Why did Capcom never make another proper Breath of Fire game after 4?
>>
Western game "journalists", unironically. By the end of the 90s the international market dwarfed the japanese one, so the devs increasingly cared for what westerers thought about their games. During that time virtually every JRPG review ever complained about turn-based combat and at some point it just buckbroke the entire industry, and nobody dared to make classic JRPGs anymore. FF still hasn't recovered from that.
>>
>>738599748
Because this.
>>
>>738599954
That's why we're all turning to the French, anon. They're massive weebs to a man, and they've years of turn-based gaming to draw upon.
>>

>proper Breath of Fire game after 4
is dragon quarter that bad?
I never played it
>>
>>738599954
I never got it, how were people able to uphold the "people don't want turn based combat" narrative when Pokemon exists.
>>
>>738600164
>is dragon quarter that bad?
Depends on who you ask but it certainly isn't a comfy JRPG like the other games, it's a roguelite. Thinking about it, the game would have done a lot better if it had released today.
>>
>>738600164
It's different. Some people love it, some hate it.
>>
>>738600164
Some people REALLY can't deal with soft time limits.
>>
>>738599984
Kino
>>
>>738601513
I think it's less that people can't deal with it and it's more that it isn't what they want out of Breath of Fire. You will always have large pushback when a series takes a big departure from their usual formula. It'd probably be better received if it was marketed as a spin-off and not Breath of Fire 5
>>

The jrpg competition was too hot at the time and Capcom had no idea how to keep up.

Look, anyone that actually was alive at the time remembers how absolutely stacked the market was from the early 90s to late 00s. Meme on how retarded Final Fantasy has gotten over the years, or how overrated Chrono Trigger is, or how your personal treasured gem like Phantasy Star or Front Mission may have been, but that's the point: everyone was making bangers. Capcom came in with BoF 1 because they wanted a piece of that pie, and then made 2 because they saw they could tap the market, but tried to one-up the first game with a more-is-better design. 3 was released inbetween Final Fantasy 6 and 7, being one of the only jrpgs on the PS1 at the time with its only current gen competition being Wild Arms 1, but it was already being labeled as a mediocre, ho hum rpg that does jack and shit to make a lasting innovation compared to its contemporaries. Capcom tested if they could still coast with 4, with its two major selling points being doubling down on its pixel animation, and allowing the usage of the fishing rod controller for the fishing mini game. Yes, 4 is deeper than that, I'm saying what the marketing was. 5 was Capcom's hail mary, after being attacked for being the run-of-the-mill series since the beginning, they did everything to be noticed in 2002 to 2003, the same years as Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud 2, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Riviera, .Hack, Shin Megami Tensei 2, Suikoden 3, Tales of Destiny 2, Wild Arms 3, and Xenosaga 1. Hell, Capcom released Battle Network 3 the same fucking timeframe. So yes its a bastard child by being advertised as 'the hard rpg,' again, what it was advertised as, not what it was in actuality, and just couldn't figure out a way to be marketable, so they left the scene. Mega Man became their 'rpg franchise,' followed by Monster Hunter, with BoF 6 being a test for mobile shit and the only hope of the series being 4's GOG/Steam release
>>
>>738601935
Warranted, but Dead Rising came out a few years later and the complaints regarding the time limit were even louder.

Aside from being UGLY AS FUCK, the gameplay is just irredeemable shit, the storyline is garbage and worst of all THERE IS NO FISHING.
>>
>>738599954
It's funny how pretty much the whole industry and perception of those games have done a 180.
2d games, platformers and metroidvanias and turn based games are all back and in style.
>>
>>738599748
If you look it up, you will see that each Breath of Fire game just sort of never actually did too hot, and began doing worse with every entry despite more effort being put in.
>>
when are we getting a BoF 1-5 collection

I would still play it despite that, if not for the "if you fuck up, you need to replay the whole game" part.
>>
>>738602441
That's a nice looking shader, but what the fuck is your point?
>>
>>738599748
Because Dragon Quarter was a massive failure and they are extremely embarrassed over it, the they managed to overcome that and released a FUCKING MOBILE GAME which was also massive failure and now they are embarrassed of it for good.

Can't you just grab some NG+ save from GF and do a single playthrough?

This just made BoF4 look even prettier while DQ is still ugly, so if anything you just proved him even more correct.
>>

They have MHS as their main JRPG series now.
>>
>>738600164
It's a great game, but it is somewhat different from its predecessors.

