>>
>>738621079
the main difference between governments and bandits is that governments try to maximize long-term theft whereas bandits focus on short-term theft, so governments are more likely to make some reinvestments into their victims so that in the future they'll be able to steal more
>>
>>738621079
Perhaps the same could be said of all religions
>>
The difference happens once you change from banditry, warlords, or dictators to a democratically legitimized republic or quasi-republic ("constitutional monarchy"). That marks the difference between a third party forcefully extracting money for their own benefit, and a people deciding to fund their nation by imposing usage fees on land and services.

That's a weird way to write "intentionally funnels into the pockets of billionaires"

No, the government takes around $50,000 a year from me and I have not used a single service of theirs worth more than around $1000 or $2000. I know a woman who hasn't worked in 10 years (single mother, not disabled) and the government gives her free money enough to sustain a cocaine addiction.

But you should constantly try everything in your power to remove as much as possible from the government.

Lolbertarian philosophy is pretty nice when it works, but it takes way too little to consolidate power. At this point, I unironically believe that Monarchy is the best option, since you at least know where the power is and the monarch can act in his country's interest.

True, but one of the advantages of monarcy over typical autoritarian governments is that it eases the transition through heredity, with the son of the monarch spending his early life on how to rule. It has its own sets of problems and I could be sold on libertarian ideology, but if you have to give a ruling class power, it'd better be as clear as possible who has the power and who will get power next.

Hereditary might as well be a random selection of competence so by itself it doesn't solve anything, it might not even pose any problems immediately but eventually it will create them and that's where constitutionality is important.

>>
>>738624242
Kind of, but the idea of a royal bloodline is that you can assure some competence by training a ruler from childhood. It works pretty logically most of the time, which is why royal bloodlines were mostly stable for most of history in several countries of the world.
>>
>>738623764
1. They are less brittle than you think due to primogeniture, or even just selecting an order of heirs while you are alive. It's a problem that is within our ability to solve.

2. Democracies of transition of power problems as well, they are just ignored since democracy advocates are western biased. When you include global south democracies you will find they are not as stable as you would imagine.

3. We all assume the object that must change is the human executive at the top of the hierarchy, however the entity that governs is different in different systems.
Yes a monarchy has a transition of power when the regent is replaced by another human regent, but that is because the monarch is the central authority of governing: what they say mostly goes.
In democracies, this is not the case, the highest position of power (the president or prime minister) doesn't have absolute power and so replacing them is not a complete transition of power.
The democratic equivalent of a complete transition of power - similar to that of a monarchy - would be replacing the overt (political party) and covert (allied businesses, bureaucrats, and activists) components of the ruling force. As it is more diffiuse, you are unlikely to remove it all at once, leading to a mature, anti-fragile regime that can outlast any other human.

In a monarchy, you wait a few decades for the monarch to die to get change. In a democracy the party and allied apparatuses can rule for a century, if not more.

Sure, and you even have extreme forms of it like the Ottomans where the sultan would not necessarily select the eldest son. Bandits, yeah. That's definitely something negative.
But what if we talked about primitive societies and their tributes of resources to the chief of the tribe? You could definitely call the state a type of bandit, but the truth is that these things have been happening and even still do right now in primitive societies. I'm not even arguing for taxes or anything similar, but it seems like something that has been happening for a long time, even prior to a state being formed.

Exactly. Marx contended the capitalists would keep chasing profit until their whole system came apart in apocalyptic self destruction. That it wouldn't be sustainable and capitalists would still be trying to sell baubles as people starved to death in the streets. He thought this would happen within his own lifetime.
In reality we see opposite happened. The capitalists at the very least have a system where there's sustainable input and output. The capitalist company can't continue to exist if it spends more than it makes. Profit motive keeps the system's lights on. The Marxists, in the name of equality and goodwill to all men, hand out entitlements. The system consumes itself by producing less then it gives away (via redistribution of the productive sectors to the unproductive) and in the end the Marxist countries were so hollowed out by investing perpetually in the unprofitable that they were forced to begin capitalizing their economies.

