>>738621079the main difference between governments and bandits is that governments try to maximize long-term theft whereas bandits focus on short-term theft, so governments are more likely to make some reinvestments into their victims so that in the future they'll be able to steal more
>>738621079Perhaps the same could be said of all religions
The difference happens once you change from banditry, warlords, or dictators to a democratically legitimized republic or quasi-republic ("constitutional monarchy"). That marks the difference between a third party forcefully extracting money for their own benefit, and a people deciding to fund their nation by imposing usage fees on land and services.

>>738624242Kind of, but the idea of a royal bloodline is that you can assure some competence by training a ruler from childhood. It works pretty logically most of the time, which is why royal bloodlines were mostly stable for most of history in several countries of the world.
>>7386237641. They are less brittle than you think due to primogeniture, or even just selecting an order of heirs while you are alive. It's a problem that is within our ability to solve.2. Democracies of transition of power problems as well, they are just ignored since democracy advocates are western biased. When you include global south democracies you will find they are not as stable as you would imagine.3. We all assume the object that must change is the human executive at the top of the hierarchy, however the entity that governs is different in different systems.Yes a monarchy has a transition of power when the regent is replaced by another human regent, but that is because the monarch is the central authority of governing: what they say mostly goes.In democracies, this is not the case, the highest position of power (the president or prime minister) doesn't have absolute power and so replacing them is not a complete transition of power. The democratic equivalent of a complete transition of power - similar to that of a monarchy - would be replacing the overt (political party) and covert (allied businesses, bureaucrats, and activists) components of the ruling force. As it is more diffiuse, you are unlikely to remove it all at once, leading to a mature, anti-fragile regime that can outlast any other human. In a monarchy, you wait a few decades for the monarch to die to get change. In a democracy the party and allied apparatuses can rule for a century, if not more.

That it wouldn't be sustainable and capitalists would still be trying to sell baubles as people starved to death in the streets. He thought this would happen within his own lifetime. In reality we see opposite happened. The capitalists at the very least have a system where there's sustainable input and output. The capitalist company can't continue to exist if it spends more than it makes. Profit motive keeps the system's lights on. The Marxists, in the name of equality and goodwill to all men, hand out entitlements. The system consumes itself by producing less then it gives away (via redistribution of the productive sectors to the unproductive) and in the end the Marxist countries were so hollowed out by investing perpetually in the unprofitable that they were forced to begin capitalizing their economies.

The hard truth is that there is no one solution. The fight against subversion and oppression is unending. No matter what kind of government or power structure (or lack thereof) you try to form, eventually the sociopaths will worm their way into it and start fucking over everybody. After numerous generations of this, the rot becomes so bad that the system collapses in on itself - or is destroyed by those whom it oppresses - and the cycle begins anew. The debate over this system or that system is largely irrelevant. At best, you should seek out a system which does not give too much power to anybody in particular, since that makes it harder to destroy when the time comes. But even then, a people in a different place will be at a different stage in their own cycle and may choose to use their strong state to conquer yours, making things even worse for your people.Humans spent nearly 200,000 years living a certain way, and then for the last 10,000 or so, we started living differently. It will take time to adapt. It's just hard to say right now whether that adaptation will lead to freedom or slavery for the majority of people. If slavery still results in people having lots of kids - even if those children are born as slaves - then things will go on that way, as natural selection doesn't care if you're happy, only that you are alive.

>>738626656Oh, that's what Bartre essentially tells Cath in their support. Damn, this is Fire Emblem.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib_RH4nD2SY
For most of human history the distinction was simply that righteous authority came from Heaven, and bandits did not have that mandate. But then the Enlightenment came along with the notion of legitimacy stemming from the consent of the governed, but this ceased to be popular after the old order was swept away and the new order realized how problematic that idea was if you want to govern a large territory for any length of time. So now we're stuck in not believing in the concept of political legitimacy at all but sometimes acting like we do when it can be used to bludgeon our political enemies.
>>738626656Might determines the structure of cultures, ethical systems, laws, and beliefs but does not make them internally coherent or preferable for the people living under them. Also, if might makes right, then the progressive coalition is correct because they will absolutely destroy you if you became a real threat.
>>738626535I love my boomer parents. I'm in no hurry for them to die even though I will inherit multiple properties and a lot of liquid assets.
>>738624257Almost like the tree of liberty needs to be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants, or something.
>>738626656>"libertarians believe in might makes right">constantly harp on about the NAP>specifically talk about the state's monopoly on violence as their primary complaintcan't even strawman accurately
>>738626656I dont think anyone seriously subscribes to might makes right. Sure it may be a convenient explanation of why one group dominates another or why laws work or whatever, but you have to discard literally all moral reasoning and principles to believe in might makes right. None of our founding fathers talked that way or believed it. None of our legal institutions like the constitution would work with it.
>>738626835Tell me more about what you think of the age of consent.
>>738626705They were happier with uggo than they were hopelessly trying to get Chad to commit and getting depressed over getting nothing. Turns out that uggo gets liked by his wife after they live together and get through life together.
>>738626697one of the dumbest plot points in fire emblem and that's saying something.
>>738626747are you retarded? there have been plenty of successful societies where the leaders had legitimacy other than that of a "madate from heaven" and political legitimacy is a very real concept, its just diluted by the fact that we take democratic legitimacy for granted and everybody is too comfortable in their lives to question it
>>738626904mind you, karl marx was a pedophile