These games were some of the dullest jrpgs I've ever played.

Except for Dragon Quarter. That was interesting

There are a bunch with maxed ratio. No idea if the characters are too strong, which is usually why I don't bother with NG+ in jarpigs. Maybe it can also be fixed with a bunch of gameshark codes.

>>738603853
Even if you somehow get through it without restarting they fuck you over by locking stuff behind the gay d-ratio BS.

It's the best one. But it's different, I guess.

>>

There was nowhere to go after BoFIII. 4 was a failed experiment.
>>
>>738604514
I've managed to basically finish it with no hard restarts on my first try. Git good, scrub.
I actually did hard restart in the first dungeon with Bosch, and restarted once from the telephone booth savefile. Got destroyed a couple of times and lost like six hours of progress, though.

Yeah, I assume all combat I'd experience through those saves would be pressing attack and watching enemies get removed.

>Even if you somehow get through it without restarting they fuck you over by locking stuff behind the gay d-ratio BS.
I thought maybe I could simply not use the transformation, but now you make it sound like you have to increase the ratio at least to a certain degree to unlock other things?
So, hitting 100% is game over, but you do need to hit, for example, 50%?
>>
>>738604825
The game is essentially a roguelike, there's a ton to do and a lot of extra content for subsequent runs. If it had come out 10 years later it'd be called a classic rather than a hidden gem.
>>
>>738604825
The D-ratio is not the D-counter, it's basically an end of game evaluation system that grows closer to 1/4 as you fulfill specific criteria like finishing a run in under 10 hours, or reaching a comically high level 50
>>
>>738604978
>>738605146
Okay, I think I'll give up on trying to "complete" the series then. I really can't stand anything rogue-. It was the same with Poporogue they released between Popolocrois Monogatari 1 and 2.
>>
>>738604825
>So, hitting 100% is game over, but you do need to hit, for example, 50%?
No, D-ratio is basically your rating for finishing the game or stature in in-game terms it's basically how much of someone is spliced with dragon genes, I guess. What are you talking about is D-counter and you need to keep it below 100 to not trigger a game over.
>>
>>738600164
I played it and somewhat enjoyed it. It's not bad but it is very divisive and for good reason. It's not the kind of game that should've been thrust on Breath of Fire fans and would've benefited from being a wholly new IP.
>>
>>738605293
fair enough, can't argue in matters of taste. I had a great time with the game, the punishing nature and hard fights were right up my alley.
>>
Capcom abandoned tons of IPs in the late 2000s in favor of milking Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter. Breath of Fire is not special in that regard.
They STILL do it.
>>
>>738600164
>entire franchise centered around dragons
>every game up until this point has had the player be rewarded with dragon forms throughout the game as epic summons that do big damage
>dragon quarter literally has no dragons
>"dragon mode" just increases your stats and infects your save with AIDS after a while
>entire game takes place in an ugly dungeon instead of the vibrant and varied environments of its predecessors
it is functionally not a breath of fire game. I honestly don't believe it started as one, but was some shit that capcom had brewing and decided to slap the breath of fire name to at the last minute for a hopeful boost in sales on name brand alone.
>>
>>738604384

It's not bad, but the only things that are in common between DQ and BoF1-4 are:
>game's title
>main characters' names
>ability to (somewhat) transform into dragon
Everything else is completely different. Imagine if Square would release Parasite Eve as Final Fantasy 8 — that would've been Dragon Quarter situation.

Looks like another shitlayer of the reset mechanic is that you're overpowered, so not only do you play through the same shit multiple times for small extra unlockables, it's also completely challenge-free to make it even MORE boring. Beyond fucking stupid.
>>
So the BoF4 game that's being released on steam...is it the uncensored version, or just the ps1 American version?
>>
>>738606992
It's an old PC port that was made for a Europen market.

>>738606992
All of the censorship in the game is a complete nothingburger. Removing scan so they don't have to translate enemy stats was worse.
>>
>>738599748
Capcom isn't capable of making it. "Capcom" isn't even the same fucking company that made BoF4
>>
>>738607293
>censorship doesn't matter
Then why was it done, anon? hmm
>>
>>738607293
If it's a nothing burger, then why did the censor occur at all?
>>
>>738610618
So Timmy doesn't get the idea he's straight and ends up making white babies. The point is, it's so miniscule that it doesn't take away from the game as a whole.