The hard truth is that there is no one solution. The fight against subversion and oppression is unending. No matter what kind of government or power structure (or lack thereof) you try to form, eventually the sociopaths will worm their way into it and start fucking over everybody. After numerous generations of this, the rot becomes so bad that the system collapses in on itself - or is destroyed by those whom it oppresses - and the cycle begins anew.
The debate over this system or that system is largely irrelevant. At best, you should seek out a system which does not give too much power to anybody in particular, since that makes it harder to destroy when the time comes. But even then, a people in a different place will be at a different stage in their own cycle and may choose to use their strong state to conquer yours, making things even worse for your people.
Humans spent nearly 200,000 years living a certain way, and then for the last 10,000 or so, we started living differently. It will take time to adapt. It's just hard to say right now whether that adaptation will lead to freedom or slavery for the majority of people. If slavery still results in people having lots of kids - even if those children are born as slaves - then things will go on that way, as natural selection doesn't care if you're happy, only that you are alive.
>>
>>738625643
>Hobbes was a misanthrope.
Maybe, but who cares.
>Communism doesn't work.
Correct, but no one, including the social left wants Communism.
>People are rational agents capable of making the correct decisions.
False. People are influenced by changes in their environment and emotional state. If you can manipulate one of these two dimensions, you can increase the probability of people doing what you want. There's a grey area in choice where people can end up in an undesirable situation, where they would not have done so under different circumstances (ie: East Asian Employee Suicides).
>There is no such thing as a primitive all-out anarchist war without the leviathan.
Partially correct. It's an abstraction that can never be fully attained, like a perfect circle. That does not mean that the state of war cannot be approached to some level of accuracy.
>Locke was right.
No. He started with his own normative claims and then built the cognitive structure from there.
>Capitalism works.
Not really, because it's advancement requires breakthrough R&D that comes from governments trying to survive (ARPANET). Without government intervention in the form of anti-trust law, businesses will aim for gaining control over political bodies to give themselves an extractive advantage.

Capitalism only works with a referee.

Nigga, only time something approaching textbook libtard socialism produced something functional was Anarcho-Syndacalism which is the only of these societies to acknowledge that they have to function in an ecosystem of heterogeneous economic policies and made themselves competitive to match them.

well, the principle of democracy is that it will. and it did, in the late 1700s-late 1800s, although obviously it took violence and bloodshed. and i agree that over the past ~200 years that ideal has been eroded by the elites as they gradually accumulate more and more power. so if your argument is that we need more "forceful" action to turn governments around to actually catering to the will of the common person, I'm not disagreeing

For most of human history the distinction was simply that righteous authority came from Heaven, and bandits did not have that mandate. But then the Enlightenment came along with the notion of legitimacy stemming from the consent of the governed, but this ceased to be popular after the old order was swept away and the new order realized how problematic that idea was if you want to govern a large territory for any length of time. So now we're stuck in not believing in the concept of political legitimacy at all but sometimes acting like we do when it can be used to bludgeon our political enemies.

1. The universe has no god, physical rule that distributes property on ethical claims.

2. Due to our mortality and ability to suffer, violence is a consistent variable in all interactions.

3. Those who succeed at violence (but seizure and property defence) will end up owning property.

4. To reduce the probability of being on the wrong side of violence, you exchange some of the resources you can gather to someone who will deter that violence.

Retards have no idea that in history, merchants often paid bandits specifically because they made an effort to keep their trade routes clear of bandit competitors and animals that could cause a threat. >The worldly utopianism of the social left has its roots in Marx to the near exclusion of every other philosopher.
>The social left simply cherry picks the social utopia from the broader socio-economic utopia of Marx. They spice it a little with current ideas of what constitutes social "good".
A mutation of a worldview isn't the same thing as the original. Just like Islam takes a lot from Christianity, Intersectional Social Justice takes from Marx without being Communism.
>He's right about his maxim that all government exists at the consent of the governed, and that old Greek thoughts about 'lmao just walk away' were outmoded by the time he was writing since the State's effective control was so deep into the frontiers by then that the frontier in the classical Greek sense no longer existed.
I still disagree, as it is a post-hoc justification. If a government has not fallen yet then it can be argued from this framework that it has the consent of the governed, even if it is genuinely sadistic.
>capitalism isn't capitalism because it's not anarcho-capitalism
>Smith isn't an anarchist. He's talking about a land tax from day one to prevent monopoly abuse, among other things.
At that point, we are just talking about markets, which can exist within any political structure. Unless we are willing to cede that Capitalism existing in all civilizaitons with markets, currencies, and prices, then we have to be more specific wtih the term.

