You can stop at Yakuza 2, 3 or 7 and be met with a pretty solid conclusion with a good understnading of what the Tojo Clan is and why it's a big deal in Stranger than Heaven. Since Stranger than Heaven is a distant prequel with its own unique combat system, you don't need to play the other games to understand it. However, I highly recommend the Judgement duology. They're not connected to anything but are good games.

Kiryu is also specifically shown in K3 to have done Majima Construction during Bad Boy Dragon.K3 can't be canon at all because 4 requires Hamazaki to be in jail for the story to happen at all, Mack does not appear in it but appears in future games, Minamida does not appear in it but not only appears in future games but is also main story mandatory in 4, and Amon now makes no sense at all because Jo now states they're going after him because of the same reasons as 1 but that retroactively makes K1, K2, and even 7 make no sense.Then 7 onward all reference the Kiwami games as having existed with some of them even outright acting like the original and Kiwami games exist at the same time.