Retards have no idea that in history, merchants often paid bandits specifically because they made an effort to keep their trade routes clear of bandit competitors and animals that could cause a threat. It was an investment. They attacked you if you didn't pay them, but were functionally an escort group if you did.

>>738627224>The worldly utopianism of the social left has its roots in Marx to the near exclusion of every other philosopher.>The social left simply cherry picks the social utopia from the broader socio-economic utopia of Marx. They spice it a little with current ideas of what constitutes social "good".A mutation of a worldview isn't the same thing as the original. I still disagree, as it is a post-hoc justification. If a government has not fallen yet then it can be argued from this framework that it has the consent of the governed, even if it is genuinely sadistic.>capitalism isn't capitalism because it's not anarcho-capitalism>Smith isn't an anarchist. He's talking about a land tax from day one to prevent monopoly abuse, among other things. At that point, we are just talking about markets, which can exist within any political structure. Unless we are willing to cede that Capitalism existing in all civilizaitons with markets, currencies, and prices, then we have to be more specific wtih the term.

>>738628116>A mutation of a worldview isn't the same thing as the originalNo but your analogy is wrong. A Protestant Church is still a Christian Church, even though it's not a Catholic Church. The social left is in near totality a reduction of Marx. So yes they aren't communist but that's a red herring. >post-hocIt's not post-hoc. The argument is "the state is". It's infinitive. If you accept revolution is possible, then the only logical explanation for continuity of state is consent. The philosophical dissents surrounding Locke usually deal with manufactured consent, propaganda, is it really consent when the State manipulates the people, etc. But in a strictly formal sense, his maxim holds. >that's just marketsCommies take arbitrarily broad or reductive definitions of capitalism when it suits them. For my purposes the "father of capitalism" speaking about legal checks on corporate power in his treatise is a reasonable enough source for me to say capitalists aren't anarchists.

>>738621079Not a fan of how this was phrased. Because that's not the point being made. Especially when she goes on the talk about her village getting burned down. It doesn't connect. But you didn't get that choice. It was decided for you by rich bastards decades before you were born. Every human born before the 1920s, who didn't have to tether themselves to a piece of shit car, literally had better lives in this one respect, at least.

what is the real reason that healthcare isnt free in the USA?
>>738632917I don't need to believe it, I can see it in effect. I can easily visit family that live in remote regions by simply driving to them, and I can easily see several trucks doing deliveries to several regions while driving.
>>738632995These are all a symptom of the same cause, industrialization. I'm not sure what your point is. Everything that happened starting in roughly the 1800s has been a fucking mistake and we're now reaching the end-days and making our planet uninhabitable as the price of our greed.

>>738633126Same reason why healthcare companies can charge you admission and are legally allowed to deny you life saving treatment.Capitalism is a failed experiment.
>>738633230cant they seize your assets?
>>738633126The real reason is that the US healthcare system has been patched over with enough quick fixes and stopgap measures that you could reasonably argue that becoming more public payer or more free market would be an improvement, and a movement to either draws backlash from the other movement since it would hurt those who rely on the stopgap measures.

>>738633126We have a very old population. The average age is like 46 or something. I choose to believe one look at the demographics of the country would scare anyone straight. Of course, if you told boomers that you were taking away their free healthcare like medicaid and medicareC they would all be goose stepping in the streets for single payer healthcare. Also we have this insane pharmaceutical industry that gives children and teenagers drugs with insane withdrawls that keeps them customers for life like SSRI's. You cant even quit those cold turkey, its worse than alcohol dependency.
>>738633234No? There's some of my family who live in their remote home town because that's where they established themselves there while the other part of my family moved out. If it wasn't for cars, there'd be no easy way to reach this part of my family.

Would socialized medicine actually be better? For example, I know of a case where someone was in a hospital for a year and the total bill would be about 7 million USD. Now if you take into account that most people make maybe about 50k a year and work for maybe 40 years that means the 1 year at the hospital for this person was 3.5x the lifetime earnings of the average person.
