613823Also notice how you're on swamp terrain, shit slows you down by a large factor. Put a single dragonfly on your alt heroes (no other units), hero movement depends on your slowest creature speed and their native terrain. So if you only have a single dragonfly on your hero on swamp terrail, you'll start next day with a lot more movement points.
>>738618505>>738618742wait can i use town portal to taxi units, like grab from my towns town portal to where my hero is and deposit? i should really start doing that
>>738618880You can town portal between towns of your choice as long as you have mana if you have expert earth. So if an enemy hero creeps up just TP back to the threatend town to deal with him and then TP back to the town closest to your 'frontline'.
>>738619291yeah so thats the true reason for all those wells around for resetting skill points, just have to remember that I have it and open up the mapgenerally whenever given the option u always wanna take + expert in magic when leveling up right? it all seems really powerful
>>738596315This game is heavily biased towards using magic. If you're playing random maps, you need to rely on using AoE type spells and retreat.
>>738611591How are they in this game if Elden Era happen years before Erathia was even established? Are they all their ancestors with same name and face?
>>738596315It depends. Its really up to the scenario, however, you generally can kill stacks way above your army if you play the fights correctly, waiting multiple weeks until you overwhelm the AI stacks is also not always a viable solution. Since this slows your growth, and stacks can also grow in certain scenarios.
>>738603817Depends on difficulty. On the hardest difficulties you won't be able to build fuck all or buy any units if you don't go gold. Otherwise, I would pick exp until the hero hits like lvl 6-8, after that it barely matters.
>>738596315>Is it normal to not be able to fight anything for the first like 3 weeks in HOMM3 while you build up or am I doing something wrong?Get GOLD instead of exp from the crates, use them to buy creatures, fight neutral stacks and you'll gain a lot more exp than you would from crates plus you gain territory and access to whatever buildings they were guarding, if any. It's also normal to take losses, your troops are meant to be expendable, especially low level ones. Only try to save the more expensive, higher level ones which you can only buy 1-2 of early on, and after that maybe the ranged shooters, and after that whatever unit is quickest (they get turns earlier in combat allowing you to cast spells before enemies, and they give you more movement points in land). Like try blocking enemies from attacking them, attack with high rank enemies only after your slow cheap melee units already soaked up a counter hit, etc. The slow cheap melee units are literal meat shields. And turn on statistics display on attack, that way you can tell how many you can kill on an attack and strategise around this to avoid counter attacks; or to make sure you do so much damage that a counter hit isn't strong enough to give you major damage.Once you get spells, slow + archers or blind + melee units is more useful than a paltry 40pts damage from a magic arrow. Fire Magic is generally crap unless you get Berserk which is crazy hilarious.
>>738596315Procgen plays a role in it. You can just get completely fucked surrounded by huge stacks of powerful monsters sometimes but its pretty rare, just range further out til you can take them. Or if you're blocked in GG just restart because you'll be so far behind it'll be instant loss as soon as you encounter another hero higher level than yours.
>>738609391No, it's running at the same time on the continent of Jadame (MM8). The campaign feels like they are doing a TEMU version of MM6 though with the night of falling stars.
>>738620915I'm playing the campaigns so I guess they're curated, but I didn't even know the game had pro genit doesn't for the campaign scenarios, right?
>>738621008It takes place well before the events of HoMM1.