>A mutation of a worldview isn't the same thing as the original
No but your analogy is wrong. A Protestant Church is still a Christian Church, even though it's not a Catholic Church.
The social left is in near totality a reduction of Marx. So yes they aren't communist but that's a red herring.
>post-hoc
It's not post-hoc. The argument is "the state is". It's infinitive.
If you accept revolution is possible, then the only logical explanation for continuity of state is consent. The philosophical dissents surrounding Locke usually deal with manufactured consent, propaganda, is it really consent when the State manipulates the people, etc.
But in a strictly formal sense, his maxim holds.
>that's just markets
Commies take arbitrarily broad or reductive definitions of capitalism when it suits them.
For my purposes the "father of capitalism" speaking about legal checks on corporate power in his treatise is a reasonable enough source for me to say capitalists aren't anarchists.

A private road company could maintain roads and either charge a toll for driving on them or charge commercial land owners to connect to their road. In any case you end up saving money.

Rich people never pay any tax yet get all the exclusive government benifits

That's because you also need the elites to not instantly transfer all tax money into bulldozer purchases that then get shipped to Israel for free so that the IDF can level more Arab villages in Lebanon.
Taxation by itself is not enough, you need people that actually care about the country to run it.

Remind me why this is supposed to be a good thing again. For millennia the world population was well below 1B, then it got crazy in the 20th century. What is the point in all these humans existing? It's not like if we didn't have 10 billion people, 10 billion people would be suffering. We just wouldn't have so many fucking people.

Personal transportation used to be a complete pain in the ass, with your best option being an expensive ass horse or wagon, with which you'd travel so long to get anywhere that dysentry was a threat. Most people shouldn't own a car, if you think about it. But you didn't get that choice. It was decided for you by rich bastards decades before you were born. The real reason is that the US healthcare system has been patched over with enough quick fixes and stopgap measures that you could reasonably argue that becoming more public payer or more free market would be an improvement, and a movement to either draws backlash from the other movement since it would hurt those who rely on the stopgap measures.

Would socialized medicine actually be better? For example, I know of a case where someone was in a hospital for a year and the total bill would be about 7 million USD. Now if you take into account that most people make maybe about 50k a year and work for maybe 40 years that means the 1 year at the hospital for this person was 3.5x the lifetime earnings of the average person.

Messenger pidgeons have ruined humanity beyond comprehension. We were NEVER meant to communicate with people without seeing their face and body language and PHYSICAL PRESENCE. The second the first bank note was transferred by bird, we fell into a deep dark downward spiral.

I highly doubt a medieval commoner would be aware of the tenets of socialist thinking. Therefore this leads me to believe that Anna is like the Aladdin Genie where she exists in a past society but is actually aware of knowledge and references to developments further down the timeline.

Why yes, I love my government funded roads in which popped my tire in a pot hole. Government funded police are great as well when reporting someone shattering a window by throwing stones and call back 30 minutes later because they can't seem to input an address into a GPS and follow it, and end up never arriving or contacting back. Great usage of tax money.

Or he will come back knocking for his income, that is if he doesn't kill you and take everything instead. That's how mafia works.
>>
>>738628328
If you were a merchant you were going to get raped regardless. That's why they hired guards even during times of peace. Every single person wants a cut of the pie if they can get it.
Paying bandits usually protected you from not only other bandits, it reduced the amount you needed to spend on guards (if anything at all) once you became a regular. The mafia exorts because they have a monopoly and they could survive even without extortion money, though they obviously wanted it. Bandits usually didn't have any of those luxuries and ended up turning it into a black market business
